    Default Valedictorian Speech

Help! My instructor just called me and told me I have finished the program at the top of the class. Not just my class..but all 4 of the nursing classes. They want me to give a speech at the graduation on friday. I do not do well speakin in public. At all. Remember my public speaking class? Horrible terrible panic attack fear. But for some reason..I agreed to do it.
Can I have some reassurance please? And some speech ideas?
I was thinking somethign along the lines of how a new set of caregivers are going to be joining the workforce promoting excellent patient care and touching lives, makign a difference, blah blah? Should I just steal Reece Witherspoons speech in Legally Blonde? Fuck. I dont wanna do this. I cant speak in public.

Congratulations!!! I knew you could do it.

I suggest you make a short speech about how much nursing means to you and how much you look forward to using your new education to help others. That it makes your life and the world a better place.

(Totally keep it short- people hate long speeches. I've sat through WAAY to many overlong overimportant graduation speeches.)

Being a nurse myself, I say really go for the "we are making a difference in people's lives" aspect of nursing. That seems to get 'em every time.

I'm a horrible public speaker, but being on the other end of it, I'll say keep it short. That's the advice I can offer!

    Congrats!

I really wish you the best of luck. Like everyone else said make it short and sweet..and the whole "touching the hearts and minds of thousands of people in a lifetime" type speech. How nursing is such a demanding field, how it's a difficult program and they've all made it. And that is to do one simple thing: Improve the lives of children, adults and seniors alike.
Hell, I'll write the speech for ya if you want. I've got nothing better to do. I wish I had a better idea of you and your program, cause I'd totally rock it. I used to be a public speaker in HS and the few years of College.
    I'm not who I say I am.

What is it about public speaking that makes you nervous?

^ I don't know. I was just never able to speak in public or perform in front of a video camera. Still camera it's no problem, an audience of 1,000 it's no problem as long as I don't have to speak. But I can't stand up and speak to a group of 10. I stutter and get sweaty and shake and heart pounds and it's no good.

and the whole "touching the hearts and minds of thousands of people in a lifetime" type speech. How nursing is such a demanding field, how it's a difficult program and they've all made it. And that is to do one simple thing: Improve the lives of children, adults and seniors alike.
yeah, I'm gunna say something along those lines. Thanks.

    Thanks eveyone!

(I read this somewhere else on SW): When you're standing up there, picture YOURSELF with no clothes on!

Congratulations! What an honor. And don't worry, if you are nervous it's super understandable!

Wish I could offer advice on the public speaking but I have problems with it myself.

    You can do it though!

Congrats, that's an incredible accomplishment! If the course/school/profs have any inside jokes that the majority of the graduating class would understand, or there's a memorable event throughout the program that everyone heard about, that might be neat to throw in your speech. When I graduated high school our valedictorian mentioned this exploding garbage can science demonstration an eccentric science teacher from the school always did, because even if you hadn't experienced it, you heard about it! Just as an example.

HOLY SHIT!!!!! I'm so proud of you!!! Wow! What an accomplishment!!!!

I say DON'T go for the whole 'changing lives blah blah' thing... we've heard it a million times. Talk about why nursing is so exciting right now! You're on the verge of an exploding/expanding field filled with innovation and a demand for increased experience and expertise... as the baby boomer generation gets older and requires more care, the medical field will be increasingly in the spotlight. That means quality personnel, quality care, quality training, and higher expectations. You are ready & willing to meet those head-on.

Talk about someone in nursing who represents a great role model, and why she is leading the way/paving the path for nurses to be innovative/rekindle the flame of true medical professionals instead of hostesses in costume (did i say that?)

    You'll be great.

it's over. I was terrible. The longer I talkd, the more i panicked and stuttered and said "ummm" the sppech was aweful. The pining cerimony kicked ass though. All my classmates pitched in and got me this wonderful bathset ( not Lush. boo) We were in the hospital the other day and the patient had sweet pea body wash and I mentioned how good it smelled..and that is what they bought for me. this huge ass gift set of bath products. They also gave me a card that everyone signed. They even bought my pin for me because I couldn't afford to get a pin for the pinnign cerimony.

I was so shocked and amazed that they did all that for me. Itreally made me feel special and wonderful. I cant thank them enough.
