    Default Living situations

I'm going to view an apartment tomorrow and I prefer not to live near children. Love them but don't want to live near them. I've heard enough loud children and adults (2 children and 2-3 adults) living in the one bedroom next door to me for a lifetime. Don't want to hear toys, crying, whining, tantrums, pitter patter etc.

Is there a legal way to find out if there are children living in the complex? Found out that's it's illegal to ask the owner what kind of people live in the complex. I'm only looking at small complexes with 12 units or less. So, the amount of children or anything else loud is crucial.

when you go check out the apartments ask if its child friendly and if there are children around and say it in a positive way, or you could just ask who the neighbors are.

You can ask whether there are many new/young families in the area. There's nothing wrong with that.

no matter what, peoples leases end at all times throughout the year. your neighbor on one side could move out after a week and a family with kids could move in. and then the neighbor on the other side could move in 6 months. you know?

no matter what theres always the chance you will have kids around bc you never know when other peoples leases are up and who will come next.

a way to tell about the here and now though is go by around the time schools get out. find out about the elem school near there and watch for a bus.

I am with ya on that one. One time a few years ago, me and my ex had a problem with this living in Atlanta.
When we were aptartment hunting, we would actually walk around the property, walk through the breezeways and stuff, and look for things like toys on the patios, stickers on windows, ya know....signs that there are children present.
We'd also listen for the crying and screaming too as we were walking by the doors.
I mean don't get me wrong, we weren't peering in peoples windows or putting our ears to their doors, just "touring" the property, casually observing.

It saved our asses more than once. We found a place we loved, were pretty much ready to move in, one step from siging on the dotted line.....and asked the office lady if we could go peep the apartment she wanted to put us in. So we go to look, and in the apartment above us, must have been about 5 kids on the patio.....the door was open and we could hear more crying from inside, loud yelling in a foreign language, loud music that sounded like Barney or something, and the smell of something cooking that was not pleasant.
We went back and politely told her we were going to move on to another property.

You can ask the landlord/manager whatever you want, legally. Whatever they answer is what makes the q&a illegal or not. I myself have a 3 year old, so I prefer to live in a place that is of course child friendly... it works both ways. I don't need uptight neighbors with a stick up their ass when my son is acting like a 3 year old boy. It's also nice to have other children around for playdates & whatnot...

But, what I'm getting at is, a landlord or manager can say without to much repercussion if their community is "child friendly" or "family oriented" but those are pretty much illegal terms when advertising or describing properties formally. (fair housing, etc.)

Your best bet is too look around the properties you visit, it's summer, the children are bound to be outside, if not them, their evidence, (toys, bikes, playground, etc.)

I always ask if it's a family oriented community.
Or Is it a quiet neighborhood here?

I just love parents like you who are full of judgement for anyone who doesn't want to hear a three ring circus 24hrs a day. Using your home for rest and relaxation after an ass-kicking week of work is soooo very uptight.

I think that the point of this thread is to find ways so that people can communicate in order to have the living situations they want.

But I also strongly agree with this.

Like I said, Tiger, tour the property. Look for yourself. Some places will tell you anything to get you to rent there.

I was a sucker for that line when I moved in this place. Safe...totally. Clean...Yeup.

HUUUUUGE massively ignored plumbing problem....oh forgot to mention that to me.
Poo in my tub and bathroom sink I tells ya. POOP. REAL HUMAN POOP and grass bits mixed with mud.

Also, does anyone know if they are required to tell you about any structural or plumbing problems before you move in in CA?

unless you sign something that waives their requirement to fix it for you, aren't THEY supposed to fix anything that isn't directly your fault?? as far as I know, regardless of what they tell you up front, any pre-existing condition or malfunctioning plumbing problem that isn't caused by you flushing/putting something down there you weren't supposed to is thEIr problem.

Oh, I did not mean you! Actually that picture freaked me out too, I haven't seen the Witches in years. I think I've reread the book more recently than I have seen the film.

TM, it might be worth bringing a camera with you to the viewing. If you like the apt. but see anything iffy now, photograph it in order to document its existence. It'll light a fire under their butts to get things repaired (if apparent).

I would suggest maybe dropping by during playtime hours on the weekend to see the noise level. Yanno, like 3-6 pm, anywhere during that time would probably give you at least some idea about the # of kids but it might be more effort than it's worth. :\

I've heard that's been tried and it's illegal because if landlords had a choice they would never rent to people with kids.
