    Default ants

Grrrr...this is one of the things I hate about FL..no matter how many times I have an exterminator out...the bugs are never gone.
And I cant really afford to have them come out right now...but I am getting black ants bad. Not so much in the house, though I've seen a few here and there....but outside. I have a screened in patio/pool,which is where my birds big outside cage is. I've noticed ants around their cages and a few inside. I dont want to have to put them in their indoor cages since they REALLY like being outside when the weathers nice...but obviously I cant spray bug spray near or in the cages.

So..does anybody have any ideas on what will get rid of them without harming the birds??

Hot boiling water. Has worked in NJ and FL. I had to do it a few times in NJ.

Also, get a scoop of ants from another location and put them in your ant pile. Ant war.

I use that liquid Terro ant killer, I have to hide it under stuff so the dog can't get to it. I'm not sure if they make an outdoor one but if it was in a spot where it wouldn't get rained on it might work.

This month's issue of Vegetarian Times has a bit on bugs. Here's what it says for ants:

Myles H. Bader, DrPh, author of 1,001 All-Natural Secrets to a Pest-Free Property, suggests placing fresh, whole bay leaves in drawers, cupboards, flour containers - wherever you see ants. He also recommends cinnamon, ground cayenne pepper, baby powder, garlic, or crushed mint; place any of these in ants' paths, and they won't cross them.

I've read they won't cross chalk. So if you draw a chalk path they won't come across it. Also I have heard cornmeal kills them, they take it home and can't digest it plus it won't hurt animals or small children.

I did boric acid when I had that problem a couple years ago it didn't work great but it worked some. I wish I had known about the cornmeal instead.

OMG I have the same problem, the house I moved into has a horrible ant infestation and I have a big problem with leaving food out, so they are loving me....they are the extra super little tiny ones. I woke up a couple nights dreaming about them biting me all over. Totally freaked me out, I hate them little buggers.

Terro Ant Killer is by far the best---I just need to remember to pick some up when I'm at the store.

First step is to identify the ant.

I'll guess your pest(s) are either Fire ants, Carpenter ants, or my favorite, the tiny Pharoah ant.

Fire Ants build mounds in soil, Carpenter ants nest in dead wood and the tiny Pharoah is opportunistic enough to nest beween the pages in a book, or behind a wall, or in an electrical wall outlet. Freaking ants.

Pharoah ants will often split into as many as three satellite nests in support of the main nest which may be a hundred yards away or in some inaccessible place. These little guys are trail-makers and small and go out hunting for food and water.

I suggest a quickie wiki of those three ants.

They def arent fire ants. The exterminator called them sugar ants...though they gravitate towards water not sugar.People get them mainly in the bathroom or around the kitchen sink. Or outside near the pool.

Well at least they aren't fire ants. I had this problem in my bathroom and then one day they just disappeared.I have no idea what changed, so unfortunately I don't really have any advice.

I believe Sugar ants to be another name for Pharoahs. I wouldn't be surprised if a "conga line" appeared in another nearby place. Did the exterminator say he might need to return?

*bump* because this is interesting and I just had to deal with a whole nest that was crossing my threshold because they were coming out of a FUCKING HOLE in my outside wall. I attacked the bastards with liquid bathroom cleaner, flooding them with it, left that for a little while-- did mop up with a rag, then vacuumed little buggers that were on the carpet, and then I spread cayenne all over the place-- a little on the carpet brushed in hoping it's not going to stain and then just dumped a HUGE pile right next to the hole in the wall and down the step where I suspect there's another hole.

so many ants. I keep twitching thinking they're on me.

What's worked best for me is to make sure they have zero access to food, which is probably the thing that attracted them in the first place. This means zero tolerance for crumbs anywhere.

Also, I've heard that citrus oils keep them away -- like orange or lemon. You could try putting that in the areas you see them.

^ I've got a dog who eats raw-- which means that unless i want to clean up his corner of the kitchen that I never go into everyday, it's not going to happen (oftentimes there's little egg shells or some beet juice, or a small piece of carrot laying over there.)

Also-- I admit it-- I'm messy. I live alone, which means that dishes get rinse and stuck in the sink but sometimes there's a film on the dishes or often some lemon from my drinks that hangs in the sink for a couple of days (I get a couple gnats when that happens.)

Honestly, I just really need to get a super powerful vacuum. I borrow the apartment offices vaccuum which doesn't suck enough

Mix equal parts of baking soda and sugar and leave out for the ants. The sugar will attract them, and the baking soda will cause them to have gas. Since ants can't burp, they explode.

This works, I have tried it!

CK, if they're those little sugar ants/white-footed ants, which I'm guessing they since they're kinda unique to Florida, you can't kill the colony or anything...gotta just keep food up and sealed, and place poison around out of site.
