    Default Pilates for "stripperitus" rehabilitation?

    hey ladies,

i am currently getting my pilates certification and had this idea of putting together a pilates mat program specifically for current and ex-strippers suffering from general stripper injuries/issues... "stripperitus" is what i call it. just wondering if this is something that anyone out there would be interested in taking? I'm based in Portland, OR but i just wanted to feel this out with you all.

the class would take into consideration common stripper pains, injuries and posture issues such as; lordosis (over arching of the lower back), hyper extension of the knees, lower back pain, overstretched hamstrings, tight hip flexors, etc etc and work to correct them and relieve pain. it would be a one hour drop in class offered twice weekly and all the exercises could be taken home and practiced there.

it just seems that so many of us get physically destroyed by dancing, whether its by the pole, the heels, or just by so much physical exertion... and i know most of you dont stretch enough or at all before going on stage, i know i dont.

so what do you think... yes, no? interested? would you actually attend?
really any feedback would be great

    thanks!

Aren't there legal ramifications of claiming to be able to treat or relieve injuries? What if some girl hurt herself at your class doing something that she could make look like you said would help, and BAM you get sued.

I'd say leave it to the physical therapists and stick with exercise. It wouldn't be worth the risk to me.

    I'm just being honest here...

As someone with a mildly fucked up body from dancing, I wouldn't go to a class like that. Maybe if a doctor recommended you, but why would I trust someone with just a pilates certificate with my health?

I see your point, but I don't think she's claiming to fix medical problems.

I studied pilates for two years in college underneath a certified instructor (it was part of my degree) and it really really really helped my lordosis.

Pilates is a great thing, and it really can help moderate problems caused by mis allignment of the spine and by overusing muscles and underusing other ones...if that makes sense. I think she's just trying to help some of our stripper soreness which isn't like a MAJOR medical issue, just some discomfort.

I think it's a great idea...I personally wouldn't pay to take the class as I don't need to, but if I wasn't experienced in pilates I would take it.

I danced full time for 8 years and really the only part of me that has suffered is my feet. Morton's Neuroma is what it's called. It is caused by wearing high heels and is the foot equivelent to carpal tunnel.

Otherwise stripping has made the rest of my body stronger and more flexible than before dancing.

I would take the class if I didn't live halfway across the country. I have been seeing a chiropractor for lordosis and I thought it was caused by my recent pregnancy. I didn't know it was common thing for us ladies. I'm unfamiliar with pilates (I know - bad girl), after this thread though I am going to check into it. I can't believe my chiropractor didn't tell me to do something like this, however my insurance is paying his PT handsomely for the bullshit exercises that I swear do me no good, and I'm sure that has something to so with his omission. Anyway is there an exercise in pilates I could tell the instructor I should concentrate on more so than others or does that defeat the 'harmonious balance' that defines pilates

Thanks and good luck with this! I think that it's a good idea; there are probably other oblivious girls like myself that just think that they injured their backs/other various body parts in some sort of mishap or whatever and don't realize it was just part of the gig. *Anyway, just target advertise well at clubs with flyers and whatnot and you could probably have some success at it. Doesn't hurt to give it a shot!

I would totally take this class. It's just regular pilates, folks--no crazy physical therapy or anything. My understanding is that she's just selected moves that target problems strippers commonly have.

you got it dottie. im not claiming to cure any serious medical issues here, its a pilates class plain and simple... it just focuses on exercises that have been found to help with common complaints that strippers have. its a lot of spinal articulation exercises, lumbopelvic stablization, ab strengthening, etc. the name is more of a joke than anything as "stripperitus" is not a real medical condition

so with that clarified, any thoughts?

I don't think there would be much of a market in any given place How many girls in or out of the business would want to go to a stripper themed exercise class at a gym or elsewhere. Nice idea, but I would just concentrate my effort on something more marketable.

I think, especially in PDX, you'll have a good chance marketing this. Maybe build a modest website and take out small ads on the back of the Mercury and WW. Mention a dancer discount, maybe? If you can find a studio to offer it cheaply in, it could really take off. I would do this in an instant! I love pilates and since I've committed to it, I've had lots of relief in the area where stripping has made me hurt. Good luck!

i have taken pilates. It fixed my scoliosis along with only ONE trip to a chiropractor. pilates really does do amazing things. I has severe his problems among other things and the were all fixed by pilates. its really worth a try. but you have to be careful who you choose. its all about proper use of technique. if you don't do pilates with a proper technique you could actually hurt yourself.

I would totally check out a stripper yoga or pilates class. I think it's a great idea. Maybe couple it with some injury avoidance classes -- like, how to protect yourself while doing floor or polework.

Please give me a holler if you decide to start doing this!

I went through a Pilates Instructor certification course here in town too (just never took the exam! ) and I also thought it would be a perfect way to target stripper related issues. Probably the best way, in my opinion. I suffer from all of the issues you mention.

I entertained the idea that you have, of doing a class, but honestly when I look around at the girls in my club, I don't feel like dealing with 90% of them. And, by "dealing with" I mean, they just don't seem like the type to be interested in a specialized Pilates class. Maybe my club is especially ghetto though.
