I just finished watching this HBO docu film on her case. I know there are many Australian girls on SW, and I was wondering what all of you think about it. I cried during her verdict. She seemed so genuine and innocent to me.

I'm not really sure. I went back and forth between thinking she was guilty and innocent.
There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Shes a local girl. It doesnt make sense to me at all, I cant believe that shes guilty.

an australian citizen - from Queensland who went to Bali and got caught with kilos of marijuana in a boogie board bag.
She is serving 20 years in a Balinese jail.

Australian woman convicted for attempting to smuggle approx 4kg of marijuana into Bali. She's become a tabloid celebrity over here. Mostly because she's quite a lot more attractive (not to mention more caucasian) than other convicted Aussie drug smugglers and also because her family and friends have not done a very good job of making her look innocent.
Initially I thought she might have been innocent, but it didn't take long to have one's mind turned around.
There was plenty of rumours circulating about her (and her family's) reputation on the Gold Coast as involved in the drug trade.
Her brother (that was travelling with her at the time of being caught) was arrested for drug related home invasion - he was subsequently convicted.
Rumours regarding the wealthy benefactor that at one point started bankrolling her legal team (who is apparently involved in the drug trade on the gold Coast and who has no history of assisting any other strangers with legal advice).
I don't know, she might be totally innocent, but I'd be suprised. at best I think she was covering for her brother or accidentally covered for her brother who would have been most unlikley to have any chance at sympathetic trial.

Damn, I can't belive she is guilty either, seeing as how this all went down...

Are u talking about that phone company guy? He was an odd character. I watched that channel 9 documentary the other night and he turned her trial into all about him and accused the whole Balinese justice system of being corrupt which did Shapelle no favours for her own trial.
I never heard he might have been involved in the drug trade?? Interesting indeed...

Nods. He didn't strike me as the kind of guy who was doing it out of the kindness of his heart.
Maybe he was just trying to cash in on free publicity.
There's a bunch more stuff on the schapelle Corby subject over at her wikipedia entry.

yeh i thought it was all about publicity for his business. Didn't he also get sued for passing off by Crazy Johns coz he basically just copied that business idea.

^^^That MadRon, Ron Bakir, was shown in the film quite a bit... I don't know, I got the idea that he had other motives.
I just read lots on the internet about the case that HBO didn't show. I did think her sister was shady. (Especially after her friend came forth and said that ther sis confided in her about successfully smuggling in drugs prior to Schapelle's arrest and had asked her to do it too)
I don't know, the whole thing was just heartbreaking to me. Maybe she did it or maybe not, but the conditions in the Bali jail were just so vile and disgusting. I couldn't imagine rotting in there for 20 years.
Anyhow, the HBO doc was done well and I think others on here would like it.

is this the same documentary that we just saw on channel 9 does anyone know?

^^^No, I don't think so b/c the channel 9 doc was 2 parts and titled The Hidden Truth. The HBO doc was called Ganga Queen, it premiered last night as part of their original film series.

I agree that the story is heartbreaking and i don't think that the death penalty (which is what could have been applied to Schappelle) is appropriate for drug smuggling, let alone marijuana.
The thing that is saddest to me about the issue is other Australian citizens get far less attention and support from the Australian public and media.

I think she's guilty. Doesn't mean I don't feel really sorry for her, and I don't think she deserves such a harsh sentence (even though she got a better sentence than lots of other drug smugglers). I just think that she did it.

Alcohol is more harmful than cannabis http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/p...0006.stm#drugs
Cannabis has several medical applications too
http://www.disaboom.com/Blogs/disabl...-you-high.aspxScientists have discovered an anti-inflammatory compound in marijuana that does not affect the brain, meaning it will not produce the same psychotropic effects as the plant's better-known anti-inflammatory component, THC. Researchers say that another cannabinoid, called beta-caryophyllene, or (E)-BCP, is already found in food items like black pepper and oregano, and could treat pain, nausea, and other ailments without getting patients high.
So it sounds like the laws and the authorities hurt people more than the substance itself.

I love Crazy / Mad Ron, lol. I dont think he copied Crazy John even though he got sued, that struck me as very lame - heaps of buisnesses in this country use that crazy type gimmick!
Re Shapelles family having a "reputation" for dealing drugs - I dont see how that makes her guilty either. Shes from the Gold Coast - you could say the same about half of the Gold Coasts population really. That doesnt mean anyones stupid enough to try to take drugs into Bali. (Especially when you live an hour from Nimbin like she did where you could easilly go to buy cheap pot and drive home and sell it for quite a healthy profit.) Thats my reasoning anyway, it doesnt make sense.
That was what i thought until I was told by a balinese expat that while most dope in Bali is really cheap, it is also crap by comparison to the stronger hydro stuff that is available in Australia.
Apparently tourists (particularly European tourists) are prepared to pay very well for the higher quality gear like the kind produced in Australia, thus making the risk viable for some.
Remember she was convicted for 4kg of gear which is a huge quantity. The story about it being a transfer of gear by Australian baggage handlers doesn't really hold up either. Sydney is only a 10-12hr drive from the Gold Coast and it would be substantially less risky and costly to move the within Australia by road.
I'm pretty sure that the Corby family's connection to drugs are well above and beyond the average Gold coast resident's connections.
I'm not saying she is definitely guilty or that there were no flaws in the prosecution's case. I just think there is a lot more going on that the public doesn't know about the case.

I find this case very interesting.

Yeah Ive heard that story too but considering the risk and penalties I dont buy it.
I think its more likey that someone who worked for the airlines / customs stashed it there.
How would you know anything about her family? That ay be the case but I still dont think its got owt to do with it. Why would you put a member of your own faily at risk, wouldnt you get some other sucker to do the dirty work?

There was a rumour that the wrong boogy board bag was grabbed to plant the drugs by an airline worker.
Also, why would someone smuggle a bunch of weed in such a FLIMSY bag? Like... it doesn't look like a boogie board, papa.
I don't know if she did it or not but her family's connections have nothing to do with her, in my opinion.
WHAT I DO THINK is that since the Airport have no footage, they have no proof and it should be thrown out of court and the weed smoked as celebration.
