    Default Changing the workout routine

OK so for the past 6 months or so I have been going to the gym 4-5 days a week. I do either the treadmill or stationary bike for about 30-40 min and weight tran for about 30 min. Although I got great results initially, and have maintained, I still want to lose a few more lbs and tone up more but I think I have to do something entirely different, as I have hit a plateau. Any suggestions? Would something like Pilates or Bikram yoga work?

Do you know you HR when your doing your cardio? You could be crossing into the cardiovascular HR zone because you are used to the exercise. You want to be in the weight loss zone. Do you just run on the treadmill right now? You could increase your speed OR increase the incline (which will also tone your thighs). If my memory is correct you can calculate your weight loss zone HR by subtracting your age from 220 then multiply that # by .6 and that is the low end. The high end is multiplying by .9.

As for your weights...Are you increasing the weight or remaining at the same? If you want to build and tone up more then increase your weights or try another exercise that works those muscle groups. Remembe4r that while you lift your body is burning glucose as fuel and when you are recovering your body is working aerobically meaning it is burning fat. The more muscle mass you have the more efficiently your body will burn fat. Also look at the way you are lifting. Make sure you are inhaling on the release and exhaling on the contraction. Remember to lift slowly and drink plenty of water.

Also, for weight loss...if you do your cardio in the morning before you eat you will burn more fat. This is because your body doesnt have any other fuel (in this case breakfast or food) to use ...as long as you are in the corretc HR zone.

    Hope that helped

I would try Pilates, Bikram or you could incorporate resistance bands into your workout to break the plateau. Good luck!

This is what I'm currently doing now, and I feel GREAT! http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/wotw10.htm

OK I am going to try Bikram yoga this week. I want to go 2 days this week, and on my other workout days I'll go to my gym. I didn't know that you shouldn't eat breakfast before working out! (I work out in the am.) So that is something I can change. That and adding more weight to the machines. Thanks girlies.

Generally speaking, with a workout you don't have to change ENTIRELY, but you do have to continue challenging yourself to see results. If lifting a particular weight or going at a particular speed on the elliptical starts getting pretty easy, kick it up a notch. Add weight, resistance or speed.

But, every 4-6 weeks, you should switch it up anyway, at least a little. I have a tendency to do my weights in the same order, so when it comes time to change, I flip it and do them in reverse.
