Seriously, if I let myself fall asleep and wake up naturally, I sleep 10 hours. I feel like I'm sleeping my life away!
What are some reasons I might sleep this much? How can I change to getting a normal amount like 7-8 hours?

I've always been thatway. I can sleep between 12-18 hours at a time if I don't set an alarm.
So I started setting an alarm for 9 hours after I go to bed. and I try my best to wake up to my alarm every day.
but some people just need more sleep than others...my boyfriend feels rested after 5 hours. I don't feel rested with out 9 or 10. 8 never does it for me...
Damn, PB. 18 hours!! You could try melatonin, for some odd reason I swear I wake up exactly 8 hours after I take it. It takes a few days getting used to, though.

^ I thought humans were just wired to be diurnal. I'm definitely a night person, though. It's so much easier for me to stay up working late in the night (with anything, even homework) than it is for me to wake up early.
I work until 4 AM, so I keep the curtains shut and wear a sleeping mask.

I find that if I am on a consistent schedule I sleep less. If I go to sleep at different times I need more sleep the following day. I know this probably isn't possible for you but if I go to sleep early I need less sleep than if I go to bed, say after midnight.
i sleep 8-11 hours also. i cant function less then 6.
Between 9-10 hours is good for me a night. I work all the damn day 8am-6pm...when i get home i am dead tired..i need my 9-10 hours a night!
Act like it's christmas..and put me on your wishlist!
it probobly has to do with how labor and mentally intensive our jobs are.
Did u sleep a lot/like to sleep as a child?

I usually sleep from 4am till 2pm. So 10 hours.
If I slept from 10pm till 8am (10 hours) I'd feel like crap. I hate being awake during the middle of the day unless it's a special occasion so when I have to be for prolonged periods of time it sucks. My body just want to sleep through the middle of the day.
I read somewhere that people who are raw foodists can sleep 4 hours or less and be completely rested because their bodies don't have to work to break down the food they eat and that their cells repair themselves much quicker, and since one of the purposes of sleep is cellular repair and regeneration, that kind of makes sense.
I DO find that when i eat primarily things like salads and fruit and nuts, I have WAY more energy than when i eat carbs and cooked foods. There may be a correlation.
i second the melatonin, I've had to take it because i've had wacky sleep schedules due to hormones/depression and it is starting to help get me on a schedule-- the only warning is that it causes CRAZY dreams!! Like.. I can fall asleep with the intention of dreaming about something, and then i'll dream it.
The average amount of sleep needed by an adult is 7-8 hours.
However there are natural variations amoung people. Some are fine with 5 some like yourself need 10.
The amount of sleep you need is that optimum amount which allows you to function throughout the day without feeling drowsy when you sit quietly and try to pay attention to something.
I wouldn't sweat it too much.![]()

I sleep for 12 hours or more, but I also have some depression/anxiety..Sleeping is self-medicating.

I'm the same way. I feel best when I get around 10 hours of sleep. If I only sleep 7-8 hours, sometimes I'm so exhausted by afternoon/early evening that I have to take a nap. I think some people just need more sleep than others.
^ that sucks. I want more time to get stuff done!
When I was younger, I could go on 6 hours, no problem. What changed?
I think I'm just bored and have no priorities. I'm only working 3-5 days a week and school is all the way in August. I. AM. SO. BORED.

i slept 3 hours per day and was totally rested on a high protein diet consisting entirely of game meat (deer and elk) and legume protein (good old peas!), with a few local vegetables for filler. didn't work with meat only, or legumes only-- i had to have both.
but it was just ridiculous having that much free time, so i switched diets to get more sleep. lately my schedule has filled out, so i may go back to that high-octane diet.
but all bodies are different. i'd suggest that viola strings hit up a local sleep lab to figure out *how* she's sleeping and then try sleep-pattern changes from there.
^ sleep lab? For some reason that reminds me of the Puma Mongolian Shoe BBQ, like a totally random place that you're surprised exists.

This is spot on. I spoke to my psychiatrist the other day about my over sleeping and he said it's def to do with anxiety and depression. Even if u are not clinically depressed, he said sleeping is a way of managing anxiety by not living life - coz life can produce anxiety.
I am now on my second week of sleeping only 8 hours. Once u get into the routine u stop needing so much sleep. I never thought I could do it and the first few days I really had to force myself not to fall asleep. The less u sleep the better and more awake u will feel too. I found before that I would sleep 10-12 hours and still feel tired when I woke up - from over sleeping.
There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.
Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

you go in and sleep there and they monitor your sleep. some people wake up almost constantly and don't know it, and that's why they 'need' 9 hours, or 11, etc. others just have weird things going on with falling into the proper kinds of sleep (not enough of one kind or another). they have some local to you. they are increasingly common as scientists and doctors learn more about how sleep works.
yah, today I woke up at 5pm an went to bed around 4am--so not sure how many hours i got, but usually I sleep a WHOLE LOT--I swear I sleep more than any1 I know-an ppl always tell me this. Also, I am up all night. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. But I am deff. naturally a night person. I just don't like the day time much--I've tried to change my scheule before-- to sleep during the night an up during the day--I only last about 2 or 3 days then I go back to my regular nocturnal schedule.

If you sleep 9-10 hours you will actually age slower than people who sleep 8. Slows oxidative stress. Medically proven.
So if you don't have a lifestyle need to change it, and it doesn't mess up your mental balance, (both valid reasons to try sleeping less -- I've been through the wringer with sleep, a lot) cheer up. It's quite good for you. :-)
