I've mentioned in other threads that I work full-time as a web designer for a major corporation, and said company is awesome enough to have a flexible work environment, so I work from home most days. I wasn't really looking for a second job, but extra cash is always nice. I was on another board and there was this huge 250-page thread on being a ChaCha guide.
I read into it, and essentially ChaCha is a free service for mobiles (and the web, but mostly mobile users use it) where you can text and ask any question, from 411 info to "How big is the average penis?" and someone will answer you. As a guide, you answer these questions and get paid 20 cents a question.
I was like, shit, sign me up. Someone in the thread gave me a referral and I took the tests. There are four tests--searching, typing and reasoning, plus the simulator test where you answer questions just like they were live. It takes about one business day for your application to be received and to receive the invitation to take the tests, and another full business day (or so) for your test scores to be reviewed and for you to be approved as a guide. I was approved to be a guide yesterday and I've been answering questions for a few hours a day since then.
Aside from answering questions, you can refer up to 20 people to be on your team. For each person you refer, you earn 10% of their earnings--which is not taken out of their cut, but added to yours as a bonus. (I like that--nobody loses by having someone refer them.) I haven't referred anybody yet, because I want to see for myself whether they're reliable in terms of payment.
So far, it seems legit and I've made $105 in the last two days. (My goal is $50 a day for this month.) Payment is made either via direct deposit every 15th of the month, or you can sign up for a debit card to have access to your earnings any time. You sign up as a 1099 independent contractor and fill out a W-9 form. The real test will be when I finally get the debit card and actually draw out my earnings.
Will I get rich off this? No. I think I average about $9 an hour, and I've put in several hours a day, though I'm sure I'll get faster as time goes by. On the other hand, that's $9 an hour more than my already decent salary at my full-time job, and I don't have to actually go anywhere to do it. In fact, I can do it at the same time I do my regular job, which is really nice.
I was thinking earlier in the week that now that I bought a new car, I'm going to have to put off buying a house until I pay it off. Well, with this part-time gig, I can accomplish that a lot more quickly, that's for sure. I'm pretty excited about it.
I'll report more once I receive the debit card and actually withdraw cash, and see how that goes. That'll be the real test.
