Default Oh god- super awkward moment in my near future

So, normally I'm not this socially paranoid, but for some reason this is truly wigging me out.

I have a friend (that I hook up with, I'm in an open relationship now) who lives in LA. When he comes to NY (which is every other month or so) we've tried to see each other. I met him at work. He's really awesome and I think I would completely fall in love with him if I weren't in a relationship already.

Anyways, he's in the city now, and he's invited me to the Billy Joel concert at Shea Stadium with a married couple he knows. Ok, so its like a double date. I can deal with this. I've met the guy, he's pretty nice.

    Whats the problem?

    My friend is turning 40. I'm 20.

He really is the coolest guy I've ever met, and if he didn't have that super hot George Clooney dark-brunette-hint-of-grey thing going in his hair, I wouldn't have believed him when he told me how old he is. He produces music videos and is just the coolest, most polite, nicest guy I've ever met.

His friends are his age. Tomorrow, the car service is picking me and the married couple up in Manhattan and taking us out to where the guy is. I am so freaked out about this car ride. The wife is supposedly the original friend of my guy's, and therefore pretty cool., but we all know how women can be. What if she's freaked out about how young I am?

And the concert- Billy Joel? He's unfortunately a little before my time and I'm not really a fan, which is going to highlight the age gap even more.

    God. Please, shoot me now!

Just act young and fabulous, because you are! I say if he is comfortable enough to invite you then I wouldn't sweat it. Have fun!

So first of all, if you think you could fall in love with another guy, and you're in a relationship, you may want to consider if you're with the right guy.

I wouldn't worry about the other female too much; if she hates you, it's probably because you're a lot prettier than her. That's the way females are. Being young is nothing to be ashamed of, for sure.

I would do just a little research on Billy Joel, just so you won't feel left out. I always feel weird when everyone else is singing along with the song and I'm just standing there, smiling awkwardly.

Sounds like a good time - have fun!

It doesn't matter to me or him...but I am assuming that a 40 year old women that wouldn't be threatened by me or feel weird hanging out with me would have to be pretty secure and cool.

I find older women are a bit more mature about that sort of thing.

Thats a big relief to me then. She seems cool, like "one of the guys", but this is the first time I've ever been "that girl" and I'm a little nervous.

I guess I should just act like nothing is different or wrong?

I'm married to someone twice my age, have been for three years, and haven't regretted it for an instant.

People are people, and sometimes someone's personality has nothing to do with their sex, gender, body, race or age.

Now, not everyone of the same age will have the same personality (sometimes in the same circle I have met forty-somethings who come off as twenty-somethings and others who come off as fifty-somethings!) but take each person at face value and just let things come as they may. :-) I've met people who were freaked out by how young I was until they got to know me.

Are you gonna act stupid? Get so drunk you can't walk and barf on her shoes?

If not I'd say she'll be fine. God knows I have issues with wome age gaps, but it's because of the differences in behavoir. If you don't act like your at a rowdy frat party, everything should go smoothly.

The hubby's best friend is married to a much younger woman and once she figured out I wasn't gonna change to a gunny sack to eliminate her weight issues and she calmed down and stopped getting so wasted we ended up being quite good friends.

She's adorable and funny and I get to feel worldly and smart. It's pretty cool. Relax, all will be well.

You'd be surprised in some cases. The women my Interest (who's 45) has associated with are rather catty when I come in the picture. However, some of these women had expressed acute romantic interest in the Interest before he and i started seeing each other, so that may be an influencing factor.

OK first...I,M SOOO jealous. I've seen Billy Joel in concert twice(once driving through a damn blizzard to see him at Nassau Colluseam in NY) and he puts on a fantastic show. Just remember...no matter how many times he walks of stage and says the good bye...DONT GET UP. The show is never over until he sings Piano Man.If nothing else...if the people you are with dont know that...you'll seem all knowledgeable if you tell them to sit back down and why when it seems the concert it over...just keep clapping. Until Piano Man..he'll come back..sometimes 2 or 3 times he fakes the end.

