"We're calling on the rest of the nation to follow suit and make a statement that we will not accept these subtle forms of discrimination," said Good, 48.
LMAO, aren't there more pressing problems to worry about????

I know right?!

It may be politically correct thinking, but the key part to me is the 'correct' part. It is unfair to the women working, and the women viewing the signs. There'll be the awkward transition time, with lots of huffing and puffing, and then it'll fade from our memories that there was ever a problem with those signs.
No signs like that around here. They read, "Road Work Ahead." Haven't seen a "Men Working" sign in years.
Hmm...this is supposed to be a super conservative state.
^^I was thinking the same thing, like how 1970's are those signs?
Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!
In any case... lame...

Atlanta is cutting jobs from the police force and closing down fire stations because it is low on money, but it has money for stupid new signs? That the government for you.
I dunno. The signs are incorrect, outdated and, yes, sexist. What exactly is the problem with replacing them? Since we have bigger things to worry about and all?
I have taught that the sky in all its zones is mortal and its substance was formed by a process of birth

Gee, here's a big surprise. Sexist signs in the south? Who woulda' thunk it!
I haven't seen a sign that said "Men at Work" anywhere in years and I travel all over the country. It's time for them to be replaced. It was time a long time ago.

I met a strange lady...she made me nervous.
She took me in and gave me breakfast.

"See, believe it or not (and I don't care whether you do), it's never been about the sex. I get sex at home, anytime, and we like it, and it's good for both of us. No, my stripclub experience has been about acceptance, and affirmation, and desirability...There have been some women who have a personality that just clicks with mine, and in the faux-sex atmosphere of the club, it's a mix that is completely seductive." - Jay Zeno
One argument is that a state should prioritize and replace them as they need to be replaced, spending money on higher priorities first, particularly poor states.
The other argument is that this is relatively high priority to remove sexism from the work place due the immediate and long term impact on society. Plus the cost to replace the signs is relatively small, and the work will feed back into the economy anyway (well I hope that American workers will be the ones to receive the money for the new signs).
I don't have a strong opinion either way. Personally I'd say replace them but if the state is in an financial budget crisis that is easily said, and not so easily done.

Haha, it's probably right at the top of the priority list now with the magazine editor hot on the local official's asses. I mean, I'm hearing about it here in bumblefuck Canada...the poor buggers there in city hall will be putting their hearts and souls into making this story go away.
Heck, they could take donations, one sign at a time. "This sign sponsored by Stripperweb."
It's only the top news story until tomorrow, when something juicier comes along![]()
Wasn't there a big outcry about manholes (the sewer kind) a couple years back?? C'mon already..

This one is about a guy calling out terms like blackballed, black sheep of the family and black hole as racist..
There's just more important things to worry about in this world than WORDS..

Because we all see lots of construction chicks out there on the roads...
And this is supposed to rectify an ostensible bias in the workplace?
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

In theory there is no problem in replacing the signs. At this time, however, Atlanta does not have the money to keep its police and fire departments fully staffed. Are police and fire services not more important than construction signs?

Anyway, to be accurate, the new signs should say "People Leaning on Shovels Ahead"
That, or the government could just officially declare that "humen" is a perfectly acceptable spelling for the word "human", and then a can of spray paint, a stencil for of the letters "H" and "U", and a few minutes of work could solve this problem.
"HUMEN AT WORK" or "HUMEN WORKING AHEAD"
Okay, sure it's hackey. But desperate times call for desperate measures and all that.

It doesn't matter at this point. Every dollar they spend on signs is a dollar they don't have for police and fire protection. Atlanta is scraping for money.

ATLANTA (MyFOX Atlanta) -- Residents of the Summerhill community are rallying Saturday because they want answers about the recent cutbacks in the fire department.
Residents in the community said they are question the department's response time after a massive blaze destroyed three homes in the neighborhood Friday morning.
One of the homes destroyed is owned by community activist Mattie Jackson, 86. She has lived in the community for over 60 years. She also carried the Olympic Torch in the 1996 Atlanta games.
Investigators with the Atlanta Fire Department said the fire was caused y arson in a house that was under construction on Ormond Street SE at Connelly Street in the Summerhill community.

We have a lot of highway construction going on in this area of Ohio. I assume it is federally funded as it involves I-75. All the signs I have seen recently refer to a generic "Worker" being present with some occasional signs having symbols only (I don't look close enough to see if the symbols allude to gender).
I believe most would would agree (at least those who actually pay taxes) that it would be silly and wasteful of our tax dollars to immediately and in a wholesale manner replace signs just to appease those who are easily offended by...well...most everything. Having said that, as orders need to be issued for replacement signs due to wear and tear, maybe we could dispense with symbols that are gender specific and just make the pictogram an early embryo with a hardhat.

Once again I have embraced my addiction and have put off the moral dilemma to another day.
The romantic in me would like to believe there was a time long ago when people really cared so much that they might even go out and fund raise on their own time to get it done, but I think that is just evidence I'm getting old, and want to remember a better past.
Still, it's hard to imagine that anyone cares enough about this to actually go out and there and fund raise to get it done today. We care of course, but only up to the point that we can care from our armchairs.
