    Default Maybe TMI- Long distance running W/O barfing?

    I've been running a mile or more on the treadmill at the gym..I'm proud of myself and want to run longer....But I start to throw up. Will this go away over time? Should I time my running for mornings before I eat?

    (I know I shouldn't run long distances since I dance & my legs get enough workout, but I'm trying to slim my figure down & figure running is a good way to get lithe.)

    Woah that sounds a little weird to me. Here call these people they know everything I heart them. Nurse online: 262 544 2745. Free nurses 24 hours a day.

    I run too about two miles at a crack now...used to run way more like 5 a day (was dancing at the time too) and I've never had the urge to wretch. Do you have heartburn or acid reflux by chance?

    I have a sensitve stomach & have been stressed out lately...Could be it. Someone else said I was just otu of shape (in runner's terms) and it would stop eventually. I just don't want to have an icky embarrassing event on the treadmill.

    It would be my guess that it is not out of shapeness, or you would be out of breath and wheezy and stuff not barfy. The only thing I can think of is I have acid reflux (should start taking prilosec again) and sometimes if I even start walking around or doing something physical when I have heartburn the acid goes higher up in my throat and makes me want to gag...UGH.

    I had that problem when I ran track in highschool. It's not uncommon. You might want to switch to outside running if you are actually throwing up instead of just feeling like you will (so people won't see you). It will go away in time, most likely. Well, or you'll eventually get the feeling after two miles instead of one. Just don't drink too much water (sip, don't chug) and keep walking afterwards to cool down instead of just stopping.

    Perfectly normal when your body is not used to running. I think it's from the adrenilin. It will go away as u get used to it. Just give yourself time to get used to the exercise before trying to run too far.

    Running is an excellent way to loose weight and dont worry it wont bulk up your leg muscles even more if that's what u meant. Running long distances builds lean muscle.

    dont run after u eat.

    as for whether to do it first thing in the mmorning before eating. this is a great way to burn fat rather than energy and by all means do it if u can. i personally cant run on empty coz i just dont have enough energy. but if u can thats good.

    ETA: If u add a little lime to your water that can help with nausea. I use it sometimes when I train and have a bit of a sensitive stomach that day.

    Odd, I've never had that. But I have heard of people that do.
    I also never run unless it's been at least an hour after eating. You'll get best results if you wake up, drink 32 oz of water and hit the treadmill/road before you eat. Then have something filled with healthy carbs post work out.
    You'll also notice slimming if you build a little more muscle, as muscle helps burn fat while you're at rest too!

    That does happen if you're a little out of shape. I think the idea is to push yourself as far as you can go WITHOUT feeling like you'll puke. Your stamina will increase as you go.

    I try not to eat three hours before a run. I have a sensitive stomach too.

    I have a plastic baggie crunched up in my hand while at the gym or hanging off the equipment I'm using. I've seen chunks on the floor, and I really want to avoid that. If it's happening, might as well be prepared to make it minimally icky.

    A buddy of mine ran all through school (played football as well as being involved in track)....

    He always puked. Like every time he ran over 4 miles.

    *shrug* I just know it isn't that weird and it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad. Well other than you might just be prone to yarking after you run.
