Thumbs down 2 flat tyres in 3 weeks wtf??

Yes the second punctured tyre in 3 weeks. Im starting to think I have an enemy. It seems highly unlikely to have happened by coincidence. Both times to the front drivers side tyre.
They were both brand new tyres - the whole car is brand new. The annoying thing is that I dont have a spare tyre coz you cant fit one in a mini so it's just got the gel and compressor kit. So the first time it happened I went and bought a new tyre and got that fitted which was $170 and $80 for a new bottle of gel. Then today same fucking thing. So now Im up for the same amount again.
    Im so pissed off.

What punctured the tires? Why did you need to buy a tire after the first puncture?

im not sure. the mechanic said maybe a nail but whatever it was wasn't theere anymore.

needed to change the tyre coz after u fill it with the gel and inflate it with the compressor u can only drive on that tyre for a little while as it will go flat again. plus u cannot drive over 80kph/50mph on the tyre filled with gel.

Did he show you where the puncture was. The only way a tire needs replacing from a puncture (in 99.999% of the time) is if it is punctured within an inch or so of the sidewall, or on the sidewall itself.

But you said 'needed to change the tyre coz after u fill it with the gel and inflate it with the compressor u can only drive on that tyre for a little while as it will go flat again.', the first part is not true. All the gel is designed to do is act as a filler for a hole so you can get it to a shop to have it repaired. The gel won't cause the tire to need replacing. Fix-A-Flat was always a pain in the as to clean out, but it won't ruin your tire.

Do you have run flat tires ? It sounds like you might, from my understanding run flats can not be repaired

When you get a flat, you should always ask for the flat to be fixed. If it is bad and cannot be replaced, they will tell (and should show) you.

no they were just Dunlop tyres. I think the run flat ones were quite expensive from memory.

If someone had punctured my tyre on purpose how long would it take from when they did it for the tyre to go flat? If say someone did it on sunday night and the car was only driven small distances then could it last a couple of days?

Yup, I've been in similar situations. Auto repair shops are such rip-offs. They can overcharge you and do all kinds of things that will cause your car to break on its own within a couple thousand miles. Or they just might not have put the tire back on properly. I dread taking my car in because I've been ripped off so many times. I even had a guy (shop OWNER) that kept breaking my car so I'd have to come back to get it fixed. The last time I got it towed, I just sold it off the street "as is" instead of having it fixed, got a new car and never went back there again.

If I were you I'd start taking my car somewhere else and see if you can get your dad or somebody to go with you. Sorry if it sounds sexist, but its true: A female walking into an auto repair shop alone is like having a big target painted on your forehead.

Where the puncture is, it's size, as well as way the tire is sitting is mainly determining factor. If it is sitting the 'right' way, it could leak out quickly.

If someone intentionally placed a nail, or such, so it would puncture the tire, then yes. But most vandalism is done with immediate tire loss in mind.

If you look at the side, that is the sidewall, if it is punctured there....replacement. However, only a small portion is going to be that. This is common when someone cuts the corner too close and hits the curb. It can puncture the tire.

From the wheel going up the sidewall to the tread, you will hit the side of the tread (changes from sidewall). If it is on that part, 99.99% of the time means replacement. From where the side tread goes to the tread across the tire, only if it is about 1/2 inch or so. But it depends on the person as well as the way the item is located in the tire. I had seen some that were within fixing range, but were pointing at the sidewall and caused sidewall damage.

Also, as an aside, always have a tire fixed by patching, not plugging.

The other item, is that the tire this time, could be leaking because of improper seating, etc.. So, maybe you could take your receipt and say the tire you just put on is leaking.

Something else, even though I haven't done this (tire/ mechanic) for over 20years (it was a high school job/ training), buy a road hazard warranty on new tires. It will pay for the unused portion of the tire if it needs replacing before it goes bad. Kinda like a warranty policy for the tire.

    Yup.

If you think someone at work is flattening your tires, tell the bouncers and staff, park in front all the time and even offer a reward (of some sort) if they catch the person doing it.

Well if it makes you feel better My bf's truck got a flat and then we got it fixed. His tires are covered under warranty and we were joking about setting out nails and making them flat again to get new tires because his are old and the treads are worn. Anyways when we go to get the new tire put on the guy finds two more nails in two of the other tires that WEREN'T there before. He doesn't work in a construction site or anything and we didn't put them there ourselves. So it is possible it was a coincidence.

Usually they can just be patched. Do you have a guy friend you can bring with you when you go?

    Jaizaine

Do you have the tyre number it usually runs like this
225/ 45 R15 or and the brand name. you will find the number on the tyre sidewalls. Maybe worth checking what these sell for and it will give u a good indication if you were ripped off. Usually the best place is to go to a Beaupaires or Bob Janes and you can ask get a quote and ask also them if the specific tyres needs to be replaced if they puncture. Dunlops are usually cheap when compared with Michelins which can be more than twice the price.

I am not a motorhead but most tyre punctures can be fixed.

If its a new car it would be worth checking the warranty. Tyres are rarely covered but there may be a way to at least get it checked by the dealer for free.

To end, (a really dumb question but i will ask). Are you sure its not just a flat tyre. Someone may have the air out as a stupid prank.

    Cheers

    Luke

One time I got my entire beat up stolen car repaired with new radiator, fan, battery and headlight for $400. That's when I realized how much everyone else overcharges me.

Did the tyre go flat after riding for awhile or a short time?

Nah it had a massive hole in the tyre so it wasn't just a flat. I got the bf to go in today for me coz I cant deal with car people. So apparently the tyre is damaged beyond repair coz I kept driving after it was flat - I didn't know because the steering didn't change at all.

The Mini dealer wanted to charge me $250 but I went to Bridgestone and they will do it for $170 again.

I had driven about 15 mins away, went in to a shop and when I drove away I heard the noise a flat tyre makes.

Massive hole = slashed tyre People tend to either let out the air or the really sick ones slash tyres. To punture it or put a nail in is very rare. Sounds like someone slashed your tyre. Park your cark somewhere else.

lol I didn't think about that. Yes, driving on it for any distance after it gets flat will ruin the tire. Basically the wheel will have all it's pressure on the tire itself. However, it should have noticeable damage where the wheel ran over the tire. I saw some where the wheel cut the sidewall off.

    Dealers charge a premium.

I use this stuff in all my tires http://www.slime.com/product_74_Tire_Sealant.html If they don't sell that brand in Aussie I am sure they sell a similar product. It will protect you against nails, screws, etc. In the USA if you are continually getting flats in your right (passanger) tire it means you are driving too close to the edge of the road and picking up debris.
