    Default Sushi and parasites?

I use to eat a lot of sushi but stopped eatting it a while back because I read something about the possibility of parasites. It scared me b/c with my gastrointestinal issues I worry I might have done/do something to offset it.

Does anyone else know or have any accurate information regarding eatting sushi and the risk of intestinal parasites?

I have also heard this. A few nurses, R.N's specifically told me to avoid sushi and any raw fish or meats in general.
I used to eat beef carpachio sometimes, and
I used to be a sushi hound....I ate it like a mad woman all the time.
I got burnt out on it, also like you I was wary of potential parasites.
I think even if the fish is fresh it can still harbor parasites.
I am not an expert on this though.

thats why the japanese eat it with wasabi sauce - the wasabi kills any bacteria or parasites. at least thats what a japanese guy told me.

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

Sushi is made form saltwater fish, and sushi chefs are trained to look for eggs or worms. There is a small risk, but it's very very low.

Yes I forgot, wasabi does have an antiparisitic action (?)
Parasites can be microscopic though so they may not be visible
to the naked eye. Like I said Im not an expert on this.
I am going to google it.

    Found this online....

"Raw seafood can also be the vector for various pathogens, viral, bacterial, as well as larger parasitic creatures. Proper sanitary conditions must always be met or any raw food could possibly make one sick.
Anisakiasis is a particularly nasty and potentially fatal infection caused by microscopic larval worms that live in some marine creatures that can be avoided by thorough cooking, or certain deep freezing techniques, which are required by law in the United States for certain sushi grade items. While rare, it is one of the many risks inherent in all uncooked sea foods.
Fortunately incidents of illness from sushi are few and far between. More people are sickened by contaminated produce in the US than by sushi, so at least for now, purveyors of sushi seem to be maintaining proper sanitary practices.
And before you ask, tapeworms require a freshwater stage in their lifecycle, so as long as you stick to the saltwater fish you should be fine. No one should ever eat freshwater fish raw under any circumstances as the risks of parasitic infection increase dramatically due to the large number of freshwater parasites that exist, the freshwater ecosystem being a much better environment for parasitic creatures.
Fortunately, sushi is as safe as any other food as long as proper handling conditions are met. While certain individuals should take steps to minimize particular risks due to their current condition, for most of us, sushi is as safe as it is good for us. That said, it is wise to make sensible decisions as to where you will be eating sushi, and if an establishment looks as though it may not be taking the proper precautions, it is best avoided. Be smart and you should have no problems finding an enjoyable and delicious sushi meal."
"I believe that if life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade.
And try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka and have a party."
