Default Career peak at 15, suicide at 20...wtf?

Model dies in fall from NYC building

"A cover model for European Vogue has fallen to her death from her Manhattan apartment building in an apparent suicide.

The British edition of Vogue hailed Korshunova as 'a face to be excited about' in 2003."

"ANTM" and the industry it represents are undeniably entertaining, but the flip side appears to be teen phenomenons who burn out before their 21st birthdays...

Do you think her death is more because of the type of industry she was in or the pressure a lot of young people feel- the need to excel?

No doubt that both played a part, and I'm sure mental illness had a hand, too. Very sad.

My guess would be a combination of the industry's demands for her to project a fluid, "media ready" identity (before she had a chance to form her own sense of self) and the naturally competitive instincts that contributed to her early success.

In my junior year of college, a professor told us about a former student with a 4.0 GPA who committed suicide when they got an "A-minus"...on a fuckin' midterm exam! It seems that some people regard anything less than sheer perfection as a personal failure.

Good point... with so many instances of child stars hitting rock bottom or worse, this makes perfect sense.

That student's suicide is sad... I feel like being perfect is a huge pressure for a lot of people. Being adequete even 'just' good at something seems to equal failure anymore.

I honestly think some people just aren't born with the needed abilities to cope with what life throws at them. Much like depression and bipolar can be inhereited so to speak. Sad all the same.

True. Life isn't kind to anyone. Some just have more of a thrifty constitution than others. It's still sad though.

This reminds me of another Russian girl her age in Florida that exsanguated herself (bled to death, obit on mydeathspace site.) Slavic melancholy.

(No, seriously, mental illness. A tragedy.)

^ Thanks for the link, Daniela...

The article stated that her boyfriend dropped her off at 5:00am after watching the movie "Ghost" with her. Do you think that Miss Korshunova spent the hours before her death:

    a) trippin'
    b) rolling
    c) depressed/crashing
    d) drinking
    e) one or more of the above
    f) none of the above

Yea I was just reading that! They say the fall is under investigation. She is so beautiful. I think that she was a happy girl. I wonder who they think push her out the window.

^ I didn't realize that Miss K. hailed from from the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan. Out of respect for the dead, I'll refrain from tasteless "Borat" references...

So sad for one so young to give up...goes to show that even exceptional looks don't make life perfect.

I got my exam results a month ago- 6 A's and 4 B's. good enough to get me into fourth year and to get me into a masters course.

Then i found my friend had achieved 7 A's and 3 B's and got an award for it! well i was damn near suicidal (the stress of the exams really took it out of me, coupled wth existing depression and the fact that my dad didn't see interested like he never seems to be).

Thankfully a month on i can see i was being irrational but theres still a part of me says "what does that prove? that you can pass an exam well? what about out in the real world?"

Sorry i went off on a tangent but i just wante to show what pressure can do to young people.

Sometimes I wish I were more of a Type A personality. I'm a slacker, and I usually need to dope myself up with coffee and wine to really get things done. My house is a mess, and I'm decidedly more paunchy than most dancers.

Things like this, tragic as they are, make me glad to be my paunchy hippie slacker self.

I want to remind everyone here... Celebrate yourself and live a better life... not necessarily a richer, thinner life.

Someone on another forum pointed out Ruslana probably wasn't taken seriously when she needed someone to talk to.....It's easy for many of us to say that someone like her "should not" have any complaints.

This reminded me of the last conversation I had with an old friend of mine who was very gorgeous but troubled....It consisted of three hours of her crying on the phone....She looked like she had it all but she had NOTHING. Sometimes great beauty is a trap.

    Ahh, MadMaxine!

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my boyfriend a week or so ago. I was telling him how annoying it is when you are lost in thought/extremely sad about something going on, a death in the family, or what have you and someone, usually a guy, will stop you in your tracks and ask, "why you aren't smiling?" or "How can a pretty girl like you ever be sad?'

Or, if it's a friend who sees you bummed out about a real life problem they'll use "But you have everything going for you, you're a, b, c, AND D" with pretty being listed amongst them and all you can think is , "Huh? How does that make my pain any less real?

Pretty doesn't bring so and so back, doesn't make someone feel any more loved, doesn't erase debt , etc!" And yet this brand of irrational logic and reassurance happens more often than it should.

I am not claiming to be anywhere near as beautiful as this model but even your every day attractive woman can encounter these sorts of issues where you could have the worst home life in the world, be the black sheep of the family, have lost your apartment/car/house/cat/dog and someone will smirk at your problems because you 'ought' to be able to figure it out since you're so darn pretty.

    As an aside:
One of the articles mentioned that she sent money home quite regularly. I wonder if that factors in at all, where as much as we on the outside see high fashion modeling as glamorous, she may have been dealing with the pressure of not knowing when her star was going to burn out, and how long she could keep up sending that money to her family.

She might've worried about never finding true love and acceptance because she'd always be known as 'that Euro girl with the looong hair'. Who knows? But, it is sad, either way.
