Default Tell me about salmon. I lub lub lub it!

I went to this new sushi place that had inexpensive sashimi
and I've just fallen in love with the raw salmon that they serve.

It's like cream, nice and fatty and just sooo good. It's so good
    it's like dessert.

so now I'm going to look up sushi-grade salmon at whole foods.

I'd also like to look up other sushi-grade fish because I think
this will give me a good source of protein/fat ratio since I already
get bunches of starch and carbs.

anyway-- any other people out there who have gone this route?

I also think this might help me stay away from restaurants a little
bit since I want to cut down on how much I'm spending out.

In Hawaii we eat raw fish that has been seasoned... it's called "poke" (poh-key) It's like sushi without the rice. I used to eat like a half pound at a time! It was a REALLY good way to balance out my diet since it was such an easy snack.

You can make Poke with salmon too... just google it for some recipes. It's really good to eat fish raw (as well as most foods) cause the cooking can usually destroy the enzymes that make foods nutritious.

lol... it's a bit of an acquired taste tho

I eat heaps of salmon, but not usually the sushi raw variety. I usually steam it with lemon water and some rosemary or bake it in a dish of lemon juice and a dash of worchestershire.

It has greatly improved my mood... I stopped eating it right before I got depressed again and started putting more fish in my diet and felt better.

Another salmon lover herr too! I've got a bad ass spicy southwestern grilled salmon recipe that I will have to find and post. I've also got a awesome salmon pasta dish made with white wine, lemon, rosemary, roasted garlic and capers. I'll try to add them here next time I log in.

OMG that reminds me there is this stuff called Tony's caijun seasoning tht is soooooooooo good on salmon. Just throw a layer of the spices on your plate and coat the salmon with it and cook it regularly... DEEEEELISH!

Jamaican jerk seasoning is good with it like that too

Its very, very good for you, high in Omega 3.

Theres apparently some anti-ageing diet that involves eating salmon every day. My friend rang to tell me about it very excitedly one day as shed followed it and swears it reduced the lines around her eyes. We dont live close anymore so I cant comment as I dont see her.
Maybe google will have the details?

Salmon can be prepared in so many different ways, you can really customize it to any tastes or moods.

The spring salmon season along the CA and ORE coast was cancelled this year due to catastrophic drops in population. Even recreation fishing is not allowed. The WA and Alaska populations are being fished, but prices are up.

Always buy wild vs farm raised. Farm raised salmon are fatter, yet have less omega 3s, and more contaminants which are stored in the fat. Also wild salmon are pink due to eating a particular type of krill, while farm raised salmon flesh would be grey if they didn't add a dye to their feed.

i like my local WA salmon. but it is getting fished out, and also at risk due to hydroelectric energy concerns, among other things.

I wrap salmon in foil, drizzled with butter or lemon juice, and bake it for awhile. Then open the foil, add fetta cheese and bake it a bit more. I hear it's really good. I'm a veggie, so I can't eat half my own cooking, lol.

I LOVE sashimi, i don't really ever eat rolls or Nigiri unless somebody else orders it and I have a bite or two.

That said, I believe salmon is one of the easiest sushi foods to get sick on , but, I personally eat it every time I ever have sushi, and I also make ahi tuna steaks at home, and I have personally never had a problem.

Do you like Maguro (red tuna sashimi)? That is soooo good too!

My very close friend is a salmon fishing guide in Alaska and is very knowledgable (and snobby!) about salmon. He will not touch anything that was farmed.

It has to spawn and swim up the river to be good, according to him. The farmed ones are dirty and full of chemicals.

He's so hard core, he smokes salmon himself to last him through the winter.

You'd LOVE poke. It's basically sashimi but with some more flavors on it and usually not so nicely served but it's way cheaper. In Hawaii they sell it at the grocery store at the seafood counter it's like $7 a pound. You just get a little container of it... I'd eat it straight from the container with chopsticks oOoooooooOOOo... Thank god my pregnancy is almost over!!! They have smoked salmon poke too...

OMG and LOX BAGELS!!!! extra capers, cream cheese and tomato w/ olive oil EEEEEEEEE

Salmon sashimi is my favorite food in the world! Love how buttery it is. I went the Whole Foods route and even bought the sticky rice, nori , etc. and made my own philly rolls.....yummy.

^ from what I've read, farm raised has more contaminants (HDC was an acronym I kept seeing,) but then Wild will also have contaminants just not as much.

sooo, unless you're getting it from a local river that you know hasn't been contaminated, I'd say yes.

I'm allergic to salmon! It's strange.. i looove sushi and sashimi (and especially tuna poke!), but for some reason I'm extremely sensitive to salmon... it makes me puff up and my lips extremely sensitive (it rarely gets past my lips). I'm also allergic to peanuts and walnuts -- wonder if there's a correlation...

about salmon-- get wild not farmed, and also try to get pacific or alaskan not atlantic:

how to do an acidic bath to help clear out some parasites for raw salmon:
take frozen salmon (frozen also helps kill off parasites, sub zero is best)
thaw, and cut into meal sized pieces, soak in
half apple cider vinegar and half water for 24 hours
    rinse and refrigerate:

also-- what is sushi grade meat?

I also try to take humaworm parasite cleanse at least twice a year (as does my dog). I really should take it 3 times a year but I'm lazy.

humaworm.com ($29 incl. shipping for a one month adult supply. $10 for dog's five day parasite treatment.)

When I go for sushi, yellowtail and albacore are always my top picks... but I love baking with wild salmon! I'll put it on the grill with some lemon juice, butter, and fresh basil.

salmon is not that good for you. but when you do eat fish do it raw. when you cook the meat it loses vitamins and minerals tayht your body needs to survive on planet earth.

I don't like fish. OK maybe now and then. But the idea of raw fish wrapped up like a blanket makes me wanna cry. Nope...you're right...I haven't tried it. But I'm not at a point in my life that I will. It's crossed my mind..then I hit myself in the head and say "are you crazy!"

"Wild" salmon, not farmed is a very safe, very healthy choice of fish to eat. Wild salmon are not 'bottom eaters' like halibut, cod, shellfish, etc, so mercury levels are very, very, very low.

I was raised were fresh salmon was a regular part of our diet, so I became a fish snob.

Super useful. Thanks! I make some cooked types of sushi at home but have been too scared to try and of the raw styles because I didn't know how to do it in a safe manner. But now I think I'm going to give this method a try. Woohoo!
