well, i will say that whatever you decide, dont be surprised if you change your mind. i went through 3 1/2 years as an early childhood education major. my last semester of school, i changed my major. luckily, it was close (family studies with a track in services to children) so i only added one more semester. but you never know what changes you'll make once you get started. you might think you like something until you get far into it (like i was with student teaching. love working with kids, NEVER want to be a teacher.)

but there are general classes you have to take for any major- science, english, math, etc type classes, so you can always start out with those and go from there.

I've changed my major 3 times. You've got to think about what you're interested in, and what you're actualy good at. If you don't know where to begin, you can alwaysw start with the core classes, which ar ebasically the sam efor every major, though (at least in Texas) some may require a different math.

You may also want to take a career explorations course which will help you to see more clearly which skills you are strongest in and possible career choices that require those skill.

    Good Luck.

You can start by taking some basic classes that might be required in every degree (english, math etc) and then take a few classes in things that you like. a language? psychology?

It'll be great once you get into it!

Going to college before I knew what I wanted to do was a big waste of time and money for me. I spent two years right after high school changing my major, dropping classes, and hating school.

After bailing on school and just working (and playing )for a few years, I was SO excited to go back. I still don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I understand the value of going to school now, and I actually enjoy it.

I agree with all the other posts, don't stress about your major, just start off with basic classes that will transfer to any major (or another school). The most frusterating thing for me has been all the credits and money I wasted on shit that didn't count for anything when I switched schools.

I also say try a community college, the classes will be super super cheap and CC's often have better resources for students who need guidence in their college choices.

    Good luck!

Yes! Before I take ANY class I make sure the units are transferable to the state college I want to go to. Im in comm college now. Just started by taking 2 summer courses... I really like it. Ill be going f/t come fall.

one problem with community colleges is that too often the credits dont transfer. or it can be a huge pain in the ass. like my school, even though the same exact classes for early childhood ed were offered at comm college, they would NOT be accepted. they HAD to be taken there.

or you get count for credits, but not the class itself.

They didnt have a thing that stated "UC transferable" - Like on each class it states if the class is transferable to Sac State or not. BUT DH wants me to try for UCD so now I have to actually find out if theyre fully transferable. What a mess...

yeah it can be a really frustrating and sucky situation. i never dealt with it, but my cousin did. also, it blows bc one person will say yes, another will say no, you can end up going in circles and its just like make up your freaking mind already!

When you pick classes at a CC, some schools use a general equivlency guide for transfering. This is where the problems come in.....the classes are pretty much the same, but unless they specifically have an argreement with the school you want to attend, you WILL get the runaround when you try to transfer.
Find a transfer guide that lists the CC class, and your exact course number at the university. Example... CC BUS101 = UC BS100.
Also, most major universitys have tranfer programs, where they work jointly with CC's so that students can do their first year or two there and then transfer problem-free to the University.

I know they have this with Sac State... so when it says 'transferable to CSU' I know it'll work BUT DH says UCs are better than State colleges and UCD is more prestegious than Sac State (well duh, its UCDavis...) so now I need to speak with someone at my school AND UCD to see whats up... I dont want to waste a bunch of time taking non transferable classes. That would suck monkey balls... I already wasted time and money at beauty school.

I found out what I wanted to major in by taking a year off, living on my own, and traveling.

My parent's pressured and forced me into college directly after high school when I was 17, and although I got a 4.0 GPA, I wasn't interested in what I was learning and I had no clear idea of what I wanted to major in. I majored in English because I am good at writing and it was the only thing I could think of that I knew I could succeed in. I transferred to a school out of state my sophomore year thinking that because it was in a different city and a different school that the classes would be different and what I was studying would be more interesting, but it wasn't. It was the same curriculum in a different place and the university didn't have any different majors or any wildly different classes. I was bored to hell and ended up failing all but 3 credits. After the first quarter at that school I decided to take time off and travel and just live my life, and then I knew I'd know, and now I do.

It sounds like you've already taken time off and lived a little bit though. In that case I'd suggest enrolling at a community college or something in-state and CHEAP and just getting your core curriculum requirements done with, it usually takes 1 1/2-2 years to finish them all. You can take lots of online classes as a lot of the classes are tedious and boring, and I'm convinced it's just a tactic by the colleges to squeeze another 2 years tuition out of the students. Seriously, I didn't learn anything new for the majority of the "core curriculum" classes I took at the state university i went to.

You still have another 2 years until you HAVE to declare your major anyways. I know all the freshmen always are asking everyone " so what's your major" but seriously... it's a stupid question. For me, it changed every week, and for most people it fluctuates a lot too, and it's not even necessary to know when you first get into college.

The only reason it might be helpful to know your major is because some of your core curriculum classes might also be requirements for the lower-level classes in your major, and if you can sign up for the right classes for your major, you can knock out two birds with one stone.

When I first started I was sure I wanted to be a Veterinarian. And then decided i didn't like the science and changed my mind like 2-3 more times. Now i am working on the pre-requisites for Nursing. (go figure- a science!). I am currently going to a CC and i second working in a CC bridge to Uni program. Much cheaper and many times the prerequisite classes are a bit easier than if you take them at the university. They also have more time to work one on one with you.

I decided on nursing for various reasons. Many women in my family are nurses. It's also a good career that is always in demand, so I can work anywhere in the world really and be able to make good money.

I'm not the type of person that is passionate about any type of career, so I went into business/economics cause all I was interested in was making $$$. Then I took my first business class and realized that I would probably make less in such a competitive field (unless I was on Wall St.) and I went downstairs and looked up the Occupational Outlook Handbook. That was when I changed my major to Bio, more specifically to later go to Dental School.

I go to a CC also, and although it may not sound as prestigious as a Uni, it really gives you the freedom to take your time and explore different opportunities. I really recommend you look up that handbook and read the descriptions. It helps a ton.

I almost have my associates degree in General Studies, which doesn't do much. My concetration is Criminal Justice but even though I found it really interesting, I decided not to go into it. The good thing about General Studies for me was that it forced me to take a whole bunch of different kinds of classes and they all transferred to University of Maryland and I had all my basics done but I ended up going to Aesthics school instead. At least in General Studies, you get a wide variety of classes and a bunch of extra classes that you can take on whatever you want. I didn't like online classes. I'm not a school kind of person and doing them through the Internet didn't give me enough motivation to actually complete the class.
