Default i hit a deer tonight on my way home

I felt terrible. It darted out in front of me on a two-lane highway when I was doing like 70 and I hit it. My door is fucked up...unfortunately my license is technically suspended right now so I can't have the cops come over to my place and write up a police report. Which means I don't know how to get my insurance to cover this.

The license is suspended because I didnt respond to a charge about having a sticker in my windshield by the deadline and had to pay a $35 fine. It might be lifted by now but I havent officially been notified. I'm afraid the damage is going to be in the thousands. And I dont know if I can drive to work tommorrow night either...so I might lose pay too.

The deer survived the inital impact and ran off the road.

so when you know it's been lifted, then file a report and act like it happened that night.

and vent here. One of my all time fave threads:

^^ Thats a good idea, but I think I have to take my car into the shop asap because i dont know how bad it was fucked up and id hate to keep driving it to work (work is over an hour away) if that might make it worse.

^^ It is Saturday and I have work Sat night. I dont think the courts are open. I cant rent a car with a suspended license...but maybe i can find a friend to drive me or something. but that would be a good ass friend since i work an hour away.

Well, look into your license situation, then file a report. DO NOT WASH YOUR CAR. Whoever is coming to do an estimate will see the hair/blood/etc and that's plenty of evidence.

no one in your town works at the same club?

are you going to be able to get your car fixed in one day though?
and if you had your insurance cover it, what are the consequences of driving with a suspended license? (as in: could you pay a cheaper fine than covering your car out of pocket?)

No one in my town works at the same club, as far as I know, no.

Unlikely that it could be fixed in one day, true, but maybe they could tell me if it's ok to keep driving it. I dunno.

I dont know the consequences of driving on a suspended license, but I think it's a huge, huge, mega problem. I think if you get pulled over in that situation, the cops impound your car and shit. I will have to find some way to figure out what the best way to proceed is.

I am exhausted right now and have no energy to be driving to the repair shop after a full night of work. This SUX.

Thanks for the advice on not washing the car.

The shop is only open 8 am to 1 pm today and its almost 8 am but I am so tired i am nearly falling asleep at the keyboard. I figure my license may be OK again as soon as Monday. I guess I may have to not work tonite and then just file a report on Monday and tell them I didn't realize the damage initially and didnt drive the car in the meantime. Which is kind of true. I didnt notice the damage initially. I thought it was fine.

Will it drive up my premium if I report it to the insurance company?

Firstly, call the insurance company and tell them what happened and how they want to proceed. I've had cases where I did not need a police report. Do not say anything about a possible suspended DL.

I don't know what it is in your area, but sometimes you only have up to 48 hours to make a police report.

Even if your DL is suspended, it is a misdemeanor, cop's judgment if he arrests you. I have been pulled over for a suspended DL before, and I was upfront with the cop.....no arrest, just a ticket to appear in court.

Let me say this, in general terms, not directed at you....if something happens, stop, call the police, etc.. when they get there, be upfront. A lady here is in jail for several years because she hit a kid (under 10) on a bike. She kept going. If she would have just stopped, nothing would have happened to her, the investigation determined the kid went into the street and she was not at fault.

Oh gosh. This was always my worst fear living up in the mountains where deer were prevalent.

I'm not sure if your insurance will go up for sure, but it probably will. If you make a claim so that they fix your car, it usually does go up, unless your insurance company has a first accident forgiveness (like Allstate, assuming this is your first claim).

Don't be scared to call your insurance company and ask them your questions. They work for you.

I'm sorry that happened to you I'm glad you're okay though! Please don't mess around with the suspended license thing though.. I know shit happens but I got thrown in jail for 6 hours for not paying a $35 a month fee for driving without insurance once. Now, over 2 years later I've been delayed on getting my temporary nursing license for a month because of all the background check crap they do and the arrest being on my record even though it was dismissed. It's such a pain in the ass and I'd hate for you to have to deal with the stress, and financial stress of being arrested. I know you don't need a lecture, but it happened to me and I don't want it to happen to you

Do you have a friend that would be willing to say they were driving so you can report it now?

Your insurance may go up..depends on your policy

I agree with the above poster. Call the insurance company and do not mention the suspended license. Do not give any information they do not ask for, but tell the truth when they do ask questions. And take care of the license issue -- it is obviously stressing you out and the worst you will get is a fine if you are upfront about it. I doubt it will be that much. Your premiums should not go up -- you were not at fault.

I'm going to call the insurance company tomorrow (Monday). The accident happened Saturday morning at 5:30 am. So I think I should be OK -- as inw ithin the window. When it first happened, I thought there wasn't any damage. Only in daylight did I realize the door got smashed from the deer literally running into my car!

I am going to call the court first to make sure my license isn't suspended though!

Good luck with everything. This is one my huge fears as well. I know hunting's not popular on SW, but there needs to be more tags issued so less deer are clogging up the roads..........

I am a vegetarian and I am in favor of that, because they do need natural predators. but only if people actually eat them and dont hunt them for sport.

In NYS 'driving on a suspended license' is a misdemeanor and you need a lawyer. A garage or body shop will evaluate your car but doesnt have to inform your insurance co. Best to keep them un-informed about that, just about the car itself. If you can squeek by without expensive repairs for now, count yourself lucky.

The deer probably is dead by now. I know they are handsome critters but they are not road-wise and overpopulated and can be road hazards, and some just have to die so that the others can live better.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

NOTE: anything I post here, outside of a direct quote, is my opinion only, which I am entitled to. Take it for what you estimate it is worth.

Oh, that sucks sooo bad!! I fucking hate deer, hence the thread I started awhile back with the same name. They're still out there trying to get me, too!!

Best of luck with the insurance company. ITA you should just call and not mention the suspended license. If I remember correctly, I didn't need a police report to file a claim with my insurance company when I totaled my car by hitting a deer.

Well I called the court and the clerk said they havent opened their mail from the end of last week yet, and that I should call back tomorrow. I'm just gonna wait to make sure it's clear to be safe. I just dont need the headache of more problems. My insurance doesnt have a 48 hour window or anything like that stated on the web site. It just says report accidents ASAP. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm doing it as soon as legally possible. Even if there is a 48 hour window, I'm sure the deer isn't going to call the insurance company and give them a conflicting date.

It's not for insurance, it's for reporting an accident to the police. As has been said, you may not need to file a report for insurance to cover it (but you need to call them and find outhow to proceed), but if you delay and time expires, you're SOL.
