Default Have you ever lost a permanent tooth?

My son (he's 12) lost a tooth today that he swears is a permanent tooth. I know I should know but he's only got a couple left to loose and I can't keep up with which one's are not permanent anymore. It's the 2nd one from his front tooth. It looks really small to me compared to the rest of his teeth (the one's that I know are perms) and compared to the same tooth in my mouth. I would compare it to the one on the other side but he just lost that one a couple weeks ago.

The tooth looks healthy. He's never had a cavity. I still think it's a baby tooth but he says he lost that one and this one was growing back, which is why he believes it's small. Has anyone ever heard of just loosing a permanent tooth when there are no apparent problems and it didn't get knocked out? He said it's been loose for about a week

sounds to me like it was a baby tooth..cause he lost the other one a few weeks ago and it's been loose for awhile, and cause it was smaller than the rest....

yeah I just looked it up. It is the canine tooth. My kids were late bloomers when it came to getting teeth in, as well as losing them. Just like I was lol. None of us got our first tooth until we were over a year old. The dentist has always gave the impression that it's a good thing. I've got it in a bag. I guess I'll drive by the dentist tomorrow and let him look at it. My husband thinks it's a baby tooth too, since there's no root and no reason for it to have just come out. I've just never heard of one getting loose and falling out for no reason and I was freakin out a bit.

^^Wow! How old is your daughter? My son's begging for braces already but the dentist said it'll be a couple more years before he looses all his teeth.

Army, there is no root. There's only a tiny speck of blood on the inside.

No root means it's a baby tooth. A permanent would have a root even if it was just coming in.

He may be right about having already lost it. Canines are the most common tooth to have in multiples. Some people have multiple babies and adults.

I know this because I had 2 sets of each on both sides and ask my orthodontist a million questions.

I just looked in her mouth. Im incorrect. She just lost her lower canines - still has her baby uppers.

Her orthodontist said once her canines are gone she can get her braces. Maybe your dentist wants the primary molars gone too? All I know is she is not in love with the idea of braces. Actually - she despises that Im making her get them but I have horrible teeth and wish my mom got them for me. One of those living vicariously through your children.

    Here ya go

He (and her) seem to be right on track. I have no idea why my ortho said she was losing earlier than normal? She seems to be losing as she should. Maybe he means when you look at the xrays her teeth are lower than they should be? (Theres a photo of that on that site, scroll down) I dont get why your ortho says 2 more years. You may want to ask. Teeth are typically in their places around 12 years old.

PLEASE get your son those braces. I'm so ashamed my mother never did because the doctor told her those same things about me being late and stuff... and then she just put it off so far now I'm embarassed to smile.

Ok that makes me feel a lot better! That would make a lot more sense to him if it was a multiple baby. It's good to know that a permanent would have a root even if it was brand new...this one definately did not.

How much did it cost to have them implanted? I'm pretty sure everything's ok after reading everone else's responses, but I'm still planning on worst case.

He said something about the back molars and supposedly if they came in after his braces were taken off then we'd have to go through it all over again. He did put in a bracket behind his upper teeth a couple years ago. It's supposed to help space them while we're waiting on braces. They adjust it every 6 months.

Thanks for the info...I know nothing about teeth!

Awww that is terrible You shouldn't be afraid to smile. You can still get braces! I didn't get them until I was 18. I financed mine as well...no having to come up with a big chunk of money.

I'm definately getting braces for him. That's why we've been going back and forth with the dentist. He thinks we should wait a couple more years, but G wants them yesterday lol.

^^^Why not pay for Invisilign, its $6,000 and veneers dont last forever and are $600 per tooth?

Continuing the off topic, some dentists prefer to wait until the child has stopped growing before doing braces which makes sense to me (-:

Upper permanent teeth develop fully, root and all, in the upper jaw then drop into place. In x-rays they may look smaller, but still have all their components, while they are developing.

Maybe the spacer is what the dentist said he'll put in soon? Hmmm... dangit - now I want to go call her orthodontist and find out whats going on. I need to call her dentist too... she needs work but got so freaked out they couldnt even clean her teeth. They want to put her asleep for the dental work but have to go through Kaiser and Kaiser is being a bunch of asses. I wish she would just sit there and let them do it!

Just a random fact: Baby teeth *do* have roots initially; the roots just dissolve. That's what makes them get loose and clear the path for the permanents. :-) I found this out when I had one pulled early for some reason (maybe it was stuck and the ones around it had all fallen out?) as a kid -- leaving it in the little tooth fairy box it had this gigantanormous root.

When I had my 3 teeth on one side pulled I paid cash. I had 3 pulled and bone grafts and it was $800. It'll be the same for the other side. The implants OTOH they want $3800 each... Im getting those in Costa Rica since Ill need 6. But thats not for a few years since Ill have braces and jaw surgery in the meantime.
