    Default Donating furniture question

Okay so obviously crisis shelters, homeless shelters and salvation army would SEEM to be the ticket to donate used furniture that's not disgusting or even broken in.

However, I"m having a hell of a time finding a company that will come pick it up from my apartment!

I live on a 3rd floor walk up. And it's a very old building so the stairs are narrow and weird. I will kill myself trying to remove a bed.

I'm not going to bother to sell it (although I'm sure I could get 200 for it) I rather just donate it.

Anyone have any suggestions or know of any place in Chicago?

You could put it on Craig's List under "free stuff". You will get a lot of callers who no-show but eventually someone will come for it.

Organizations I know of that do pickups.

    Saint Vincent DePaul SVDP
    Goodwill
    AmVets call all the time.

As far as I know AmVets run routs and call you to schedule if they are in the area.

SVDP schedules after you call as does Gooodwill.

None of that is Chicago specific experience. I have worked with SVDP they do good work with all volunteer staff.

I contacted Salvation army on the southside (I couldn't find one closer), 2 womens shelters.

    As far as Craigslist goes.....

Have you ever had free shit to be removed from your home? Put that in an ad and then prepare to take a valium. I did it ONCE and I had at least 40 emails within seconds. And by then I chose to either throw it out or donate because everyone was INSANE that wrote...

After reading those responses I would not feel secure in having those same people possibly coming into my apartment.

Oh, I've done it. I've dealt with the no-shows, the emails, and the nut jobs. I also gave a drafting table to an art student who couldn't afford one and a washing machine to a guy with four kids who was working three jobs while his wife was going through chemotherapy and not able to work. The salvation army or a shelter is certainly easier but from what you said they don't seem to be interested (same thing happened with my washing machine by the way).

I didn't say CL would be a bowl of cherries, just that it would work...

You've got a good point about them coming in to your apartment though. I left my stuff on the back porch.

Yeah if i could get it down to the alley even i would be pleased. I can't for the life of me get a floppy bed down basically a spiral narrow staircase. The only alternative is to toss it out this big ass window into the alley

Which I gave serious thought to. You wouldn't notice the bang considering where I live n' all. People would just think it's either fireworks or gun shots. It's one of our bloodiest summers.

Example on the free bed thing. I did run an ad for it and took it down within 12 hours because of the mass amount of emails. Anyways, This guy Pete keeps emailing me...and now is offering to bring me "sushi and beer" dude what the hell?! lol who does that.

Not that I wouldn't want said sushi. But regardless. A bit odd.

Call some churches and see if they might have a member with a truck who would pick up your stuff and take it to the charity of their choice.

If you are getting new furniture, often the store delivering it will haul the old stuff away and donate it for you.

I've rented a truck, then written the value of the furniture, the rental fee for the truck, and the charitable rate for milege off my taxes as donations. Be sure to get a receipt.

Instead of Craig's List, try Freecycle

I've done a lot of freecycling and never had any problems.

I'm a freecycler as well. Actually, the last thing I gave away was a couch lol! Freecycle seems to have more normal people than craigslist. I know with ours, you have to apply to join and they monitor your freecycle behavior, so if you're a nutjob, you're out.

^thank you! My mom was mentioning this site but I assumed it was just something local for her city/town.

I can't believe The Salvation Army wouldn't come pick up your stuff. They came and got mine when I moved from Seattle. I guess their policies vary from state to state.

I don't think it's policies as much as laziness on who ever is doing delivery and pick up that day.
