    Default F-ING recalled food

You can't buy any produce or beef without having an iffy feeling. It's like you have to grow your own garden with all these salmonella and e colli warnings. When I went to the grocery store I noticed that they were not selling avocados! What?!!!! them too?! My question is: What about the canned, frozen, and things made with those recalled foods? I haven't seen anything about that. They make tomato sauce, salsa, premade guacomole, etc. with that stuff?

go to a local co-op or local farmer's market to buy your produce. even those guys selling peaches on the side of the road are safer than buying it in a store.

^^Farmer's market ftw. Love the one I go to, and they've got all kinds of shit I can't even find at the grocery store.

I'm pretty snobby about food. I do all my shopping at natural food stores, co-ops and farmers markets. So I never worry about getting bad food. The meat and fish is all local and my milk products are all local and organic. Do you know how much hormones they put in the conventional stuff. It's really bad.

I mean, I'm not perfect, and I'll even hit a drive thru once in a while, but I like to try to eat as best I can. Luckily, it's easy to do that in my neighborhood.

I don't understand how buying from a farmer's market or natural food store means it doesn't have e. coli on it.

Canned foods are usually involved in recalls. Canned tomatoes and fresh tomatoes usually come from the same farm (Big industrial produce farms). The only exception to this is when they can locate the source of the original contamination.
For example, there was a beef recall a few years back, but not ALL beef...just meat from a specific plant in Texas (which happened to supply something like 75% of public school's hamburgers )

Now they are saying the current e.coli outbreak may not be related to tomatoes at all. Nice. It should be noted that there are germs like this in almost ALL our food. It's only when the concentration of e.coli or another pathogen becomes so great that it makes people sick.

With the food growing, processing, and selling system being so industrailized....things like e.coli and salmonnilla outbreaks are inevitable.

I highly recommend farmer's markets and buying from local farms.

    It doesn't.
Organic produce and meats are just as likely to be contaminated with e.coli and salmonilla as "non-organic" products.

The reason food from small farms (organic or not) is less like likely to make you sick is beause is is a small-scale operation.

The reason we have major e.coli, etc. outbreaks is because of the industrial food growing, processing, and selling system. We've always had germs in our food, but major outbreaks like this are new because once something gets in the system its easy to spead.

how do you avoid contaminated food??

smple- don't raise animals for food.

I might be wrong, but isn't e.coli and salmonella all linked to raising livestock for food? The contamination happens when an infected animal gets their grossness in the groundwater and then it affects everything else- right?

because... growing plants on their own certainly does not spawn deadly bacteria.

    Exactly.

If anyone is really intersted in this subject (as I obviously am LOL). Check out these books.

"There is shit in the meat" ... that is the only direct quote I remember from Fast Food Nation. I was sooo disgusted when I read that line the first time. You could go on a dry produce diet if your really concerned about the outbreak. Ive never heard of wheats or grains being completely tainted.

Most of the contamination comes from the water that the produce is rinsed in.
Which is why (for instance) in the tomato recall, tomatoes still on the vine were omitted because they aren't soaked in water like loose tomatoes are.

Its all from the mishandling and poor processing of produce - local and smaller farms usually process their goods less - which is why they are usually considered safer during times of recall.
