    Default guinea pigs

i have this undeniable urge to get one, i had one when i was little. anyone have one as a pet? pros or cons? cage setup idea etc?

hows the cage smell to that of a ferret or rat?

do they make bunny sized poops or smaller?

i had one when i was in kindergarden so i dont recall all these details. ive been lokinking at info online, but id like some personal experiances if possible.

and no i dont impulse pet buy, so dont worry about that.

I loved mine! he was the sweetest thing ever,,when I used to call his name he would squeal for me.
I just got him a rabbit cage but he was out all the time. Not sure what rabbit poo looks like but his poo was very small.
It smells nothing like a ferret cage, they smell pretty strong.
I think they are awesome pets.

I liked the smell of the wood shavings. I only knew one as a kid and since the crate was clean, it smelled clean (from what I remember.)

    I'm curious about sugar gliders.

    I had two guinguins.
I could call them by their names.
One time they fell asleep inside of a sweatshirt underneath my bed, so cute.
Guinea homes need to be cleaned regularly. Mine were potty trained.
If guineas get diarrhea you must take them to the vet immediately, they can die with in a day if they have it.
    They like to talk.

    CLEAN THEIR CAGE OFTEN.

My abusive to animals mum rarely did and because of it she stuck them outside 'because they smell' and they died of hypothermia. All she had to do was clean the cage once a week more often and they'd be fine. :/ There IS NO smell if you just clean the cage.

And don't give 'em iceberg lettuce. Like humans, a lot of filler, not many healthy bits. Give carrots, bok choy, dark greens...

im still debating. i found a site that says you can use towels and fleece blankets as bedding and then papers underneith or even wheat litter.

i used to have rabbits and they were litter trained.

Make sure you get two. They need a companion and will get depressed if they're alone. And, unless you want a lot of guinea pigs, make sure they are the same sex. Craigslist is a good place to look.

Here's a great site for making your own cage: http://www.guineapigcages.com/. If you clean the cage every week you won't have a problem with odors. Poops are about the size of a tic-tac, which is good for this kind of prank.

For those of you who litter trained yours, how did you do it? I can't let mine run around because they keep messing on the floor.

mine were trained to go potty in their house. What you do is monitor them when they play, and when the need to go to the bathroom put them in their home or litter box. They will catch on, praising them when they potty in the correct place always helps.

Mine was so sweet. They dont smell at all as long as you keep the cage clean. Bunny size poops...yeah about that. They ususally poo in one corner of the cage..I had a little corner litter box in her cage in she went in that which made cleaning every day a breeze!

She would get SOOO excited when we came home(like if we were gone all day at work)..she'd run back in forth in her cage making high pitched squeals...getting louder and louder until you went over and talked to her. She also purred when you pet her...her whole body would quiver she purred so hard!! Patches(she was a calico)was such a sweet little girl!

Sadly she got cancer and when it got really bad we had to put her to sleep..but she lived a long time..about 4 years.

And def. dont get two opposite sex! They breed like bunnies...as SOON as the babies are old enough( they reach sexual maturity at 3.5 to 4 weeks !)they'll knock up mom,sisters...any female nearby.

Try the shelters around you...they sometimes have guinea pigs too!

this one looks like my Patches... http://www.gotpetsonline.com/picture...inea-pig-0573/

Do not get a cage with a wire bottom. Keep in mind that Cavies have bad eyesight so handling them quickly scares the daylights out of them. Monitor the growth of their teeth at all times. They can get way too long and become a health hazard. Trim their toenails!
