Default My cat is a bunny murderer

He's not really my cat. He's more like a stray that wouldn't leave my yard for like a month. So then I felt bad because he was so skinny and sweet, so I began feeding him. And then it got cold, so I got him checked out at the vet and let him inside. He basically came in only when it was really cold or to eat.

He doesn't really like being inside because the dogs torment him and he just loves being outside. He will sit at the door and cry until I let him out. He basically comes in to eat and leave. I could leave his food outside, but we have all sorts of animals that will eat it around here.

He's really sweet to people, and doesn't mess with my dogs or ferrets, but I know he's got an appetite for mice. I often find mouse vomit around my house. ICK!

So last week I see him outside noming furiously. He almost looked like he was yakking. But no, he was shredding a baby bunny to pieces! Asshole. And I think the bunny attacked him a little because he had a gash on his chin/neck area and his eye wasn't opening all the way.

So I cleaned him up, and locked him to in the basement (he's got food, water and a litter box down there, and the dogs can't bother him) but he cried all fucking night. He's just not an indoor cat.

Then this morning I go outside to let the dogs out and he's carrying around another baby bunny. But he dropped it and it squirmed a little! It was still alive! I don't know how injured it was, but he ran away when I pulled Cat (that's pretty much his name) off him.

I'm so mad at that stupid cat. He's currently locked in my basement again, crying. He was stalking the deck that the baby bunny hid under. I hate doing this to him, but I don't know what else to do! I can't let him wreak havoc on the neighborhood bunnies.

People say to me all the time "that's just what animals do, it's in their nature", but I HATE when they do that! Especially to little defenseless ones like baby bunnies. I had a cat that would do stuff like that. Once he was terrorizing a chipmunk in our yard while I was out there. I ran around screaming at my ex husband to do something, but I finally had to take matters in my own hands. I wadded up a newspaper and whopped his butt with it good.

The newspaper wasn't thick so I know it didn't really hurt, especially since it kept folding in half every time I smacked him with it. But I was yelling NO at him while I was doing it and he finally let the chipmunk go. Then I guess he felt guilty because he was really clingy the rest of the day.

If you don't want to do something like that, spray him in the face with a spray bottle of water the next time you catch him doing it.

    And BABY bunnies!

    they are the cutest!

I hope he didn't hurt that one. He was so stunned he was motionless for awhile. I almost thought of bringing him inside too! Because you know, I don't have enough animals in here.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but I really believe that that is just nature. No species would exist if it weren't for hunting and that is what your cat is doing.

I have to admit I don't care for cats as much anymore. I lived with three that would shit all over the house and prey on eachother for shoots and giggles....That's the life of a cat.

However, dogs gang up in pairs or packs and shred their prey. Take your complaints to Mother Nature, the Flinty Hearted Biatch.

I totally get nature and it being normal. I just hate it.

    Baby bunnies! Infinite cuteness!

Mice...at least he swallows them whole (from what I can tell in his vomit) but these bunnies are being slowly killed. It makes me sad.

I want to lock him up where he has cat food, but he lives for being outside.

I am personally against having an outdoor cat, especially after my dog got hit and killed by a car in February, but it's his thing. He's a former stray. I think he'd suffer if he were an indoor cat. I've tried it with him for like 2 weeks and he seemed miserable.

I just don't know what to do. He's in danger outside...not to mention all the bunnies. But he hates being inside.

    OMG

One time I got locked out on my back deck at my parents and had to sit out there for a couple hours until my parents ame home.

My dogs meanwhile had found a bunny "nest" and were making a feast of the bunny-lets. My german shepard was like, tossing them into the air and playing with them. I could hear them SCREAMING! I threw up and even though I went around to the front, I could hear them for an hour and a half, just making a buffet of the bunnies.

I think we all understand that it's normal just when it's something so cute and that happens your just stunned . I love bunnies so I would be pretty pissed even though I know its "natural". On another note I remember when I got a Betta Fish and a small crab, I didn't think they would fight but they did. The betta sucked the crabs eyes and the crab tried to pinch it, of course after that I put them in diffrent small aquariums.

My cat went from being an outdoor to an indoor. Someone had her declawed but let her out or she ran awya or something and she was getting badly hurt by the other neighborhood kitties.

She looks out the window allllll day and I feel sad about it, but she's adjusted pretty well. She used to be very skittish of people, would stay under my bed the whoooole day. Now shes happy and fat and sleeps all day.

I think Cat would be ok if you can deal with the crying for about a week.

This true story won't make you feel better, but will illuminate The Circle of Life-

We adopted a tomcat & locked him in the bathroom while we looked for a new home for him. He got miserable and bored and snuck out of the house.

My dog ate him by cornering him on the back porch. But not before the tomcat tore up his face and neck, leaving him with a grossly infected set of bite marks and scratches. I paid the vet $206 to drain the infection [cellulitis] out of his collar area and face- to this day, my dog has bad breath from the massive infection in his head.

    (No shit!)

I know, I've had terrible luck with animals.

A couple of years before that, my hamster ate the head off of my sisters hamster. Completely.

You try not to "judge" the animal when they do things like that... they don't really know better, but it really freaks me out. I think I just completely stopped playing with the hamster that did that b/ afterwards it got kinda agressive and would always bite. I was "mad" at my dogs for a couple of days after the bunny incident. I don't know...its still messed up!

    That's how I feel. I get it. I just don't like it.

I had two hamsters do that too. So weird because they lived together for awhile and then one day, one was murdered. I thought hamsters were vegetarians!

I remember when I was like 14 years old and was looking outside the window at a squirrel. When I got up to look to see what he was nibbling on, it was a bird. WTF I thought they only ate nuts .

so then technically it's still infected and the doctor didn't clean it out all the way.

    They're pets but they're animals.
They do what they do ya know?

Cats are hunters by nature. About the only thing i've ever be helpful (other than keeping them inside and even THEN they manage to find things to hunt/kill) is the bell thing.

That might be a good name. I tried naming him Jacks, but it never really stuck.

I chose that name because I play a lot of poker, and pocket jacks are my nightmare hand. I don't want them, but I can't let them go either.
