    Default Declawing Alternatives for Kitties?

    http://www.softpaws.com/

Anybody ever try this crap? I love my kitty, but to be honest her nails drive me nuts. I don't want to declaw her since its supposed to be very painful and could make her depressed. I'm thinking of ordering these, thoughts/opinions?

I have purchased and used them. They are quite good but be prepared to have to replace them kind of frequently. I found that about 3-5 fell off a week.

Yup. My kitten has them on right now... I have to put them on every 4-6 weeks

Her current ones have been on for 2 weeks.... the first few times I put them on they came right off within days but Ive gotten better at getting them on. Now they stay on until the nail has grown out enough for me to cut them off (along with clipping the nail) and then put the next set on.

How did you get them to stay on? I was never so successful at that.

Practice... and having the correct size made a HUGE difference. Currently she has small on front and med on back.

I wrap her up in a towel and pull one paw out, clip the nails. I then fill the softpaw with glue - slide it on so it fits flush (no gap between nail and softpaw) When Ive finished ALL nails I hold her an extra 5-10 minutes while the glue dries.

The first few times she freaked so I let her go - she started messing with the things and since they hadnt fully dried to her nail she got a gap between nail and cover. Later she just chewed them off....

Here a vet visit is $50 plus fees for services...... for $50 and a car trip I'd just rather put them on myself. It's not really that hard. They do fall off but I can't imagine what the vet would do differently? You just apply the glue, put it in the nail as deep as it will go, hold and then you're done.

Every 4 weeks can add up fast! Its really not that difficult to do yourself once you get the hang of it.

Thanks, I think size was the issue. I think they were maybe too small becuase I couldn't push them down enough.

Ahhh it sounds like a bitch at first. Then again I do all kinds of annoying beauty practices that take up most of my time, so whats one more for kitty.

It's not that hard if you have a passive kitty. I can only see it being much trouble if your cast is aggressive or very independent and hates being held and you messing around with his paws.

Thanks for this thread. My kitten has been driving us nuts with his clawing of the furniture. He never scratches people, but I'm worried that my furniture and carpets will be in shreds by the time he gets through this phase. I've used Soft Paws before and they were great. Hopefully I will have good results again.

I worked at a vet's office and we did this a lot. It was A LOT cheaper to do than NewMoon had said. Check around. Like someone else said getting the right size makes a huge difference. We charged $15 for an application.

what is it about her nails that are bugging you? Because there's way to train the little snots to focus that scratching on only a couple objects.

hmm, there's gotta be some sort of positive/negative reinforcement thing you could do-- like praise her when she first is on you and doesn't use her nail, but the second she does maybe use a ref's whistle and whistle really loud.

I don't know-- an animal behaviorist would have a better answer I'm sure.

how short do you keep her nails anyway? that could also help, even though she would eventually sharpen them into points.

My cats never clawed the furniture, but my one cat did claw the carpeting. She refused to use her scratcher. Then I researched into it and found some cats prefer different types of scratching posts. While Peanut was fine with the sisil rope type scratchign post, Butter prefers a carpet type post. SO i bought this scratchign post that has sisel on one side, carpeting on the other. I sprinkled cat nip on it and showed it to the cats...and the scratchign up my house stopped instantly. they both use the post all the time now, and never scratch on anything else.

I'm sure the groomers at Petco or Petsmart could do it - they groom cats, too.

Nope. Theyre not allowed to or some crap like that. I got Petco to do it once but they after that once they said they dont/wont/cant do it....

It really not that hard!!! My kitten was ferrel and shes a brat and bites and scratches and gets all tense and fights me. If I can get them on her (all alone) anyone on here can get them on their cat.

Omg the pink ones are really cute! I only get boy cats, but he'd be wearing pink. So freaken cute.

Good luck applying them. I wouldn't stress my cat out by putting him in the car and taking him to the vet and waiting and paying and taking him home...all for something I could do safely myself, no thanks.

I've only read the original post.

My previous cat to my current cat (Marnie) had them ... she took to them well enough. Unfortunately , the other cat in this household (Puddy) didn't take to them. Fucking expensive little shit (said with affection) ... after paying for them and having the vet apply each one (to all his claws) ... yeah... he took them off. He somehow managed to figure out a way to rip them off...

so we stick to clipping his claws now.

(He is not that horrid in re clawing.. we did it as a preventative measure)

I'm going to see how Marnie takes to this product as she isn't "keen" on getting her claws clipped.. I've only managed to do one whole paw and one nail from one of her hind legs so far today. She kinda freaks out whenever I try at the moment.

I'm only wanting to do it to her because when you hold her or have her on your lap or chest.. she tends to "kneed" .. and um.. OUCH... otherwise she is fine (doesn't claw anything she is not supposed to claw).
