OMG that is the best area ever!! I LOVE the neghborhood around the school. What does she like to do?? The Zoo and Balboa Park are awesome if she's into any of that, and they're not far away at all. It's not far from a decent mall, Petco Park for baseball games....lots of restaurants and shops. In my experiences there, in general, people are so cool and laid back and nice. Will she have a car down there? I HATE driving down there, I swear it's worse than downtown Chicago, those californians drive like a bunch of crazy people!
I've been born and raised in the heart of Chicago, but I really don't know what info you're looking for about big cities? Since I've lived here all my life, I guess I probably take a lot for granted....and I really have no idea what advice I could offer.
I've been to San Diego, specifically that area, like 4 times and it's one of my favorite places ever. She'll love it. (If she doesn't, I'll go in her place!!!!). I probably haven't been much help to you here, but if you have more specific questions I can answer, I'd be more than happy to.

I believe she's destined for something way bigger than our stupid little home-town. She's a total girly-girl, captain of her cheer squad for two years, gorgeous and smart. She got into the University of Oregon, where I go, but she's just not into academia. She's very stylish and looked very out of place at the hick high school we went to.
She will have a car, and this part really concerns me because I've heard that parking is a bitch around the area of her school. She will be living sort of near the marine base out there because my great aunt has a studio for her to live in so she'll have to drive into downtown for school. I personally don't think this is the best set-up but she doesn't have the money to rent around there.
As far as the big city advice goes, it would probably be easier for people to answer if they've gone from smaller to bigger cities. There are just so many common sense city things that just don't occur in littler towns. I mean, I moved to a very mid-sized city from there and I was still like WTF? parking meters?
I have another younger sister and for some reason I'm more worried about this one because she's the youngest and kind of gullible even though she's freaking smart.

Hmmm, ok I have an idea in my head of the type of girl your sister is so I'm going to answer according to that assumption.
OK, the Paul Mitchell school is awesome and I think she'll love it. Its in downtown SD and pretty accessible from everywhere depending on where she finds a place to live. I'm guessing she'll like Pacific Beach or maybe Hillcrest. Party/college atmosphere and fun. Downtown might be another good alternative since she goes to school there but since she's 18 it might kinda suck being around that whole bar/club scene (unless she has an ID...which I'm not recommending or unrecommendingThere are some 18 and up clubs but they mostly suck (I guess unless you're under 21 and your other alternatives are house parties and TJ). She'll probably go but tell her to BE VERY VERY CAREFUL going to TJ. Sure it's the only alternative when you want to "legally" drink but it's getting very dangerous there. My friend is Hispanic (from Mexico) and works in a prison and STILL won't go across the border.
Hmmm, she's not 21 yet so I won't recommend clubs/bars but I'm sure she'll enjoy the different beaches (I see her as a Pacific Beach type girl). I KNOW she'll want to know where to shop. There are some amazing boutiques in downtown La Jolla. More boutiques in Hillcrest and Fashion Valley mall is great too. Outlet malls in Carlsbad and by the border. I can give you some recommendations on nail salons, hair places, spas, etc.
I'm sure she'll do fine on her own making new friends and stuff but the PB/Bar/Club type people (as a stereotype) make great acquaintances and party friends but not "real" friends. Yes, this is California and everyone is good looking but a lot of friendships/relationships are superficial.
Ohhhh, as a young pretty girl I bet she'd start (or already does) modeling. If she wants to get into that there are only TWO good agencies to work for in San Diego. Jet Set and San Diego Model Management. Everyone is basicaly a Barbizon-type rip-off. Amanda would be her contact at Jet Set and Linda for SDMM.
I can't think of anything else right now but feel free to ask me any specific questions.
Conducting myself in a terribly sexy fashion on and
Yeah....parking and traffic will be a *fun* and *special* treat for her. I've spent my entire life in Chicago, and I go downtown all the time and even I was irritated and overwhelmed by San Diego (and LA) driving and parking.
In Chgo, we have parking garages on every other block (downtown)....San Diego really doesn't. So it can take FOREVER to find street parking. I don't know if the school has a lot or an agreement with a lot, but if not, good freakin luck to her!
So are you talking about Pendleton, up by the Oceanside area??? She'll have quite a hike to school, if that's the case. I don't know much about their traffic patterns (rush hour, etc) but I do know that it's taken me a good 45 minutes with barely any traffic going between Oceanside and Gaslamp in San Diego and it once took my friend nearly an hour and a half coming in from Oceanside on a Saturday night. Traffic was terrible getting into the downtown area.
So yeah if that is the case, the commute might suck, but if she is being set up with a studio for free or for a good deal, it's worth it!
