Do you give to charity? How often? How did you pick your worthy cause? Id like to give to that one that purchases farm animals for familys in third world countries anyone know which one im talking about? I also give to my local animal shelter, per my eight year old sons choice and donate new clothing to foster care agencys. What tugs at your heart strings?

I send donations when I read a news story that touches me & there's a fund set up due to hardship.

I also want to start a scholarship fund in the name of my uncle.....I'm a little annoyed at how his last wishes are being fufilled, so the least I can do is honor his memory in a way I'm certain he'd be proud of....

That's soo awesome that you even brought this up. The two groups that make my heart sing heavy metal ballads are homeless people and orphans in Africa. So I always keep gift certificates for McDonalds, etc in my car and hand them out and donate to Africa groups.

One group that I helped work with is and Children of the Nations. I actually spent a year in Malawi teaching 3rd grade and working with orphan kids there. These are some of the kids I worked with

But check out some of the stories of the kids from and donate to them if you want!! And if you buy their Global Night Commute book you'll see some of my photography in it

As a Jew, I'm "forced" (I like it) to donate 10% of my income to charity. For the longest time I've been doing it for Snuggles for Shelter but after 4 years and like 20k and countless blankets and not even getting a 'thank you', I'm feeling like a change.

I really want to do something to support Israel and maybe something else to help the local Jewish community be able to grow. We need a kosher deli, damnit!

I give a bunch of singles to the Humane society here when I go to their Kitty Heaven rooms. They very rarely have to put down animals there, so I feel even better about it.

i give when i can this year has been hard on me though, but i will. i usually give to animal charities or disaster charities. if a clebrity dies that i like a lot i donate to one of their causes.

when peter jennings died i donated to his women in need charity. i had the hugest crush on him for 12 years of my life haha.

I like to give to Oxfam. It partially relieves me of my white girl, first world guilt.

Even still, I'd like to think its better than to do it for that reason than to do nothing at all.

Every year I do Toys for Tots. I just blast through Target or Walmart and fill up the cart with a ton of toys. I do wish I could see the smiles on kids faces when they get a gift on Christmas. I had shitty Christmases as a kid and it hurt going back to school with everyone saying how much stuff they got when I got a batman, training bras and socks.

I would like to find something else I feel passionate about for the rest of the year though.

why are you forced? i know nothing of judaism so forgive me.

seems odd becuase of the whole stereotype that "jewish people are stingy with money"

I love the idea of keeping Mcdonalds gift certificates handy. I wonder if Oxfarm is the charity I heard about that buys farm animals for thirdword familys.

I know that the group I worked with, Children of the Nations, buys farm animals for orphanages all over the world. I was fortunate to be around when they got a huge delivery of pigs and got to help pig wrangle a little bit

I donate to St. Jude's whenever I can- as much as I can. I also donate a little cash to the local no-kill animal shelter a few times a year. And, once a year, I send $100 to the college I attended, which goes to academic scholarships. Since my parents paid for the majority of my school expenses, I feel it's the least I can do to help students who aren't so lucky.

Every December, my husband buys a boy's and a girl's bike and custom paints matching helmets, which he donates to Toys for Tots. And that is reason number 340583458 why I love him.

Religious doctrine. Everyone must give tzedakah (http://www.jewfaq.org/tzedakah.htm), even those who receive tzedakah. It's just below living a wholly religious life, so it's the 2nd most important aspect of Judaism.

Maybe the stereotype came from the fact that ANYONE would be stingy after giving away 10% of their income... or just plain old Antisemitism (not that you are Antisemitic, but there are many stereotypes and opinions about Jewish people based on a looooooooooooooooooong history of Antisemitism.)

I like to give to charity. I'm planning on giving my clothes to Good Will or the Vietnam Vets, I give canned goods whenever there's a drive, and I give to ASPCA. I also give to animal rescue shelters whenever I see them in the local pet store with pets for adoption or to local no-kill shelters.

I also use this site http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/c...faces?siteId=3 which claims a donation per click of .6 bowls of food. It's not much but it's something to do every day that may help.

Do you have a tzedakah box? Maybe you could give your pennies to the New Isreal Fund, but they're more geared towards social equality than delis. They did launch the first gay pride parade in Jerusalem though.

We also donate 10% of our income to charity. We pick different ones here and there but the most common place we donate is to the Red Cross.

By the way other religious doctrine requires the 10% thing too.

We don’t do it for any specific religious reasons though. We chose that amount because of family history. Both my hubby and I come from families that also donated 10% to charity all our lives. It's just how we were raised and I'm glad for it too

We hope to someday be able to donate more!

We donate rather randomly. Mostly to animal shelters and Childrens charities. The Shriners Childrens Hospital, most recently, I think.

Oh gosh, I hope it didn't sound like I meant only Jewish people donate 10% of their income to charity! That's not how I meant it!! It's just a HUGE tenant of Judaism, second only to the constant devotion to G-d and a religious life. I didn't mean to demean any other religion.

Oh honey, not all! No worries I just thought I'd toss it out there since some here seemed unaware that it's part of some religious teachings. I was going to list the religions but I can't remember them all, lol!

i dont necessarily give a monetary donation, but i participate in many autism related fundraisers and activities. last year i did an autism walk, and went to a basket bingo that benefitted the school i work for (for special ed kids but with a focus on autism) and bought extra raffle tickets etc, and spent money that was going towards the school.

i also recently bought 2 cases of cat food for one of the shelters that was in need of food for kittens since its kitten season.

those things may sound small, but i do things like that when the opportunity strikes.

i also click every single day, before i do anything else online (or when i get home from work so its technically the next day already) every tab on the hunger site. dont forget to do that, guys!

You mean Heifer International? I like that one-apparently a lot of their money goes to administrative costs, etc () but I like the idea of giving people the ability to carry on, not just a hand out.

I don't have a lot to give right now, but I donate to the local Goodwill, to aquariums when I visit them and sometimes to Modestneeds.org (small grants given to individuals for specific needs, like car repair or heating bill).

I'm going to sign up for igive.com as well, since when you click through them to certain store (including Lush, but sadly not Amazon) they donate to your favorite cause.

Check out http://www.kiva.org if you like the " charity the keeps giving" concept.

You fund a small business in a 3rd world country. Just a $50 - $100 donation can help a small business owner get their business started. Any amount can help really because they can bundle "loaners" together.

Your money gets repaid to you after 6 months to a year , so your donation is the oppurtunity cost of loaning that money.
You could loan $1000 for example .... your donation is the interest you lost on your $1000 had it been invested in another way, because you do get the pricipal paid back.

Kiva is an amazing charity that makes big differneces by helping people get out of the " live week to week " cycle in developing areas.

It seems cliche ... but yeah ... I have to the furry critters too.

Yes. Small tangent but if you really sift through the Bible/Torah and quantify out all the tithes then the total amount historic Jews gave to "charity" through sacrifices was almost closer to 30% I think. This is also in a time where what they gave was food and they always gave the first of their crop on the faith that they would have enough food to survive. Kinda makes you think....at least I did.
