You're the one who said you wanted a separate account. I was just trying to tell you that it's really simple to do but you seem dead set on giving reasons why you shouldn't bother.

Because there ain't no tits on the radio

Then open your own account and don't tell her about it.
I mean, why is that so hard?
And just because she knows your social security number doesn't give her the right or the permission to check on your credit! So what she knows your SocSec? You can still lock it down so that if she doesn't know the password/phrase, she cannot access your credit files!
You are an adult. Your mom is not being overprotective...she's being excessively controlling. She's going to continue doing this until you stand up for your rights to your own life/privacy without her butting her nose in.
You do what you have to do, but jeezus.
And, it really is simple to get your own account...without telling your mom. Just walk into the bank and do it. AND you can still get your own account (without your mom) with the same bank (which would probably be easier than going to a different bank).
Just make sure to put a password/phrase on that account so your mom cannot access that one, as well.

you can also use the local Credit Union angle ... that you're saving money / earning higher interest via opening an account with a local Credit Union - but one that your mother 'unfortunately' is not eligible to join due to her out-of-state residency !
You CAN tell her if you WANT to. Simply say you are an adult and want your privacy to handle your finances as you see fit. Period. She can hem and haw all she wants but you are an adult and have every right to do this.So be an adult and DO it.
If you dont stand up to her now, she'll interfere forever.
