Unfortunately, a lot of times you have to have and spend money to save money. The brita filter will cost money up front, but in the long run, you save a ton. Buying more groceries to include sandwich making stuff will cost more up front, but will again save more in the long run. Saving money is a combination of cutting back and making switches to cheaper things. You do what you can here and there you know?

Another thing that I did is, I stopped paying with credit and my debit card. It was hard because I get cash back rewards. The reason why is, I am less likely to spend cash. I see the cash, I have to take it out of my wallet and as I look at it I think, "maybe I don't need this afterall." I buy alot less impulsivley this way. Also, at the end of the day I have change. I take that change and put it in a huge coffee can. When the can is full, I roll it and then put it in a shoe box. I have a few shoe boxes of rolled coins saved for a rainy day. There is probably only a few hundred dollars in there, but hey, in an emergency, every little bit helps.

Even though I'm spending four grand on my new bike, it's saving me eight grand in a year... which means it's paying for itself in SIX MONTHS. Startup cost be DAMNED - sometimes you just gotta do it!

About once a month my Mom and i go to Cost-co and or Sam's and buy stuff in bulk to split. I can get really good prices on meats and freeze them in individual packages so I only take out what I need.

I also know a guy from the club that works for a food distributor and every so often he brings in a bunch of food for the girls at work. Last time I walked with a turkey breast, 2 stuffed crust pizzas, burgers, pre-cooked chicken strips, a tub of bar-b-que and bacon!

It isnt cheap but it is really fantastic. I make a few cups of fresh juice every morning.
The problem with cheap juicers imo is that they are hard to clean and it makes you not want to usethem b/c it is a huge hassle to clean. With this one you just put a grocery bag in where the pulp comes and and you toss it when you are done. No washing needed. All the other parts are dishwasher safe. Its really the best
    oh man. that's 300 bucks.

they're out of them on amazon.com but i checked other sites. it'd take a year for it to pay for itself. heh

I bulk buy and on things that i always need i stock up when they're on special offer or 2 for 1 deals. I like the idea of bringing my own food to work as i have begun to get take out more and more recently due to boredom and lack of customers

The idea is that while some of the ideas aren't "instant gratification" because you have to spend a chunk of money on something, they will more than pay for themselves in the future. Sometimes this way saves more money and you get good quality stuff.

anyone add meat during the holidays? Big bulk steaks for less than 5 bucks a steak. You have to cut it yourself (hubby is a chef) but what a deal when I don't even eat a whole one for a meal!
warning: they are about 50-80 a package, but sooo worth it.

be careful to only "bulk" up on stuff you WILL use ie. toilet paper, tampons..
Not stuff you "like." Changing your mind means loss of money.

    exactly.

also, no one said they haven't cut things out. i have, as i mentioned in the first part of the thread. i don't eat out as much anymore, i only go out once a week, etc.

but sometimes you do have to spend money to save money in the long run. like the juicer for instance, i mentioned it because i noticed i was spending a decent amount buying juice at a juice shop. sure, i could cut out fresh juice completely and save money that way .... but it's good for me. ir's way better than processed juices (added salts and sugars) and i -have- noticed a difference in my mood and overall feeling good/not tired when i'm drinking juice.

I use a brita filter--they last forever and work very well. I'm extremely sensitive about how water tastes, and those filters make me happy.

Yeah, I have a Pur filter and they're insanely expensive. I would have totally gone with a Brita but I'm not paying for it. LOL

A HUGE money saving idea -- keep track of your spending, every penny. Just make it a habit. Every time you go to the grocery store, buy a coffee, buy shoes -- as SOON as you take out your cash/card, make sure to record what you're buying and for how much. You don't need to balance your checkbook or anything if you don't want to. But just the act of writing down "$3.40 for Starbucks chai" four days in a row will help you save money in the long run. "$120 for Banana Republic Sandals" just looks weird in your own handwriting.

This really does work, it was one of the first steps I took in really saving $$.

OK here's my quick list ...

    - I roto-tilled up a huge chunk of my back yard, and have planted a gargantuan garden. As a result I shouldn't have to purchase tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, corn, peas, onions, cabbage, and a bunch of other stuff AT ALL. However, as a trade-off I do have to buy a new energy star freezer before harvest time to hold what I harvest.

    - I also won't have to buy any processed tomato products (like spag sauce, salsa, marinara), any pickles, any sauerkraut etc. as I will make these up and 'can' them ... along with 'canning' beets, beans, peas etc. Trade-off is that I have to buy a bunch of extra canning jars and I'll have a whopping gas bill in October by running my stove to do the 'canning'.

    - I am now making my own soap products (both bar and liquid), my own cleaning products (glass cleaner, carpet shampoo) etc. out of basic ingredients for a tiny fraction of the supermarket cost. There really isn't any trade-off in this area other than having to handle some very strong chemicals (like lye)

    - I am now buying green coffee beans in bulk (25 lbs), roasting it myself on my stove, and grinding it myself. Even for 100% Columbian Supremo, the total cost comes out well below $5 a pound

I do all my banking online (ING Direct for 6 years). They offer a higher interest rate than normal banks. I have a local bank, but I transfer money back and forth. Plus ING has local ATMS I can use so I don't pay a fee if I need to use it. I've used HSBC too.

I also setup a Sharebuilder account for automatic withdrawals to purchase stocks. You can setup different times and they let you buy stocks in companies without having the full amount for a share. Lets you slowly gain shares in companies.

Plus you can invest in income companies. Basically, those are companies that pay you to have stock in their company. Some pay monthly, quarterly or annually. There is one that has paid out monthly for last 39 YEARS. Another has been paying out since 1907. Through the good and bad times.

Haha, nobody yet, but good suggestion! I use this everyday, especially as a driver. If I'm going to drive my ass off, might as well get the best price for that gas.

be careful! i know you'll go about it right, but -most- cases of botchulism(sp) are actually from people who improperly canned their own food.

also, have you thought of selling some of your soap and cleaning products online? that stuff generally sells well on etsy. you'd just need some eye-catching/cute packaging ideas and names. you could sell salsas and stuff too.

    Awww.....GasBuddy is awesome!

I am using my friend's car this week that takes mid-grade, and I just found it for $3.71 right up the street. Cool, cause I was stressing on filling up tomorrow morning.

not this isn't a good idea, really.

but i was wondering... just how much would i save a month if i got the cheapest gas in the area VS the most expensive.

so i used the cheapest price on that last 3.88 and the highest price on the list 4.09 and using my average gallon use per week... i found out that i'd save a whopping 8 dollars a month.

nevermind that the cheapest one is also fuck-all out of my way. heh

    DAMN IT!

    Sucks for you lol

mine is 3.99 instead of 4.39 you keep adding up 40 cents and sooner or later you can have another gallon and a little bit more

the gas station thats cheaper is on the way to my job so...makes sense for me why pay more when u can pay less?

its not a huge save but it can make a difference
