Default Stripping is too good to me

I really need a few nights where I make less than $300 all in a row. I don't mean to sound ungrateful or braggy or whatever, but stripping is such good money, I don't think I can ever give it up! Until I can make comparable money someplace else, sheesh...

I just say this because I let myself get financially screwed, and I danced Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday--- tah dah!! Problem solved. Like the worst kind of end of the month stripper. But it totally works. I say 'I really need to sell 37 dances tonight', and I do. It's like pulling teeth sometimes, but it happens. This doom and gloom about the business dropping isn't really my experience. So I better start making hay while the sun shines on my pale ass, because this is ridiculous.

I have no idea if I'm expressing my sentiments the right way at all. I guess I'm proud of myself for being such a vigilant hustler/ happening to have the right enough look/ being in the right place/ whatever it is that is working out for me. I'm also exasperated because it makes it really hard to quit when I look at my regular job paycheck and laugh, because for a week's work it's what I made in three hours last night.

Oh stripping, I wish I knew how to quit you!

I wish I had that problem. I feel your pain though because thats how it was for me for a very long time and now I'm screwed...no money in stripping and no skills to do anything else..not to mention an 8 yr gap in work history.

OP, you took the words right out of my mouth. I agree.

(well, except for the part about wishing for some under-$300 nights! )

Yes, I understand your sentiment. though why not be happy and take advantage? Or are you one of those dancers who only banks when she really needs it? That's lucky too, I guess -- I think for a lot of girls it's the opposite.

I totally understand your feelings........It would be so hard to quit !

I'm not ready to quit, I still have a couple school years to finish first but I'm starting my law internship this September...I was thinking how hard it's gonna be to work 40 hours a week, and make the same salary as I would on a Friday night at the club than in two weeks in a law cabinet...

I wanted to stop dancing while I do my internship....but then how am I gonna sustain my lifestyle AND pay my January semester with that kind of money? It would be impossible...So dancing it is!

Be proud of yourself, and enjoy it while it lasts!

I think the other side of the coin is I kind of hate dancing. Heh. I love the money, and sometimes I really like it, and then sometimes I feel like I'm going to chew off my arm in order not to slap every guy who touches me. Me and dancing, we're so hot and cold. If I met me as another person, I'd totally tell me to never touch stripping with a ten foot pole. If it didn't make me so uncomfortable and creeped out sometimes, I'd be a lot less ambivalent about it.

Also, I do bank more when I need it. I try a lot harder. I know being desperate is supposed to be counterproductive, but it makes me really super tenacious. I'm way too passive otherwise, because when I don't need the money, I sometimes just don't want to dance for anywhere near unsavoury people. When I need the cash, anyone is game!

    I feel ya.

And Jewel, I'm kind of in the same shoes. I'm starting law/grad school next fall and can't imagine going back to the starving student lifestyle that I had for most of my undergraduate years.

man i know that feeling. i always say stripping gives you the freedom to do anything - except quit.

its so hard to put things in perspective when youre bringing home cash instead of having to wait for a paycheck, making your own schedule.. well, you guys know all the perks. it's mega hard for me to imagine transitioning into a typical job. even with my day job i have the WORST struggle being on time.. because being at work at 7:45 means ROUGHLY 7:45 to me.

That's why they call it a trap! It seems so ridiculous when you first hear that. I thought you had to be a total moron to get "trapped" in stripping. But yeah, that love/hate wave, I know it well.

The trouble is that for everyone the day will come when you can not do it anymore. Maybe it is for ankle/knee type reasons maybe it is just age and looks or maybe it is as CKXXX says that there just isn't any money in it any more.

As she says too many girls have no other skills and that huge gap in job history.

There are girls that have danced ever since they looked old enough to do it and all the sudden it's 15-20 years later and they can't do it anymore. Sure for a lot it started as a way to pay for school and some did make it all the way to a degree but because of the money and all the other "perks" just could not leave. Now they find themselves at 35 or so, the degree they earned but have never used is 8-10 years old, even if it is one that readily translated into a job and that is not always the case. Think about how many things were the hot jobs 15 years ago and now almost don't exist. Computer sci/software eng. for example is not anywhere near as popular or the big money job it was 15 years ago.

Yep. I have a BA in psych. I got it almost 15 years ago and I've never used it(technically anyway...believe me a psych background helped a LOT in this industry!!LOL). With that today I could MAYBE be a high school guidance counselor making a big fat $22K a year.

The shit thing is..I HAVE skills...very marketable skills...but with nothing on my resume for the past 8 years..I have no way of proving that now.

Thats one of the reasons my degree in in Criminal Justice. It won't ever go out of style. Most places only require like 33 hours to be hired now, so I should be good for a while. Still I know I'm totally trapped in stripping. I cringe at the thought of not bringing home "big" (comparatively) money every night. I used to make 400 bucks at a grocery store every week busting my ass....I can't believe I can make that in a night doing something I love.