It's only his hardcore fans like me that stay seated regardless of what he says...once the band even started packing up and people around us were looking at us like we were nuts because we werent moving. We just smiled and said "you'll seeee"

Also trivia...Billy Joel was the FIRST American artist to perform after the Cold War in Russia (his album Kohept is live from that concert)

At the concert in NY I went to..it was his daughter Alexxa Ray's birthday coming up. (she was just a kid then). Before the concert he had the WHOLE venue sing happy birthday Alexxa Ray. Because he wanted her to know what it felt like to have 50,000 people sing happy birthday to her!

Anyway..I know I rattled but I just ADORE him and his music. And hopefully I gave you some trivia to chat about on the way.

Dont worry about the woman. I'm 35(ALMOST ..next month) and if a friend my age (man or woman) was dating someone half their age(well maybe not HALF unless they were older then me because that would be a felony!lolol..oh wait..my 24 yr old best friend IS dating a 17 year old guy. Oh well...so even that maybe if circumstances are ok...his parents know and love her)...a long a that person was cool and not an immature ditz...and they were happy ..I wouldnt care.

So try to talk about Billy since thats what your all going to. Hell..if the chick says anything about you being younger...umm..Billy Joel is MARRIED to a chick half HIS age. And shes paying money to see him..so there!

Hope that info helps. Feel free to PM me if you want....like I said...I've been an obsessed Billy fan since I was little so Ilm all chock full of info on him!!In school when everyone else put down on the "who would you want to meet" little worksheets...Madonna, Michael Jackson,Prince....I ALWAYS said Billy Joel. My dream wa to grow up and marry him.

    What? Worked for Katie Holmes...lololol

Relax and enjoy the evening. Remember if anyone has issues with you age, it's their issues not yours.

The feeling was totally mutual, and I wish you were still in PDX!

Yeah, I've been told I'm older than my age since I was about fourteen. Part of it is that I grew up with a brother 8 years older than me, and so culturally I feel more like a part of his generation, and find friends accordingly...

    OH MY GOD

Better update later but I was second row center. I'm all over the concert DVD, and he threw a signed ball into the crowd and my friend caught it! Saw Steven Tyler, Tony Bennett, and SIR FUCKING PAUL MCCARTNEY from 20 ft away.

I had better seats than his daughter, Christie Brinkley, even HIS WIFE! (Who passed us by and was looking amazing!)

Don't worry too much about this. I'm nearly 40 and feel perfectly comfortable hanging out with much younger people (and much older for that matter). And although many people still feel strange about an age gap, it is much more accepted now than it was in my mother's generation (baby boomers are in denial of their own aging process, it seems and any reminder of their aging is taken as a personal affront).

How did I completely forget ROGER DALTRY of THE WHO played?!!

The girl was INSANE but pretty entertaining. She latched on to me like her bff and everything was good. She was a complete lush...I kept walking back and forth to either go pee or get a drink!

But I had a great night, that ended in a suite in the Tribeca Grand Hotel... probably the best night of my life, honestly.

When Paul McCartney and Billy were singing the final song, "Let it Be", I swear the entire fucking place was almost in tears. It was really crazy to be standing there, taking such a piece of history in. I was just completely awed that I was able to experience that SO CLOSELY!

And I have pictures, but they're crappy camera-phone ones.

^ What a great ending to the story!

BTW, if your friend really does look like Clooney, it would only be weird if he's not with an awesomely hott girl half his age.

My guess is that you all got along famously.

    Yeah, I know, I couldn't resist.

Final song "let it be"??? He ALWAYS ALWAYS ends with Piano Man. BUt I guess it was different if he was doing the concert with someone else.

Hey, he played it second to last! On the set list, it called it the "Souvenier", it didn't even have the song. I think it was supposed to be like a very special, poignant thing for them to sing "Let it Be" together like that.
