Default Does working at a stripclub ruin your chances of getting other jobs?

    Hey guys,

I recently started working as a SC DJ like 2 weeks ago, doing dayshifts. As you guys know, the job market has been slow, and it was either this or working in a furniture store or insurance (two things I didn't want to spend my summer doing). I just moved into this city, and don't really have many job contacts.

I didn't know if taking this job will hurt my chances of getting other jobs in the future? When you get a new job and they do a background check on you, I know that they see everywhere you have gotten W2's from, no?

I want to try out teaching eventually (probably starting as a substitute first). Will this job hurt my chances of ever becoming a teacher (or any other job, for that matter)?

Should I quit right now if it will?

The DJing is just a fun summer job for me. I'm only 22, and just graduated university/moved to a new city. I am unsure what I want to do in the future, but I thought teaching could be one option.

    Thank you,

    Peanutbutter1234

you're a DJ? I wouldn't sweat it. The stigma exists for dancers. Nobody judges DJs that way, except maybe your parents or girlfriend.

Day shift though? How is that working out? you might be better off selling furniture, esp if this is a summer gig.

It hasn't affected me... but I worked at a club who used a different business name on paper than the actual club name.

Yeah I know...you have to get your start somewhere with this stuff though. I would make more selling furniture; I just didn't want to be completely bored out of my mind for the rest of my life (the furniture job was like a career move). I'm only 22! I still need to try new things out.

Its been true though; its been extremely slow during the day this past week. After the first of the month everything got realllllllyyyyy slow. I might have to leave just for this reason.

I tried out at another busier club though; I find out today if I get the job or not.

Even a W2 just says the name of your employer, not what you actually did or who the employer is.
I've worked with children and for the local government, both jobs required background checks and neither time did it even come up that I have danced. You're fine, especially since you're just DJing. If it ever comes up, just say it's a bar and leave it at that. No one ever asks questions of a 22 year old who worked in a bar for the summer.

    ^ Yep... you'll be fine.

Please help the girls in the club make money by encouraging tipping / buying dances and speak very clearly ( a little slower than usual talking ). I just worked with a dj that did NOTHING to encourage tipping and you could barely understand him ( at all ! ) . This is stuff you probably know already though.

I agree that working as the DJ has much less stigma attached to it so I wouldn't worry about it. You might want to ask some of our resident DJ's though as I bet they could better advise on this matter than we dancers.

In a place like Las Vegas, working in a SC has no affect on landing a regular job. If anything, some potential employers are very curious to know what working in a sc is like. A lot of dancers go on to cocktail in casinos.

My friend, who already at 22 owns a million-dollar business and works for a top firm, said that employers would probably find it fascinating. I guess its all in how you frame it; if you're all nervous and weird about doing it, then the company will be nervous and weird about hiring you.

Thanks for the help guys! I think you're right in that the DJing job has less stigma (not that stripping should have a stigma; it definitely shouldn't).

I try to speak slowly and clearly. I encourage tipping all the time! It has just been a sloooowwww week at the club.

I was pulling about 65-90 bucks a shift for the dayshift at first, and the other day I made $45. I think like 5 people came in the whole time .

I might have to leave the industry just for this! (also the fact that there are no benefits)

    Ok, an update guys...

I worked at the stripclub for like 2.5 or 3 months part time as a DJ. They did take out Social Security and everything from my checks.

On the checks I received, they used the name of their holding company instead of the stripclub name. I just asked them to send me my W2.

So I'm going to file taxes on this money, as well as the money allocated out for tips. (I think thats how its done right? A certain amount was taken out each time for tips)

Will this come back to haunt me? I'm obviously not going to list this on my resume.

I'm going to grad school soon for accounting, and will probably work in the financial sector, probably for an accounting firm or doing accounting work for a company.

The people I asked about this (a lawyer who used to do HR stuff, and someone who works in HR for a big company) said that most background checks don't even look at your taxes, and it shouldn't even come up.

People on here though have said that people at banks and other financial jobs will look at your tax returns.

I could just say I did some music work for a company right? Since its just going to list the holding company, and not anything else. Does it come up with how long you worked there for, if you got several checks from them?

I'm just worried that I could have potentially messed up my future by working as a DJ part time for a little bit...I'm 23, and I really needed the money at the time, and it was one of the only jobs I could find that paid well enough and didn't have tons of hours (so I could spend more time looking for other work). It was so hard to find anything even with an undergrad degree, so thats why I'm going back to school to get some more marketable skills.

    Thank you!

Don't worry about it. You are male, therefore seen as "making ends meet" in a tough employment market. I know plenty of male strippers and I know one works as a commercial airline pilot. Really, it isn't problem for men.

For women, however, if they even hint at having a stripping career they might as well write "served prison time for a felony offense" on an application.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

Yeah, I really would not sweat this. I think you are getting overly anxious about it. Even IF a potential employer does a background check, and IF it includes your taxes, you did say that your W-2 doesn't have the strip club name, right? So how would they know unless you told them? And even if you did, DJing is a lot less stigmatizing than stripping.

Seriously, I think most male employers would high-five you to get paid to look at naked chicks all day.

Thanks for your support guys. I think you're probably right.

The only reason why I started worrying is because someone on here mentioned that if you apply for a job at a bank (and I'm not sure about other financial institutions like accounting firms), they will do an extensive background check on you. Since I'm going into accounting and probably work for an accounting firm, I'm worried that this will come up a lot.

Can anyone confirm or not confirm this?

What jobs do they look at your W2's for?

    Thank you.

as long as you didnt do anything illegal, paid your taxes, you're good to go....background checks vary according to what kind of bank job, and you could actually have a harder time getting hired for having a loooong history of bouncing checks, overdrawing, unpaid taxes, etc....i work for a bank in processing services...you shouldnt have any problem....

If you do not fill out a release specific to the IRS, they will not release your tax returns. Thus, no one can see them if you don't authorize it. Don't sweat the tax returns.

    See above.

Resumes mean nothing unless you lie on them. Then, they are a convenient excuse to fire you. I almost never read a resume from a job applicant beyond their education and training. If an applicant wastes a lot of my time with long job descriptions and long lists of accomplishments, I throw the resume in the "thanks but no thanks" pile and move on. What I want to know from a resume is what training you have and what your credentials are. I know I have to train you to work for me. But, I need to know if you are trainable. It's nice to see a long string of accomplishments, but that just means you're padding your resume, or you are overqualified for the jobs I have to offer.
