Default Horrible red wine headache? What's up?

Does anyone else get this? I'm not talking about the next day, like a hangover headache, but it comes on pretty quickly after drinking at least 2 glasses of a bold red (like Cabernet, Shiraz, etc..)

It doesn't happen every time, but occasionally I will get this splitting headache after about glass number two. I am not sure if it's a certain wine that's causing it, I haven't seen a pattern with the headaches with any particular brand.....or maybe certain foods that I combine with the wine? I don't normally get headaches alot at all.

Last night I had about 3 small glasses of a decent Cabernet, and was feeling fine, then all of a sudden the headache came on really quickly. It was bad, I mean I was in so much pain I was actually crying (I haven't had a headache that bad since high school when I used to get migraines so bad I'd throw up, black out and whatnot) I had to take my husband's ice packs for his lunch and pack my head with them, and popped like 4 Advil.

I love red wine so much, but I think I am going to have to stay away from it completely. I'm still feeling dizzy today and there is still some pain in my neck....I've been drinking water all day too.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

Red wines have a tendency to cause headaches more so than white ones. It's more likely the cheap ones will have sulfites as opposed to high end brands. Some establishments overprice their wines, especially stripclubs. I find that fuller bodied wines very seldom give me a headache. Maybe even try a chardonnay? I rarely get headaches with white wines especially if I drink plenty of water as well.

you might be seriously dehydrated. Alcohol dehydrates you any ways but if you haven't consumed much liquid prior or you aren't drinking water with it that could be the reason. Order a glass of water with each glass of wine. Finish both before ordering another.

I've only had issues with feeling sick after drinking cheap wine (or beer). What sorts of wine are you drinking? Try drinking lots of water/ gatoraide beforehand. If you have health insurance, it might be worth a doctor's visit. Everyone responds differently to different drinks. How much do you drink per day/ week on average?

Its the sulfites, and it happens to me only if I drink TOO much wine.

    I love red wine though.

I LOVE red wine..preferably a good cab or shiraz. Wine often gives the WORST hangovers! Drink a ton of water and EAT..preferably bread of some sort to absorb the acid in your stomach. It also helps to take an ibuprofen and eat some bread before you go to bed.

Probably the sulfites, as others have said. Cheap wines often have sulfites *added*, but even expensive wines form some of them naturally. Here's a fact sheet:
    http://www.ecowine.com/sulfites.htm

"all imported and domestic wines, beers and spirits exceeding 10 parts per million of sulfites bear the mention "Contains Sulfites" on their label. Wines that contain less than 10 ppm sulfites are not required to put "Contains Sulfites" on their labels; however, this does not mean the wine is "sulfite-free" or contains no sulfites."

So you might want to look for a label without that remark, to find a low-sulfite wine, and see if that's what's causing the problem.

The other thing: I sometimes get headaches right after drinking, whether or not it's wine, and I find that electrolyte depletion may be responsible -- so take a pinch of lite salt and a big glass of water with each drink and this can help as well. If you are getting pain in the neck, that can point to electrolyte depletion, which causes muscle tension. The lite salt (sodium chloride + potassium chloride) re-balances and helps you retain the fluids you drink.

Although the discussion of the sulfites has some merit , it is most likely due to recurrence of your migraines. Alcohol especially red wine can be a precipitating factor. Unfortunately avoidance is the primary therapy. If the headaches persist there is some wonderful new drugs for migraines. Good luck.

I think all of this makes sense....the dehydration, electrolyte depletion, etc....it make sense....I just remembered that I had taken a water pill earlier that day. I had a few glasses of water but not enough I guess.

What about the tannins (?) in red wine? I've heard they cause headaches as well.

I get this with certain vodkas. I don't know anything about wine, but in vodka if it's distilled in a certain way it gives me a SPLITTING headache in 2 seconds flat.

I looked up "allergic to vodka" and found out that a lot of people seem to have issues depending on how stuff is distilled.

Like I said I dont know anything about wine, but it could be the specific way it's processed that gets to you. Cheap and expensive ones could share the same process and give you a headache all the same.

Red wine always gives me a headache, cheap or expensive. I just stick to white and rose now.

I switched to organic reds and that seems to help quite a bit. I still get a hangover if I drink too much, but the headaches from a glass or two and much decreased.

I've got plenty of groceries in my area that sell organic reds, but I've also bought online at the organic wine company. I am very impressed with their selection and service. they will email you all the damn time, though. That gets annoying.

    Water water water water WATER.
    And more WATER.
Me and my girls when I was steady working at Christie's would go through 3 or 4 bottles a night (back when you could get them fairly cheap and drink in VIP)...we were the three musketeers/drunketeers; lol. But I learned fast..
Now I have one glass, then half a glass of water, and so on.
    Best of luck!

    Everything she said ^^^

Also I make sure I have a hotbath before bed in which I drink a couple of pints of water. Have a lie-in the next day too.

Red Wine is one of my favourite things in world, those bloody sulphites can give me the worse hangover if I dont prepare before hand. Its unfair.

Ugh, I have the worst hangover. I've been in bed since 6 pm yesterday, only getting up to get some food! I went to the Portland International Beer Festival and made an awful goal of getting the most alcohol % for the fewest tickets... I ended up pretty much passing out by there (luckily found by some friends) and then pushed my bike the 2 miles back to my house in the sunshine... I didn't drink any water at all and spent the next 6 hours just unable to move... ugh... I'm still in bed... a good 18 hours... I've gotten some nice reading done, that's about it!

...but yeah, re the red wine, sounds like sulfites. Hydration!

If I start drinking early in the day, have a few cocktails (like 2), I'll usually get a headache by the late afternoon. I always think it's like a hangover w/out sleeping, but idk what causes it honestly.

I don't think this is really uncommon. It might be the sulfites in the wine....even good wine does have it sometimes. Trust me, I've gotten a wine headache of Opus before so..... I don't have any answers, but i don't think it's weird.

I used to get killer red wine headaches when my hormones were screwed up- not so much anymore.

I second the organic wine suggestion. Some people are just more sensitive to impurities in liquors....

Red wine triggers headaches, that's a given! My Dr. told me to avoid it at all costs....If I drink red wine, I have a BLINDING headache within an hour or two.
