    Default Custom Costumes...

With dancing income being more and more sporadic, I've been thinking of doing custom costume/sewing work for dancers. I used to do custom sewing/wardrobe for conservative Christian women and really enjoyed it, so I already have experience with pattern drafting, sewing, etc. But I have a few questions for those of you that use a costumer for your dancing outfits.

    1. Why do you use a costumer instead of buying an off-the-rack costume?
    2. What types of things are you most likely to buy from a costumer?
    3. What is the most important thing you look for in a custom cosume?
    4. What do you expect to pay for a custom costume?

    Thanks!

(Mods, please feel free to move this if it belongs somewhere else.)

I hate having things that other girls wear, and I am really picky. Sometimes this backfires though, because girls will see something I'm wearing and have another costume lady make something similar

    2. What types of things are you most likely to buy from a costumer?
the only things I've bought from the costume lady are gowns, long skirt sets, and thongs that are made really well... like dancer thongs with the butt arch, but the straps are in lace and the crotch area had a little more fabric than the teeny bodyzone ones.
    3. What is the most important thing you look for in a custom cosume?
the fabric is durable and it is sewn really well... if there's any rhinestones, they're on permanently and not falling off
    4. What do you expect to pay for a custom costume?
whatever it is worth- I've paid no more than 120 for a gown, and around 8 for a thong.

    1. Why do you use a costumer instead of buying an off-the-rack costume?
~ I just don't like to look like everyone else in the club - I like to stand out a bit.

    2. What types of things are you most likely to buy from a costumer?
    ~ Gowns, minidresses, feature outfits.

    3. What is the most important thing you look for in a custom cosume?
~ Durability and quality are the two main things. I like originality too but there is a fine line between "unique" and "just plain awful".

    4. What do you expect to pay for a custom costume?
~ Starting around about $45+ for a minidress, $100+ for a long gown and $250+ for a feature outfit.

    1. To get exactly what I want and stand out.
    2. Short, cute dresses
    3. Something that will make me stand out and get a lot of attention.
    4. If it was exactly what I wanted I'd be willing to pay $100+ for a short dress

    1. When I want something specific that I can't find anywhere. I'm picky about costumes too. Or when I have a favorite outfit that's old and falling apart but I still love it; I'll get a costumer to make me a shiny new replica of it.
    2. Besides what I mentioned above...gowns! I hate mass-produced gowns, like what you find in online stripper stores. IMHO they look like frumpy garbage bags and are ugly as sin. But the gowns that the costume lady at my club makes are gorgeous and unique.
    3. Is it my style? Does it fit well? Easy to take on and off? Well-constructed, so it won't fall apart?
    4. Depends on what it is. Usually if I'm buying from a costumer it's a gown, and they're usually 75-80$. If I'm having a costumer make me a new version of one of my favorite worn-out pieces, then hell, I'll pay whatever they want and consider it worth it.

Everything here is exactly what I was going to say!

I also want to add that I like custom costumes because they fit me the way they are supposed to fit, nice and snug.

When I buy custom, I'm usually also buying for higher quality than what I get in the packages. Nothing worse than poor quality (ie. workmanship) dancerwear.
