    Default Fuck me-overdraft fees

I had to make an emergency trip home this past week to see my dad (just got sick.)

While I was there I had no way to monitor my bank account, and my account eventually dipped negative and I got slapped with the heinous BofA overdraft fees- almost $200 of them. I just realized this and I'm freaking out a little. I haven't had this happen in almost a year.

Should I speak to someone at the bank about this, or just let it go? I'm going to work tomorrow and should have at least a $500 deposit for them tomorrow afternoon.

It can't hurt to ask. I use BofA and they've reversed a couple of overdraft fees in the past. I now check my accounts online daily because it has me paranoid. Is your dad going to be okay?

yeah call them and ask for a supervisor. Tell them that you had an emergency and made a mistake in your checcking register resulting in the overdrafts. tell them you never let that happen, it's just this one mistake. they can see yoru not habitual in overdrafting and will reverse some of them. probably not all of them, but they will give you a "curtesy refund"
we are with B of A and they have done this for us several times...

try and get it reduced. they have a lot of leeway on that stuff. I used to use B of A for my business account and they would waive all kinds of things for my employees without much of a hassle.

Definitely call! I've had my bank waive fees just because I called. They want your business.

Definately call and ask to speak with YOUR BRANCH's manager. Explain your situation. I did through through my bank just the other day. My overdraft fees went to like $234. She took $109 off!

    Times have changed.

I wouldn't call I would go to the branch in person and sit down with the branch manager and discuss what happened.

With the current economic situation banks are less likely to return fees as they have in the past. If someone calls our branch we are to tell them that unless it is a bank error we will not return the fees. But if someone comes in the manager may give back half the fees.

    Good Luck!

I would call and if they sound hesitant I would cry. Crying totally works for like everything. Seriously, I don't really fake cry-they are real tears and emotions but from my experience, I have never not got what i wanted when I cry.

It's been my experience that when you go in and talk to somebody if you have a TON of fees, they drop like half.....It's worth going in , I mean the worst they can say is no right?

Those fees are bullshit. I just overdrew my account by 4 dollars and got a 35 dollar fee...Yeah, that's logical!! Then again I should stop using my card for every little purchase and just use cash....

You really should go in and have a go for a reduction.

I don't know about the US - but banking is banking - in the UK there has been an ongoing investigation into bank fees for several years. There are even a couple of court cases pending which could set precedents for tens of millions of pounds in refunds.

What has come out is that for the average UK bounced cheque fee of £30 (+/- $60) the bank actually incurs a cost of just over £1. Those are nice margins!! Unsurprisingly, people find that a little unfair.

So there is almost certainly some room for manouvre.

Overdraft fees are evil. Maybe link your savings account with your checking account so that doesn't happen again.

If you can, investigate using a credit union as your primary checking account. Mine has an overdraft fee of $3.

And also, you might want to make sure to balance your checkbook/use quicken or something to keep track... a lot of times, esp. if you write rent or utility checks, you can go 2 weeks assuming something's been cashed & then it sucks when it is!

I used to work for BofA. You can explain the situation to a rep. They have been known to refund ODF's, it's usually based on your account history- how long you've had you're account, past OD's and average account balance. If you have a savings account with them look into having it set up as OD protection.

what ended up happening with this? I've had my bank waive them before. I've had the most success just calling my bank's 800#. Overall they're pretty understanding, but I've had some doozies and I've paid a LOT of overdraft fees in my lifetime.

overdraft fees are the worst. I wish I would've known that I could've called and somehow gotten them waived. sounds like a good idea and worth a try..
when i first opened a checking account I was careless with my card and because of overdraft fees i found my account almost 300 dollars negative. I was freaking out and had to make that call to mommy for some financial help.lol.

but I learned my lesson. I started using the book that came with my checks and I every time my card gets swiped I write down the amount. Then at the end of the day I do the math and make sure my account stays balanced.
good luck and let us know how it works out.

They "ate" half. But I'm pissed b/c I just found out that the alert I had set (to alert me when I'm under $200) NEVER emailed me.
    Ugh.

Seriously, this is a great thing to do. I've started keeping all my receipts and recording them every day on my leger software. I used to just write it out in my checkbook when I first started. I'd say I find an inaccuracy in my record keeping & Theirs about 3x a month. Usually it's small, less than a dollar, but a couple months ago I found one for over $20 (called and got it refunded). I even found an extra swipe on my card for $.50 from Taco Bell... I called the 1-800 number and got a coupon for a free menu item.

if its the first time usually they will waive a lot of fees. i am currently having the same problem with my account but its more becuz of this retarded automatic bill pay stuff that alot of companies require you to do now. i swear i wish i could just use cash for everything and have it in a safe. overdraft fees and late charges on your credit card hurt worse than getting kicked in the groin........

you can always pay for everything with money orders if income is unreliable or it's hard for you to keep track of a bank account.

The trick to getting fees waived is to be very polite, kind and understanding. Even if it's not a first time, they'll still do it every so often. Not always. But if you kill em with kindness, you're golden.
