people who live in south florida (or vactioned there recently)

    help me out.

i'm a floridian, so i feel a little ridiculous asking about this... but to be fair, i live on the gulf coast (central - tampa) and this is about SOUTH florida (mostly west) sooooo sue me.

i want to plan a trip down there in the future as a sort of reward to myself for something (personal - i dun gotta tell you bitches everything). this won't be for at least awhile till i can justify spending the money, have the time, boyfriend can take vaction time, etc. i've never been a real "OMG THE BEACH!!!!" person because, well, it's old news to me. for some reason though (maybe age) it suddenly dawned on me as a good idea. not to mention that it's more doable price-wise, since we can drive down. most of the other places i'd like to vacation are at least a good flight away or are out of the country all together.

i'm not sure exactly where we want to go (besides south/florida/and probably west coast, but i have an idea of what we want. here are the general "what we're looking for"s:

-decent reef close. lots of options for snorkeling and the small resort-tour kind of scuba-diving is a big plus.

-doesn't have to be miami-big .. but some sort of a night scene, or at least bars open late, would be good. we're both night people, and although i want to relax, being stuck in a place where -everything- shuts down early would kind of wear thin.

-i would prefer some kind of REPUTABLE vacation rental to a large hotel. i kind of like the idea of a house near the beach.. or at least a hotel/condo situation that's a bit more quiet. i don't mean it has to be "in the middle of no where".. i'd just like a good view and a quiet decent sized room. you know, not a real obvious chain set-up, but still nice. did that make sense?

-other fun animal related touristy stuff would be cool too... or anything geeky. we are nerds.

    soooooooooooooo

what i would love and be very grateful for, is any sort of advise/reviews (good or bad) information that any of you can give me. do you know of any good places to stay? what city do you think would be best? any tours you've taken that you recommend? etc. etc. .........

i've searched online a little bit, but there's seriously a billion (i counted) different vacation rental companies and stuff like that. i really don't want to just go out on a limb and pick something. things can look/sound A LOT better on the internet than they are in reality.

I'd go to the Keys! Awesome scuba diving! Or Fort Lauderdale. Great bridge and reef/drift dives.

Yeah the keys have great diving. No animal stuff though. In lauderdale area you have the miami zoo, parrot island, monkey jungle, butterfly gardens and in est palm the drive through safari

Its kind of cute..small though. You walk through a cage tunnel type thing with the monkeys running all over wild around you. When I was there...close enough to see was a family with a tiny little baby monkey..so cute!!!

Awwww, I didn't know there was a monkey jungle down here! I so need to get to that. I freaking love Parrot Island though. I like the Everglades farm too to take that air boat ride and see the alligators.

The Keys, especially for snorkeling/diving. Stay at one of the lesser-known islands to avoid the expensive hotels, just be damned careful if you party in Key West itself and drive back--the cops will nail you.

I just finished Stephen King's Duma Key, and now I want to go just to see the sunsets.
