    Default Portland--I'm on my way!

I made a big step toward my huge insane cross-country move today. I bought a one-way plane ticket out there for July 29th. Current plan is to get temp housing and a job, maybe at 205, HS, or Mary's but I am pretty open to any club that doesn't habitually break OLCC regs. (I am actually really excited to be going back to the club, I haven't danced in a couple years aside from placing 3rd in an "amateur" night awhile back). While I am there I plan to find more permanent housing while I make money dancing and then fly back to the Midwest after a couple weeks or so, get a rental car or van and move my stuff and my cat to Portland permanently. I am checking craigslist and couchsurfing to find a place to stay for my transitional period but I thought I would ask here too in case any of the Portland SWers can help me out. It's a little nervewracking to look for housing with strangers when I don't know how they feel about dancers, even though I know dancing is way more common and accepted in PDX. I can contribute some rent money if needed for the time I am there. Any suggestions or leads are SO appreciated!!! Thanks ladies!!

Maybe you can sublet Yekhefah's place while they are working in Seattle. Welcome!

    Thanks!
I got a call back on a sublet from craigslist and the girl and the house seem cool, so I'm planning on taking that. I was going to wait until tomorrow to decide/wait to hear back from other CLers, but then I figured it was the right time and price with laid-back people so I should just take. I left her a message a little bit ago, hope to hear back soon. It's pretty far from both Dolphins/Stars (especially without a car), kind of far from 205, not bad to Viewpoint, kind of average to most other places I searched. It's in NoPo in a mostly residential area. I was thinking Viewpoint might be a good place for me because I am used to selling dances for most of my money, and all that stage dancing at the smaller places might be a lot for me to handle right off the bat, being out of practice and all. I'm really excited that things are starting to fall into place! And I think it will be easy for me to stick it out even if money is lagging right now--I'm guessing it will pick up as the weather cools off. I am NOT one of those "dance for $50 a night and be happy" kind of girls, but after working $7/hr crap for awhile, I will be happy to clear $150 and work my way back up.
I'm very excited but also a little freaked out because I now have one week to get everything finished up here! That was one reason I bought the ticket though--a deadline will help keep me motivated to get things done.

What's HS? I can't figure that one out.

And well have to do another Portland meetup soon, so you can meet all the girls here .

    A meetup would be cool!
HS is Hawthorne Strip, I feel like someone told me to check it out.

    Oh ya. I've been there.

I'd try a bigger club if I was you. From what I've been hearing, those smaller stage clubs are kinda slow. Girls are talking about making only a hundred or so a night.

I'd hit up a larger one. The Viewpoint might be a good place to start, if they are slow, try the Dolphin clubs. Good Luck!

as a dancer who lived car-less in portland.... i can tell you that it is absolutely no problem getting to the dolphin clubs, stars, 205, any freaking club in the city- by bus. It's really safe to leave around 7-8 for work on public transit, most stop within a block of the club, and then taxi is anywhere from 10-30 depending on where you live. Some clubs have drivers that will give you a discounted rate. the public transit is awesome... i miss it so much now that i'm in fl.

^^Very true. I don't own a car and never had a problem getting to DI or to Exotica while living in deep SE.

trimet.org is your friend (public transit website)!

google maps provides public transit options when searching for directions! That is what shied me away from some of the beaverton clubs...it's like an hour by bus to get there according to google. but maybe I will just have to try it and see. thanks everyone for being so welcoming and helpful! i just got official word back on the sublet, I got it and they are letting me come a couple days earlier since I'll be flying in before the other tenant leaves. woohoo!

You know what the PDX Blackbook needs? A dancer carpool board.

I was in the same position when I moved to Portland - wanted a dance sale focused club. They are there. I like mixing it up; a good $ stage-only shift is a nice mental break, a good dance-selling is a physical break!

Even though I burned out on working there, the Dolphin would be a good place for you to start. You don't have to schedule and theres money to be made there if you can hustle! If you're taking the bus I'd reccomend going in a few days and staying from 5pm until closing.
They will most likely hire you right off the bat. Just refuse to do day shifts, which they will bully you to do. While day shift is fine sometimes, its slow in the summer and you don't want to end up not getting any nights because of the management trying to get you on days. Tell them you have a day job, school, or a kid and you can't.

yea^ that would be very helpful

I carpooled with anastacia to the dolphin a lot of the time, but the bus isn't bad either--- from central downtown it only took me 20 minutes via bus, from north portland, 45 (to both DI and DII)

I put in a schedule request at Hawthorne Strip today! It's a haul by bus, but I'm only in this house for a month and I don't have to stay at that club forever obviously. I think it will be a good club to start at and get back into the swing of things. I also have a lead on a potential room for after my sublet runs out. Hooray!
Hope to see you all around sometime!
