    Default Watchmen

What is possibly the greatest graphic novel of all time? We all of a sudden have this weird view of graphic novels. Like they are something different than just a plain old comic book. Most of the time this is crap. Most often it's a comic book. Some break that mold: The Dark Knight Returns, Red Son, Sin City, V for Vendetta. But watchmen ripped that mold limb from limb.

Now they are making a movie out of it. A risky as HELL movie, since it's not based on anyone you know. Same guy that did 300 is making Watchmen.

    Check the trailer.

i'd put watchmen equally with miller's dark knight (not the current movie). once i'd agree with you that it's almost impossible to do in movie form.

but LOTR changed my view on that.

the preview is pretty good. my only concern is whether they can do it in one movie, time-wise/detail-wise.

    They ARE comic books.
They're just bound differently and tend to be aimed at a more "mature audience".

BTW Watchmen is the only graphic novel to win a Huga Award if i'm not mistaken.

    you're correct! (Hugo)

i forgot to list Sandman among the two i posted before. i think they should've gotten Hugos too. they won other awards though. it's those three...and all the rest are comics imo.

although the Preacher and Lucifer story arcs are also on par.

    yes, i'm a comic geek.

I can't stand preacher. Garth Ennis annoys me. It's like "LOOK HOW FAUX EDGY I CAN BEEEEEE! LOOK! LOOK!"

And, to add to the list of great GN's, the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a heck of a story, as well. Shit movie, great Comic.

well, it was written to reflect the time slightly afterwards so i guess you can look at it like that.

maybe i'm just partial to him because of Hellblazer. i love the John Constantine although i HATED the keanu reeves movie. gahh!

i like reeves it's just he was not meant to be constantine. otoh, colin farrell could've been good.

Dunno how much they can fit in the time constraints of what, 2, 2.5 hours, but the trailer looked great. I hear they're releasing the Black Freighter as a separate release.

They're on the cover of Entertainment Weekly right now, too. MrsC came in with the mail and I gave a little squeal of delight. Please don't let it suck.

I know nothing of the novel or the comic but it looks cool. I like dark stuff like this. Just watched the trailer. Gotta wait till next year.

Or else we just weren't geeky enough to be all "OMG Alan Moore is my homeboy!"
I hope it's good, too, but, eh, I'm prepared to be disappointed. Which means as long as it's mediocre, I won't be upset.

Tis a shame...the "geeky" coolness present here is a major part of this sites charm....that and your avatar and great music choices . Ooops, enough cheese, don't wanna get Mr. Wayward in a stir! Oh yeah...bonus geeky cool points if you are "down with" the creators of current avatar....for a day or two anyways. I vonder who plays Rorshach? I'm thinkin that Danny Bonaduce would have been perfect.

^ Rorshach is Jackie Earl Haley, aka Kelly from the original Bad News Bears. He was in that "Little Children" flick a few years ago too. Dr Manhattan is Billy Crudup and I think he's the biggest "name" in the flick.

I went to a midnight screening. Oddly, I think it will be more satisfying for people who haven't read it, although the film is ridiculously faithful.

I saw it today, well half of it since I walked out before it finished. I found it boring, didn't make sense. I HATE gore/slasher movies and it definitely was that. I thought there was a lot of unnecessary violence - rape scene. a child being fed to dogs a billion scenes of people being splattered with blood, another billion scenes of peoples leftover chunks flying through the air after being blown to bits. I have nightmares without being fed that sort of crap!! I wish the trailers gave me a clue about how violent and revoltingly sick the movie would be.
    Not my thing at all.
