Default Major universities with online degrees

I want to get a bachelor's in biology or something similar that would help me get a job working with animals. I don't want to be a vet or do medical stuff with animals.. more like animal behavior.

I want to get my degree from a major university. I know, I don't need to do that, but I've wanted a degree from a major school since I was little. I'd love to go to the University of Texas but they don't have much online. I've tried googling and doing individual searches of a few schools but can't find anything helpful. Does anybody know of any major schools with online degrees in an animal related field (besides vet medicine)?

I personally don't know of any. But I do know that even if you have a degree no one will hire you without YEARS of animal behavior experience. If I were you I'd try to get into a training facility that will allow you into some sort of an apprenticeship program or to a company that trains bomb/police dogs. Call around and look into it. I'd stay away form training places like Petsmart/Petco though. A lot of more *cough* serious companies consider this career suicide.
If you get no luck calling around, look into volunteering at the Humane Society. After a while you'll work your way into the training program, if you seem smart and dependable (which you are!) and that can lead to bigger and better things.
    Good luck!

Well you can take classes at ACC online, do CLEP but I'm sure there is still residency credits that you MUST take at the schools campus. They would only be the most basic classes. You'd have to do at least a full year at the college, especially UT. I think it's 32 at TXST.

The only fully online school I know of that is some what legit is Excelsior College. (I found out about it here: . I wouldn't really consider it a big name school though, but if an online degree is the only thing you can do....maybe it's an option....maybe, I dunno.

I think training in this field would probably be more benificail to get a job. There's only so much you can learn about training animals in a book.

I definetely plan on volunteering at an animal shelter/ humane society/SPCA etc. I'm just waiting on my paperwork to go through so I can get my nursing license and get a nursing job so I'll have a good idea of what my schedule will be like. Ideally, I'd like to nurse part time (maybe home health or something), dance a few nights a week and volunteer with animals. I'm not going back to school anytime in the immediate future so I've got at least a year or so to get experience with animals.

I'm not going to start school until we get settled in Florida which won't be for at least another 6 months or so. Online isn't my only option, but we're definetely going to Florida and it'll really limit my options. I could possibly take online basic classes and for ones that aren't offered online, possibly commute to school if I can get all my campus classes I need on the same 1 or 2 days a week.

I figured I should start trying to get my ducks in a row now, and kind of nail down a university so I can see what I need to do.

ETA: University of Florida has a zoology program! It's not offered online of course, but maybe we can live within reasonable
driving distance of Gainesville and I can do what I mentioned earlier. I don't mind taking my history, literature etc. online but I'd definetely want to be in a classroom for any math and science classes. I like both subjects but it's not really something I feel I can teach myself.

ETA again: Holy fucking shit. Okay, so since we didn't get the Daytona condo, our new plan is to move to Jacksonville and rent an apartment for a year and visit different places in Florida to shop around for properties. We want to find the perfect location... Anyhow, it's only 71 miles from Jacksonville to Gainesville. It looks like I may just become a Florida Gator

Hey I have family in Jacksonville. We should talk..I might be able to get you free food a few times (LOL my 2nd cousin who I talk to now and then is a restaurant owner). Also, we might come down there some time because we'd have a free place to stay.
On another note. I wouldn't take a zoology program. I was told this by professionals in the field over and over and over when I did an independent marine biology program with a Marine biology Prof in the Keys. You want to get into animal behavior. There are universities out there that have that particular program, and I think there is one in Floride. If not...try your online options again. It's a great field. You really need to pick what KIND of animals you want to work with.
Also if it's K9 Obedience, pick your area and specialize in hands on work there.
What type of animal work do you WANT to get into. I guess if it's a zoo you wanted to work at then zoology is the best bet. But it sounds like your talking more along the lines of behavior and training, which isn't always covered/preffered with a zoology degree.

^ I'd actually like to work at a zoo or sanctuary. I'd like to maybe help design the animal habitats and work with new animals to get them adjusted to the zoo. That would be animal behavior, wouldn't it? Or what would that be called? There is a serious lack of good information for this type of stuff. I'm having such a hard time Maybe I should just call a zoo or something?

That would be awesome to have a meetup in J-ville! I haven't spent much time there, but I like what I've seen so far.

ETA: I'd like to work with either elephants, giraffes or big cats if I need to pick a specific animal to work with.

Let me know when you're moving. I'll give you the name of the restaurant and the owners name and my real name. Obviously we'd have to play it off like we know each other. But, meh we do...fuck we've had internet sex. We know EVERYTHING about each other because of the that..LOL

I'd call a few zoo's and ask what they want for that kind of position, what the position is called and what ever other questions you have.

Places like the san degio zoo are probably going to require more skills than the san antonio one, and they'd require more than the austin "zoo". I'd call places in Florida too obviously so you know what they want, too.
