    Default I picked my career....!!

I've been hemming and hawwing about actually getting a "real" job in the "real" world (as opposed to my fake job in this plastic world) and I finally found the PERFECT job.

I can work nights. If I'm forced to work Friday nights, I'm saving lives so I can still maintain my Jewish Shabbat. I will get paid around the same. I can FINALLY make use of my years weightlifting and having thicker arms won't be so terrible. My history won't nearly matter as much if someone finds my magazine as doing something else (like police) would. I can still be physical and I'm small enough to fit into cracks and small spaces to save more people. I'm still young enough to start this career.

    I'M GONNA BE A FIREFIGHTER.

I made the phone call and I get my training packet in the mail early next week. From there I'll be taking my courses and exams and physicals and hopefully I'll get to be a firefighter in a couple years (only 60 make it a year, eek!).

I really think this is the job for me that can transition me out of dancing some day. Not for maybe 5-10 years but enough so I have a background and a history to keep me in the industry of actually earning a living after I have to hang up the boots.

Sure, I can die, but in this instance, I really think it'd be worth it.

Good luck with it. My friend did all the training and is very fit and found it really hard to get accepted. He went through so many rounds and interview processes, which have taken him ages and has just got in to be a firefighter for one of the airports. So tough to get into, but rewarding work if you do.

VERY tough to get into. I'm going to be working really hard. I should be starting my training in a few months time.

I really think this is the most perfect career to get me out of stripping. No need to explain work gaps either!

*clap clap clap clap* YAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's awesome And I guess you won't need any fireman's pole training

I don't know where you work but in my area there is sooo much competition for firefighters that basically all of them go through EMT/Paramedic before being hired. Is this how your area is too?

    That sounds exciting.

I don't wanna be a partypooper, but if the culture in NZ is anything like it is in the US, you are likely to face a lot of bullshit from misogynistic males who won't accept you and who will use your adult work as ammo for giving you trouble. I have met women who unfortunately faced this here. I sincerely hope it's different culturally by you!

That sounds like a great plan. I hope you don't deal with too many assholes, and fly through that training!

Not really the same. And I'm Aussie, not NZ. But men here really don't give ya shit if you find out and if they do, you just play it off by teasing them back. Australians are very laid back and don't care but like to pick on people for the hell of it. If you can pick back, everything is cool/

Yeah if I don't tell anyone what I did and I use my real name, the most I'll probably get picked on for is being female in general.

And I told the firefighter that recommended the job to me, "Hey! I can use the pole!" (He knew what I did and thought I'd be a GREAT firefighter. He works a way heaps far away unit though so I'd never see him.)

I am fairly certain I don't have to but it would probably be helpful in getting the job.

Congrats! That is a fantastic career and I'd think it would be sexy as hell if you saved my life from a burning building.

my brother is a volunteer firefighter and studying to be an EMT (and?) paramedic. i dont know all the terms and distinctions, so i dont know if those mean the same thing, or if he's doing both.

have you considered doing volunteer firefighting while you're in the process? i dont know how that works in australia but that could help your chances since it's such a selective process.

i'm sure things are different over there but i know it's really hard here to become a career firefighter, too. plus you'd get the experience, make sure it's something you really want to do, and it can be just as rewarding since that's one of the reasons you want to do it.

That's so cool. Start building up your muscles though now! I could never be a firefighter because I'm too small and could never lift enough weight.

    Good luck girly!

Yeah, like Britt said, volunteering will really help. Being strong will be at your advantage too. Also, being a girl will probably help because the employers might want to help even up the gender balance.

I think a firefighter photo shoot is needed!

Ditto Britt's advice again. And at least around here a lot of it is who you know (EMS is a small community) and volunteering will give you the chance to WOO everyone and get them on your side to help you out for selections

I am really strong. I always have been. I used to be a weightlifter and I'm sure I've mentioned it enough times on here to make people . Hahaha. I'm really short but I can leg press 300 kilos (over 600 pounds) and bench press like 150kg (300 pounds) and dead lift somewhere in the 200kg range... so I can definitely lift a few people to safety. (I know I can lift large people but not sure about dead weight. I've lifted a few 6'6" friends that are like 200kg.)
