Default What unusual pets own you?

I say own you coz I dont like the term "owning" a pet and I think it's more the other way around LOL.

This can be current pets or pets who have owned you in the past.
For those who can be bothered tell us what is involved in keeping this pet or some cute stories etc.

    I'll start:

    - 5 bearded dragons (for those who don't know it's a native Australian lizard).
They make great pets. They have to be kept in a vivarium with a heat and light source. They eat crickets, cockroaches and mealworms. They also eat vegetables. They are really friendly and don't mind being handled. They display funny behaviorus such as head bobbing - this is an aggressive behaviour to show dominance to fellow beardies. They also do arm waving - where they will wave their arm around in circles - this is a submissive behaviour. So they will often sit there with one bobbing and one waving back.

    - 2 turtles

    - seahorses. They didn't live very long Marine fish are very difficult to keep.

I had them out of their cages all the time. They will eat anything that moves that they can fit into their mouths. Mine tried to eat a mouse that got into my house once but the mouse ran away.

I couldn't set them loose as in just let them go coz they would die without their heat source and to keep them I had to have a wildlifekeeping licence and had to account for any births, deaths or escapes each year. Plus I loved them!!

I don't know if Meimers owning me counts. She's just a cutie baby Rosella, but nobody else in the world I know has a handtame one.

Definately counts, not your common pet. I should have put this in pic post so people could post pics!

    saltwater tanks ftw!

i keep coral reef tanks, specializing in uber-small tanks (nanos and picos, <30g and <3g systems). basically, i keep and aquaculture live corals. my specialty/preference are sarcophyton sp. (i.e. toadstool/leather corals).

but my current 75g setup is an albatross on my neck nowadays. i too fuggin lazy and too much invested $$$ to just chuck it. ugh.

i'm currently working on another (2nd generation) very low-tech and very green (using sunlight as the lighting source) pico-tank.

there's actually a couple of other reeefers (girls) here! to my pleasant surprise. i won't out them though.

but for some odd reason, the seahorse niche of our hobby is dominated by women. regular reefing is like 95% men. seahorsing is (from my estimates) 65%+ women. weird.

a couple of the sites i visit: nano-reef.com, seahorse.org, reefcentral.com, and reefs.org; they're all very good sites for the sw hobby info.

but it's nice to see another sw'er, jaiz!

I've got a ball python. I used to breed Uromastyx.

I've had everyone at some point. Anoles, frogs, agamas, green snakes, beards, dozens of small lizards, monitors and tegus. I worked in a pet store and developed a habit of taking home sick or unwanted critters.

She's not the smartest bird like a lorikeet or cockatoo, but she's really smart. Like, she knows that throwing seed at my head pisses me off and that laughing and wolf whistling at me makes me happy. And she knows how to blush and cuddle and be cheeky... she can learn tricks and stuff easily... but she's not very good at figuring things out on her own.

You can train them out of that. I did with Meimers and she rarely whistles unless she sees me and/or we're dancing with her music.

Ignore the everloving fuck out of them. Mei Mei craves attention and she gets absolutely none when she misbehaves. not even a glance. I'll even purposefully walk away. When they stop, love them again. Cuddle..attention...squawking? Byebye birdy back in cage..oooh look TV!

After awhile (like two weeks, really) she learned that being a bad bird doesn't get her anything. So she doesn't bite, doesn't chitter and only whistles when she sees my already paying attention to her and lovin on her - and only then it's the whistles I trained her I liked. If she does the 'bad whistles' (squawky chirpy loud ones) I ignore her again.

Wow, your bird is gorgeous and sounds like an awesome companion.

Not really unusual, but I have a ball python. And my cat thinks himself something special

Jaizaine, I've thought about getting dragons before, and I've also considered birds, but I'm not sure how kitty would react to that!

I had a pet cricket about a year ago that my ex killed, actually claiming he didn't know crickets needed water. Or maybe it just fucking died on it's own.

I used to have a bearded dragon. He was wayyyy cool
When I was growing up my dad handtamed large birds for rescues. So we frequently had Macaws and Cockatoos and African Greys fluttering around the house. The babys were so cute, and the adults just AWESOME to handle. I miss those days!

well, not me but...my mom uesd to have iguanas. She knitted them little harnesses and took them for walks. They ran loose in the house and were trained to stand near the bathtub if they had to go potty.

Well, I have had every pet known to man.

My favorites were our Savannah Monitor Lizards. They're VERY big (size of small dogs, not including their tail), and are just little loves. 2 we adopted late in their lives, and they were aggressive...but the third we had from a very small infant, and she was just a love. We gave her the run of a room (As Jaizaine said, we didn't let her have full reign, as we had to control temperature and such)

If you sat on the floor, she would scurry over, climb into your lap,a nd curl into a ball to sleep while you pet her.

Monitor will eat anything (meaty) you put in front of them, from dog food and liverwurst to bugs and mice. Dog food and liverwurst type items really shouldn't be fed to them (except as special treats) so her main diet was baby mice and crickets.

I've also had all kinds of snakes (including pythons and cobras), tarantulas, scorpions, iguanas, varieties of turtles, birds...and the list goes on.
