Default anyone ever lived in an extended-stay hotel?

If so, what was your experience like? Did you feel safe? Better, worse or pretty much equal to apartment life--and how so?

When you went to apply for apartments later on, did they give you a hard time or treat you as "less than" when they saw you'd lived in a hotel for more than a few months? Or did you use them as a reference with no problems? (I'm guessing I could put that down on a future apt application, b/c they'd be verifying the same things as they'd ask of a landlord--basically did I pay rent on time?)

I'm thinking about it, since I'm only going to be here for less than a year for school. The hassle of applying for apartments doesn't seem worth it for that amount of time. The one I'm looking at seems to be in a good area as far as I can tell, and the monthly rate is equal to what I'd pay for rent in an apartment. hmm....

Sorry if I'm not much help. I lived in hotels as a kid. My Dad's work made him travel a lot, but they covered the stay for x amount of months untill he found a house.

Maybe you should just say a fake employer covered your relocating expensises for a bit when you look for a permanent place.

The only thing I hate about being in extended stays for more than a week or so is the fact that it seems like some dumbass always ends up setting something on fire in their kitchens when I'm staying there. It's happened more than once in 3totally different parts of the country.

Otherwise, aside from the beds not being as comfy, I like extended stays. I get to have a full kitchen that's equipped for me to actually cook while I'm there, and it's much more quiet than a normal hotel, at least in my experience.

After my divorce, I lived in several. I ended up hating it because I felt unsettled the whole time and unsafe. At first, it was okay, but after about a month, I was going stir crazy. Also, the kitchens are so tiny and it's hard to cook, so I ended up eating out constantly. They never felt like home to me. There was no coziness about any of them. And of course, the mattresses suck!

Make sure to get one that you have to walk through the lobby and have a key card to access the floors, not the type where your door is outside and you can enter straight from the parking lot. IMO those are safer.

I lived in a few in different parts of Houston and Las Vegas, and while there were some nice families and/or traveling business people living there, there were always shady characters too. Lots of dealers/junkie types.

I never put any extended stay info on applications. I've always used my parent's address.

I think they are okay for short term living arrangements, like less than 3 months.

^^^ agree with JLynne that they're OK for the short term, but A. you never really feel safe and B. a lot of weird shit can go on. This seems to be especially true once other people at the hotel begin to 'notice' that an extremely hot girl who works nights happens to be staying in suite 107 !!!

The longest I ever stayed in the same extended-stay hotel was 6 weeks I think. I was definitely ready to leave just as soon as my initial 'work commitments' were completed.

I have a few seperate times for about 3 months each time. It's convenient for the short term but I agree with PP's - you never feel completely safe and it feels like a cheap hotel/motel room.

I really hated it to be honest. I got freaked out alot, especially when I was home alone with a newborn. Alot of times the people around you are pretty creepy - one time we had a bunch of drug dealers above us (the cops were contsntly serving search warrants all over that place) and a couple next to us that were constantly screaming at each other. We had an issue with prostitutes constantly knocking on the door at all hours. Drove me batty. Keep in mind this was one experience, the other two were not that awful.

In the long run it wasn't that much cheaper than a regular apartment. I personally would have rather gone that route.

I never used the address either when applying for apartments/rental homes.

Thanks Yeah it is set up where you go through the lobby and have a keycard. IMHO the little motels where the room doors open into the street are usually seedy; I would never live in one that was set up like that. And I have a thing about not living on the ground or first floor ever--in apartments, hotels, you name it.

This one is a high-rise, and it's both extended stay and daily/weekly rental. From what I can tell it seems to get a mix of business people, families on vacation, newcomers to the city who stay there while looking for apartments, and artsy 20-somethings who just want to live in a hotel. But I'm not naive enough to think there are no shady characters there!

I actually prefer to live in tiny studio spaces (maybe I'm weird), so I'm not worried about the caged-rat feeling. Safety is my #1 concern when it comes to this.

I'm going to have to stay there for 3 months regardless...so I guess I'll see what it's like and if I feel safe there, I'll stay for the rest of my time in the city...and if not, I'll go apartment-hunting.

    Thanks for the responses everyone!

    ^^

I like to live in small spaces too! When I was little, I saw a show about gnomes who slept in beds in cabinets and for the next year I was trying to empty out the lower kitchen cabinets and sleep in there!

The idea of living in a hotel really does appeal to me- I guess I'm only of those artsy 20 somethings.

Oh, good question- do you still get maid service? B/c that would be the shit!

I lived in the seedy outdoor enterance variety and it was AWFUL and scary. I lived in the Budget Suites (actually two different onces) when I first moved in to Las Vegas and it was pimps and drug dealers and crack heads who couldn't get an apartment but somehow could come up with 300 dollars a week for a hotel room.

the one you are describing sounds decent though. have you checked the rates they can get REALLY expensive like upwasrds of 600/week in some places.

