    Default U.K. Stripperweb people

I'm a U.K. citizen by descent (oddly enough I was about to say a U.K. stripperwebber by descent); anyone know if I need to do anything to be eligible to work? Like can I just apply for a Social Insurance Number (or whatever variation exists there) and apply for a job?

Damn you. Canadian and British? You won the citizenship jackpot!

Sorry this post is of no help whatsoever, I'm just envious.

^ Ha yea. I have US and UK (and african) citizenship and it makes work and travel a lot easier, I tell ya.

Jenny you would need to apply for a National Insurance Number (NI). This is the official website with details on how to obtain one. http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/ni_number.asp

Now when you say that you have citizenship by descent, I assume you mean through your parents? I only ask because back in 1982, the law was changed in regards to children gaining UK citizenship through their parents. The immigration process in which one would have to go through is a lot more complex now.

Thanks - I'm applying to a company that does work in London and I want to be able to tell them that I'm work-ready.
I was born... before 1982, and my parents were married and both citizens of the U.K. It is, ironically, a lot easier to find information if you are a more problematic case.

Presuming that you actually have the passport already, you are eligible to work in any of the EU countries. That isn't actually quite true, I think there is a problem with Brits going to Romania and Bulgaria for now. But otherwise...

In addition to that, with a little extra effort, the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Iceland and a couple of others are available too.

From what I can tell, the UK govt seems to give out National Insurance numbers like confetti to anyone these days.

Are you on the run from an African hell-hole and have no passport and no right to remain in the UK? Then come and work for the Home Office as a security guard on border patrol...

If you want to PM me with a few details about the industry and location - if there is anything unusual you are expecting - I'll be happy to make suggestions. As a general rule, the "time" in between leaving one residency and taking up another is a great opportunity to rearrange the paperwork to reduce taxes. Not that I'd know of course...

Thank you Stuart; I'm actually applying for the passport now; I need a bunch of long form birth certificates, and someone from the consul here told me I had to do an in person interview? Does that sound right or did I misunderstand that? I mean, there is an office in Toronto, so it is not so much trouble, just a little surprising.

    NP.

I just read the information on the site and it looks as if the application process has changed. Years back you weren't required to attend an interview, all you had to do was submit the application form along with the appropriate documents.

Thats right. About 2 years ago under "Tone" the govt introduced "Citizenship Tests" where each prospective citizen has to answer some questions about being British and then take a sort of pledge of allegiance. Not ever needing one I can't say I followed the story too closely.

I think you can buy books that prepare you for the test. I say that because though the questions should be general knowledge, lots of Brits don't know the answers...

We are - as I understand it - trying to follow the Australian model to try and curb the mass immigration that is flooding the UK. I don't understand it. It is bloody expensive, the weather sucks and the country is "going to the dogs" in my humble opinion.

If I were you, I'd get the passport and then check out the Med nations, the weather is MUCH better. And the cost of living is about half, or often less.

I also point out that I probably won't be available to welcome you to the UK when you arrive. It is a service that we British SWers offer to others on arrival. But I have been hellish busy of late. Apologies.

Dude, I haven't even been interviewed yet. Let's not leapfrog.

So for now you are forgiven.

That is only required of former residents with the right to remain and/or individuals born in the UK after december 1982; who are required to register before obtaining naturalisation.

Jenny won't need to take the test or pledge of allegiance.

Really? I thought it was being expanded under Gordon Brown. As I understood it, it is all a part of the gear up towards Identity cards and the easiest targets are being hit first to make the ID cards scheme more acceptable over time.

The govt has opened up some - and is in the process of opening up many more - centres where people will be interviewed (and I thought tested) before they get a 1st time passport. Then once they have "proved" the scheme works, it is being expanded to govt employees = people that can't say no!!

    I found this:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6370627.stm

Which seems to suggest that it is all being phased in. Though that does not necessarily help much.
