WTF IS UP WITH THIS WEATHER?!?!?!?!

thunderstorms across the nation, flooding in the midwest, here in CA it is hot in the day & freezing at night...

the house i grew up in burned down a little over a week ago. :/ parents have insurance & all, unlike a lot of my neighbors, but it's still terribly depressing. & this weather is nuts.

lol. this is totally my kinda thread.

I think things are only going to progress and get worse, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I think it's like the earth's growing pains, and it's going to evolve into something more conscious and healthy.

did you hear about the 17 mile long underground particle accelerator they are turning on in august in france? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

I think that might upset the earth's electromagnetic fields. It's pretty much a less spiritual version of what happened (IMO) with the bermuda triangle.

I don't think anything major or suddenis going to happen in 2012 necessarily, but I do think that there will be some *changes* that may seem subtle but make a huge impact.

Warming and climate change are a natural process on the Earth.
Global warming and cooling seem to be part of a 1,500-year cycle of temperature swings.

Earth's warming look much more like the moderate, erratic warming to be expected when the planet naturally shifts from a Little Ice Age (1300–1850 AD) to a centuries-long warm phase like the Medieval Warming
(950–1300 AD) or the Roman Warming (200 BC– 600 AD) and less like the apocalyptic human driven disaster so many people try and make it out to be.

The earth had strong global warming between 1918 and 1940. Then there was a long cooling period from 1940 to 1965.

It's also interesting that the current warming started 50 years before cars and industries began spewing consequential amounts of CO2.

Anyhow the study of 2 mile long ice core samples clearly shows a definite pattern of climate changes so I wouldn't panic yet.

As for the Hadron Collider... just remember, there were people that thought setting off a nuclear bomb would create an unstoppable chain reaction that would destroy the Earth.

80 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions in the world come from the nations of India and China. They do not seem particularly interested in going green. So I do not foresee things getting better, sad to day. So long, polar bears.

I hope it keeps getting warmer. Things were bad during the last little ice age, and the Earth has been rather cold. It's supposed to be warming up to get back to normal. Warmer water means stronger storms, but I'll take storms and floods over ice sheets double the height of the empire state building rolling through my yard.

^^^ That's the interesting thing though. Mass warming is what triggers ice ages. )

Higher Earth temps melt ice. Melting Arctic sea ice will dump enough freshwater into the North Atlantic to interfere with sea currents.

Because saltwater is denser and heavier than freshwater, the increase in fresh water would make the surface layers more buoyant. The problem is that surface water needs to sink to drive a primary ocean circulation pattern known as the "Great Ocean Conveyor." Sunken water flows south along the ocean floor toward the equator, while warm surface waters from tropical latitudes flow north to replace the water that sank, keeping the Conveyor circulating. An increase in freshwater could prevent this sinking of North Atlantic surface waters, slowing or stopping this circulation.

    Tada! Iceage.

As for the Polar Bears, well, species have been going extinct before men even exsisted. It's all part of the natural order of things.

Eventually we'll become extinct too making way for new species.
Kind of cool if you think about it.

Keira, the magnetic field is already changing on its own. It does that periodically, as evidenced by different directions in very deep rock strata, and apparently it's doing it again. There's an excellent chance that it's shifting in such a way that it will no longer protect us from solar radiation. If that happens, we'll be nuked, literally - it can actually shred your DNA.

^if you go to washington park to the tunnel where the max is-- they marked on the core sample exactly where the poles shifted-- it's really cool. there's a band of darker stuff where it happened.

    Eep. Source on this?
    Nasa seems rather more optimistic.

Edit: nm, I found various links with both sets of opinions.

More edit: I think it's the Master's fault.

I read about it in one of my geology books years ago. Damn scientists can never get their stories straight, always contradicting each other! Grrr, argh!