^^ I hear you on the money. I recently decided to take myself out of the game for awhile, because my self-esteem was taking a beating due to my weight. I've (probably) landed a job making $10 an hour (which will be more like $7-8 after taxes)
and it makes me appreciate stripping like you have no idea!

I cannot imagine this being my only job. The only reason I can deal with making such pathetic money is that I know I'll soon be back in shape and making hundreds a night again at a club. Otherwise I'd go insane. Literally.

Actually, I'll probably keep the shit job for awhile even after I go back to dancing, just to remind myself how good I have it at the club, and how I have an amazing opportunity to make incredible money IF I work hard and don't slack off ITC. Every time I start feeling bitchy or negative about dancing, all I have to do is think of the low-paying grunt-work shit job and voila! Suddenly I'm downright ITCHING to get into the club and give some lapdances!

I get what you mean. I'm a high earner and I get this mentality of "I can spend money because tomorrow I'll make x!" in my head. It's hard not to because the money flows so easily.

You really have to buckle down hard and make sure you don't fall into the sustanence stripper stereotype.

When I started dancing, I knew it would be great money obviously and I've tried my best to maintain my lifestyle pre-stripping. For example, I got a super cheap $625 apartment when I could easily have afforded a super nice $1000 just working one extra night a month. You have to be careful, but I intend to milk this as much as I can.

^^Girl, you are so right. My horses are my biggest expense, and so long as I have them I know I need to dance. BUT that doesn't mean the rest of my life needs to fall into stripper-category expenses either. Weird mind set. Something to think about!

Also, I agree with the idea that somehow having a shit job keeps the dancing job in perspective. I'm ironically actually more likely to work hard at the club after I've worked eight hours of terrible. Both Saturday and Tuesday I worked longer than I usually do, and totally banked-- and both days I went to the club after working all day at the restaurant (so each of those days I worked 14 hours in total, while still mono-tastic). It's either adrenaline or 'look, now I can actually get PAID for working like a dog!!'

Thanks for all the input. I needed some perspective!

Aaaaaaand this is where you ladies put your stripper networking to use for you. There are tons of women we've worked with over the years in different industries who can help you with some references and work history, wink wink. Reach out and create that resume!

This is also a good time to remind you younger strippers to work a real job every once in a while or keep a small business on the side so you can fill those gaps more easily.

^^ Stripper networking is this cool thing...my boyfriend uses his strip club bartender status to entertain these government big wigs he golfs with, and then gets them to invest with him in his property deals. It's weird to me that he's this monkey for them, but monkey like a fox! if that makes sense. And this friend of ours who has done nothing but porn and dancing for the last five years got a job as a legal secretary through one of his connections...which is insane, since she can't type and doesn't speak French. But she's pretty! So it's possible.

Also, I got my current job with some white lies on the resume, since my last job ended four years ago and I thought that looked bad. They never even checked my references! Being an independent 'horse trainer' is pretty easy to make up.

thats why i have my day job. its only part time and sometimes i dont know why i do it, but then i remember that i cant have a big empty resume just because stripping paid my bills. i stressed about that a LOT pre-graduation and used to talk to one of the older girls at my club about it because i didnt know where my life would go with an empty post-college resume. i only decided to take the job at the school at the last minute. i had made up my mind i wasnt taking it, but the very last day of my internship i changed my mind.

and the networking, too.. man, when i used to work in baltimore, i used to say that if i had to quit wherever i was working at the time, i could probably get a job doing whatever i wanted bc i knew so many people! i didnt think of using that to fudge a resume. thats definately a good tip to remember!

Well you can always sell your horses, right? I mean, I'm sure you don't want to but I really believe that every woman needs an exit plan. Obviously I don't think there is anything wrong with stripping, but I don't think any woman should ever have to do it either. If you get to the point of wanting to burst into tears at the thought of some guy touching you, it's time to get out. And I don't think any of us know when/if we will be like that. I can't stand the thought of being in that mindset and being forced to strip because otherwise the rent won't get paid.

My next goal after getting my debt paid off is to get 3 months worth of living expenses in the bank so that if I have a break down, I don't have to dance.

AHH! my eyes kinda bulged out reading that. do you have any pets? would you sell them to stop dancing? no way!

(my best friend has horses and she actually gets depressed when she doesn't go to the farm enough to see them. maybe thats why that struck a chord with me.)

It's true, I can always sell my horses. One of them is worth quite a bit right now, but the market isn't trustworthy. He's also insured for a pretty penny, so I'm pretty safe on that bet. I could comfortably live off what he's worth for a full year.

And horses are *like* pets, but not quite pets, insofar as what other pet could you sell for $40 000? LOL. They are an investment too, or can be.

A savings plan is smart. That's another good idea I should stop thinking about and start doing something about.

britt - If I recall correctly, mollyzmoon discussed with me in person the possibility of selling her horse. I'm certainly not advising her to do it. Just if she has a break-down and can't dance or something, she could consider the possibilty.

Sorry sometimes it's weird posting on here to someone you know in real life!
