Default anxiety at work...how to prevent?? Xanax?

I get so anxious before work and when im there. I can't take it anymore.
Another dancer mentioned that she takes a Xanax before work so she isn't anxious.

Do any of u do this?

    Would it make u drowsy?

I couldnt take a valium before work coz I'd fall asleep.

I had a really bad problem with stage fright for a while and I told my naturopath and she prescribed me Xanax. I only took .25mg and it didn't make me feel drowsy or intoxicated at all, just took away all the stupid fears and anxieties. I was amazed at how I felt without all the extra stupid shit going on in my head! I only used it while I was dancing and for about a month. Careful though, it can be highly addictive!

Also can u take Xanax along with an SSRI. I take 150mg of Luvox every night. It helps with anxiety but as I've been on it for about 10 years I find it's helping less and less and it doesn't help with panic attacks.

You might be able to take something to calm your nerves, but I thought you danced just for fun? Why do it when it makes you anxious enough your considering taking something to calm you down to do it?

Lol yes actually. She was kind of a quack though. I probably shouldn't have mentioned her. She was quick with prescriptions and always consulting her books, never seemed to have any answers of her own. But the Xanax worked for me, regardless.

It would be a good idea to talk to your doctor about it.

I am on anti-depressant sometimes I feel like ti does not work, but it really does becuase I get less anxiety symtoms.

I am on celexa. for about 4 months now.

There is many different ones out there , some may work better for one person then another.

^ I wouldn't call her a naturopath, and I wouldn't consider her very trained or certified if she was constantly looking things up in books.

A couple natural things I use for my (what i consider to be ) extreme anxiety that occurs when I'm driving, in public crowded places (like malls, department stores, walmart, etc) and occasionally at work are:

-very strong kava kava tea, or kava kava in capsule form
-rescue remedy tincture, spray or lozenges
-lavender oil, spray it in my car, put it on my wrists and sniff
-meditating and deep breathing- I know everyone says that, but until you actually try it before you go in to work, don't discredit it.

rescue remedy is the most fast-acting and low-maintenance (take it and get on with your life) method for anxiety management. You can find it at a health food store. It's plant essences in a tincture. It comes in a dropper bottle and you put it on your tongue, a spray, or lozenge candy things. I used to think that the only reason it worked is because it was 27% alcohol and it would make me feel all woozy and chill, but then I got the lozenge/candy kind and it made me feel the same way- with no alcohol. So it really does work. For me, it makes everything slower and less intense, it helps me breath normally and not hyperventilate and feel like I'm going to faint. I love it. I'm always scared when I take the tincture and I'm driving though, because it's alchol, and if i got pulled over and took a breathalyzer it would probably come up positive.

I have never tried Xanax or Ativan or any of the anti-anxiety medications, but if you really want to manage and get rid of your anxiety- you need to face it head one. Using natural remedies isn't masking your anxiety or numbing it, it makes it easier to deal with, and eventually you wont need to use them. Taking medications will make you dependent. With natural remedies, you still feel like yourself, only a little calmer. You can still feel that there is anxiety occuring in your body, but it's muted and you kind of just don't care- at least that's how it is for me. For example, two weeks ago I had driving anxiety so bad I wouldn't even go in the car. I started taking RR when I went out and gradually went from side roads, to main roads, and now almost the highway. Sometimes I forget to take it and i'm still fine.

agreed. dont get stuck on the med go round if you dont have to try other things first. also dont discount the fact that maybe dancing might not be for you.

If she gets anxiety at places other than work, it's not that dancing isn't for her, that's just how her body reacts in crowded, loud, overstimulating places that her body perceives as high-pressure and adrenaline inducing.

Jaizaine- if it makes you feel any better, I read somewhere that most anxiety attacks and general feelings of intense anxiety can only last a maximum of 20 minutes, because after that time period your adrenaline stores in your body are depleted and it takes hours to create more. So, when you start feeling anxious at work, maybe go take a 15 minute break in the back, and then go back out and see how you feel. I tested this theory while driving, and sure enough, around the 22-23rd minute of feeling extremely panicky, it started to ease up. Might just be a placebo effect, but the theory seems pretty sound.

