well, first of all-- you didn't get what you wanted. If your hair couldn't be made to be the way that you wanted, then the hairstylist (if they're a good hairstylist) is supposed to say that they cannot do that and here's why.
and caramel is not lighter red.
you need to go back to the hairstylist and calmly explain that this was not what you instructed them to do. They should offer to fix it, or at the very least give you your money back. I would also suggest talking to the manager because perhaps they can suggest a different hairstylist of theirs that CAN do what the instructions were. a different hairstylist should be better because obviously the original one is description challenged. also, get some pictures so you can show what you want!
Now-- it's up to you at this point-- do you trust someone or do you go the DIY route?
depends on how adventurous you are. It sounds like you need to go to a professional to have this fixed.
However, being a huge fan of manic panic, it sounds like you could go that route.
Obviously with dark red which isn't very natural looking you're already walking a fine line between bright fun and funky and muted and seeming to pass as a natural hair color.
If you're okay with bright fun and funky, I would suggest Vampire Red which is the darkest red. you could also try to put some lighter red on the carmel-- or bleach the carmel (professional is better for this reason) and then do a lighter red.
look at the pictures here:
there's a woman who put it on her natural hair and it winds up darker than the others.
also-- I used to love mixing manic panic colors-- so if you get the black and the vampire red and mix a little bit of black to the red it should
make it darker (I used to mix pink with blue to keep blue from going green, and I used to mix purple with blue for the same reason-- I also used a small amount of blue or purple with the pink to keep the pink from turning orange.)
or try this color--

Like fancygirl said, go back to the salon and bring pictures. If you're not comfortable dealing with the same stylist, ask to speak to the salon manager and/or owner.
Honestly, it should be an easy fix- an application of demi-permanent color should do the trick.

but manic panic doesn't hurt your hair. maybe the other stuff doesn't either but I doubt it; most dyes do.
since her hair is already a sort of red it should fade-- and if you mix dyes I notice it doesn't fade nearly so much.

^^^ If the color Brenditia is sugesting is a demi permanent color, chances are it's just as gentle as MP but longer lasting. If it's a Loreal demi, it's ingredients are probably similar to Redken's Shades EQ- which I use in the salon daily and it gives beautiful color and shine without damage.
I'm not a fan of MP or any other semi permanent color... it's the easy and gentle way to get vibrant color but the fading is maddening. If you're looking for a natural shade, a demi can deliver the color you want with longer lasting results.
^why aren't you going back to the salon to have them fix it?
well, at the very least, write a letter to the place and perhaps a higher up if it's a chain...
can't you have a friend go with you to bitch them out? this is really not appropriate for a business.
did you pay and tip for it?

yup--complain on craigslist too!
Actually, if I were you, I would just get a darker red dye and dye my own hair all over. The highlights she gave you will pick up more of the color, making it brighter but also lighter than the rest of your hair. So you will actually easily have dark red hair with lighter red highlights.
