    Default Why Wheatgrass? How to...

    Hello ladies!!

I have noticed a lot of posts about detox diets, many of you are going wheat free, gluten free, refined food free, started juicing, etc.

So, I thought I would share a little knowledge with you! I grow wheatgrass at my house, and drink it every single morning. If anyone else wants to know how to do this, I will post all of the instructions!

First, here is some background information, unless you aren't familiar with this oh so powerful and wonderful juice... Starting with the benefits:

Wheatgrass is the closest know thing to the human blood as far as its molecular structure.

*reduces high blood pressure, enhances capillaries

*removes heavy metals from the body (bye bye Mercury!!)

*improves digestion process, high in enzymes

    *keeps hair from graying

*when gargles, cures a sore throat

    *eliminates toothaches when gargled

*washes drug deposits from the body

*improves blood sugar problems (I no longer am considered hypoglycemic when I get blood work!)

    *neutralizes toxins in the body

    *refines and makes over tissues

*can heal heal scars formed in the lungs from breathing acid gases (WE ALL WORK IN SMOKE!!)

Here is the catch... Wheatgrass MUST be juiced and drank IMMEDIATELY to get all of the vitamins/minerals/benefits. After letting the juice sit for just 5 minutes, over 60% of the vitamins are diminished. Therefore, don't waste your money on frozen wheatgrass, powders, pills etc. Also, Jamba Juice has OLD wheatgrass (they keep it until it turns, weeks or sometimes months after it is worthless)... don't bother!

How would you suggest someone go about growing it?

    nooo.....

I use a plastic box with a cover. I place a moist towel in the box, sprinkle wheatgrass seeds over said towel and cover. If it gets too moist I leave it uncovered for a few hours. I leave it in a sunny window. The seeds sprout, grow, and in just a few days are ready to harvest. NOM.

I eat my wheatgrasses... lol... I eat them as sprouts so it never grows very tall. Looks like you might need taller grass for juice. I suppose if you want to juice it you can put the seeds in soil. It's an extra step but no big deal.

This is exactly why I wanted to post this... There are SO MANY misconceptions about wheatgrass and how to grow it.

Wheatgrass can't be grown hydroponically, this is because it needs the nutrients found in the soil.

Wheatgrass should NEVER be in direct sunlight, or grown outdoors unless in a temperature controlled greenhouse.

Wheatgrass should not be allowed to grow long... There is a certain length by which it must be harvested, after which its nutrient content begins to decline.

Up next... the whole how to....

    Things you will need:

    *two growing trays (about 17x17)

*potting soil, part peat moss (1 part peat moss to 3 parts regular potting soil) - Lambert from Home Depot has this ratio already mixed

*1 lb hard winter wheat seeds from wholelifegreens.com or other retailer

    *spray bottle

    * gallon Ziploc baggies

*juicer- can be bought on Ebay or elsewhere… If you want an inexpensive one that works well I recommend the ‘Manual Wheatgrass Juicer by Lexen Products’ which can be found for about $30. However, it is manual, and takes time to clean. Make sure any juicer you use is for wheatgrass… as the stringy nature of the grass may break some juicers!

    1. Place your hard winter wheat seeds in a bowl/pitcher, cover with water and allow to soak 8-12 hours.

    2. Take your Ziploc baggie, and use the tip of a sharp knife to pole holes in it, large enough for water to get through, small enough for the seeds to stay in. Pour your seeds inside, and rinse them. Continue to do this for about two days, rinsing three times a day then allowing to drain. Leave them in the baggie during this sprouting process, they are ready to plant when there are small white “tails” on them.

    3. Do this step outside… Pour your soil/peat moss mixture into one of your growing trays until full. Use the second one to push down the soil, so it is packed in. Remove the second tray, and cover the soil with your sprouts.

    4. Water heavily, but gently, so the tray drips but you do not disturb your sprouts. Bottom side down, cover your sprouts with the second tray. Do not push down, just rest it on top. This tray will remain until your sprouts begin to look like grass, will only take a day or two. In the meantime, use your spray bottle to water your sprouts three times a day, never let them dry out.

    5. Continue watering 3x a day until your grass is ready to harvest, you will be amazed how fast it will grow. Here is a picture at day 4…

    6. In between 7-12 days, you will be ready to harvest your grass. You will know when a second blade begins to shoot out of your grass, like this . You must harvest all of your grass now, if you leave it after this period it will loose nutrients.

    7. To harvest, lift up a handful of grass (as seen on the picture showing the roots) and use scissors to cut that section as close to the soil as you can get. Place this section in a Ziploc baggie, continue process until all of your grass is cut (about two gallon baggies full, yum!)

    8. Your grass will stay fresh in the fridge for about two weeks, drink about two ounces of juice once or twice a day. More will not hurt you, but it also won’t do anything more for you… Four ounces is a day is the maximum any person needs.
Let me know if you have any other questions, enjoy!!

Odd question. Is this similar to pet grass? Just wanted to know, because if it is then I might give it to my pets too!

Yup, pets love it. They can actually digest it (in small portions) unlike humans, who must juice it to get the good stuff out!