Your right the 20 minutes thing does, my pills help with the depression more then anxiety, but when I go into attack mode. I basically walk around until I feel calm.

I get anxiety before I do a movie shoot, and photo shoots, and sometimes when I am booked for a call for escorting.

Sometimes a hot bath works but not always if i am not able to get one. so I just drink lots of water til I feel better, and it helps to have some classical or jazz music on my ipod.

As someone who was addicted to Xanax (was prescribed for anxiety, but eventually couldn't fall asleep without it) I think you should stay far, far away. It is VERY addicting. I started out only taking a quarter, until that no longer worked... And so on...

why don't you try something natural, like tea.

I think needing to take med to do a job should make a person reevaluate things.

Is it the club, the regs, management? Should you switch clubs or do private parties instead? Maybe a a vacations or work less days?

I can't tell you all how pleased I am to see this topic going the way it is right now.

Over the many months I have been a member here I have seen sooooo many posts telling fellow dancers to just take this pill or that pill to solve their problems. Posts about how to get pills, use pills, mix pills, etc. etc.

I get that some people DO need their meds and that's fine but pills really aren't the ONLY answer for everyone and it's quite refreshing to see that being reflected for a change.

Good job and I hope this new trend will stick around!

do you have anxiety or depression issues for which you are medicated for or take treatment for? im curious becuase you always chime in, but never give personal experiances.

Yes, I have battled BDD and mild Aagoraphobia since my teens. As an adult I have often used stripping as a form of aversion therapy, with great sucess

I was put on meds in my teens but couldn't afford them after being on my own so I had to face my personal demons on my own ( even considered suicide at 19) and it wasn't until that happened that my healing really began.

I have found it extreemly empowering to have been able to overcome my issues without a chemical crutch and I feel very strongly that the no meds way is worth giving a try prior to chemical ways. That is why I chime in on these subjects when I notice them.

I have this same problem too but someone here said that you can't take xanax just for work though.. I don't see why not.

Anxiety is a bitch to get rid of it..

Opps, I meant to say exposure therapy not aversion therapy. For some odd reason I am always confusing those two terms up

I think I mix up the two terms because of dealing with an aversion to being judged in public and having used stripping as a way to overcome that aversion. But anyway I think people will get what I meant anyway, I just wanted to clarify just in case.

Yes xanax will rid you of anxiety.
But you build up a tolerance very fast and you keep needing more and more of it, for it to have the desired effect.

I would say if you only are going to use it occasionally then you should be ok.

I have a friend who started used xanax in high school on weekends just for fun. Ok i admit it, i did too. But i eventually grew out of the habit after we were done high school.... sadly its been 9 years since we have graduated and she STILL pops her pills every day. Shes tried to go off them a few times but she cant.
Shes lost her job, her boyfriend.. And i barely talk to her anymore cause she talks soooo slow now and she never rememebers anything anymore.
Her family and all of her friends have tried to help her but ..anyways thats another story. Im just saying its really easy to get addicted to them, and a bitch to wean off of!

i already pmed jaizaine about this thread but i just wanted to respond to this. each person will build up a tolerance differently. and xanax is unpredictable. you may take a whole pill and it won't work on monday. on wednesday, you could take a half and be cross eyed. a week later, you could take a whole pill and it will give you the desired effect. i know this both from personal experience and from others saying the same thing has happened to them.

personally, i take a half mg anywhere from 1-4 times a week (for the last 5 months) and my tolerance is just unpredictable. it hasnt gone up though. (with the exception of right now bc i was taking valium. and when i say on a monday it might not work, i dont take another in that case.)

i have the same reaction with xanax. sometimes, a quarter of a bar will knock me out for 13 hours and i wake up with extreme xanax hangover. sometimes i can pop two and ride the happy xanax train of love for hours but not fall asleep.

i had better results with ativan, a similar drug to xanax but i've always found my reaction to it to be consistent.