^^^I lived in one of those Budget Suites in LV too! I swear I was so paranoid coming home from work, I always thought I was going to get robbed/raped/something horrible was going to happen.

I just looked up extended stay hotels and the prices range from 36-75 dollars a night-!!! That is NOT cheaper than an apartment, you'd be better off renting a room in a house and not having to go through a landlord and getting a lease.

I worked in an extended stay hotel in the denver tech center. Ginger is right, some idiot is always setting something on fire. It does turn out to be more expensive than an apartment would be, most of the time.

I wouldn't suggest it it for any more than a month at a time.

I did it for awhile while building a house because I didn't want to get stuck in an apt. lease but after several weeks I just hated it. Hated it so much that I swore I'd never do it again.

I feel really safe at studio plus, homesteads, etc. Extended stays bother me because of the balconies. Studio plus' usually you need a key to get in the building itself after 11 and after that you know a key to your room obviously.

** you may want to go on craigslist and look for a furnished studio wherever you are locazted. it will save you money

For 2 weeks once while we were waiting to find a home to rent when we moved to MD. It sucked. ROYALLY. Luckily I had a job as a live out nanny and they let me bring my clothes over to wash and such. The washer/dryer almost never worked there.
Also, there were only shitty restaurants close by and the kitchen amenities were minimal.
My dad prefers it though, but he gets the really nice places. He lives there when he has 3-4 week jobs away from home. I guess it depends on where you stay.

Tara: that's pretty much it for me--not wanting to get stuck in a lease. God knows how much money I've lost because of needing/wanting to move before a lease was up. And a break from the jumping-through-hoops bullshit that's always gone with renting an apartment would be nice.

got2havespunk: ew, an extended stay in MD? No wonder! It seems like decent extended-stay places are a west coast thing. I've stayed in a couple of really nice ones in CA and there seem to be some good ones here, but every one I know of in the northeast is a disgusting slum.

Aubreyy: hehe, I've always wanted to live in a hotel too. Silly as it may sound.

VP: bleh, Budget suites sounds awful. The place I'm looking at is $800/month including utilities, which is about what I'd pay for a regular studio plus utils.

I don't want to rent a room b/c I've had it up to here with roommates and shared living. I've had a slew of mostly hellacious roommates for the past 6 years including college, and I'm just done with that.

When I moved to SF the first time around I stayed in an extended stay hotel for a month and NEVER AGAIN. First off all, my room was haunted (it was a super old building), my CD played would turn itself on in the middle of the night and once it wasn't even plugged in. One night, I'm just lying there and all the sudden I hear NIN 'a warm place' come on. It scared the shit out of me!!
I checked out 2 days after that because that was just too crazy for me. Crack heads i can handle...ghosts not so much.

Half the people in the hotel were out of their mind crazy and there were drug addicts and dealers all over.
Plus, they didn't even have air conditioning. Granted, it wasn't a super fancy hotel, but still!

I would only stay in one if you won't be spending a lot of time in your actual room. It was just depressing as fuck for me. Maybe the one's in your area are nicer than the ones here. Actually they probably are because the ones here are shit. I've noticed that the one's right outside of the city closer to the suburbs seem to be safer and nicer in general.

I agree with everyone else. Keep your stuff locked up. I was constantly worried I was going to get robbed because my club was down the street and I was coming home at 4am alone every night with cash. I don't think i got one single good night's rest in the whole month I was there.

It wasn't the Tropicana, was it? That was the creepiest place I've ever stayed in, and that's saying a lot.

What if you could find a month-to-month lease in a regular apartment building or a weekly corporate apartment rental? A month-to-month lease option usually has fewer restrictions and are more liberal with credit-history shy people. Archstone is an rental company with several locations throughout the US.

    No, wasn't the Tropicana.
It was this seedy little place above happy donuts on Kearny St.
Can't remember the name of the place though. I was working at Hustler which was literally up the street and that's the only reason I was staying there. There are some of the creepiest res. hotels ever in North Beach.

Was the Tropicana haunted too? I swear half the building in SF have ghosts in them because they're all so damn old.

I know! Every time I see an apartment ad that boasts about "1920's charm" in a "beautiful historic building", I shudder.

I don't even believe in ghosts, it's just that 80+ year old buildings are gloomy and depressing as fuck. Like being stuck in a rotting time machine.

Though strangely enough, I stayed in a 300+ year old building in Italy and loved it; wasn't creepy at all. How many ghosts do you think that place had?

I have looked into that...but everything I've found has been ridiculously expensive. My credit score is awesome (750), it's the income requirements/proof that's always a huge hassle.

Half the time all I had to do was tell the apt leasing people "I'm self-employed", and they started treating me like I'd just crawled out of the sewer and couldn't get rid of me fast enough. WTF is that shit?

It will be easier after I'm done school and can use my 'day job' for proof of income.

can you get any housing through school for the short term? Check their web site or call student services and see if they can offer any help. they might know of a reputable apt in the area that has short term leases.
