    Default Candle/soap making

Does anybody make candles or soap? I'm kind of getting interested in it. I looooove candles but spend $5 buying one and I burn it so much that it's obliterated in less than a week.. I figure I could just make them myself for much cheaper. Homemade soap would also be kinda cool just to have Tell me anything and everything you know!!

I make vegan soaps. Melt and pour are the easiest to start with and you can find kits that have the soap base, molds, color and scents pretty cheap on Ebay and sometimes at local craft stores. If you are interested in the seller I buy from on Ebay drop me a pm and I'll be happy to fwd their store link.

I would love to! I've been talking about taking up the craft for the past 2yrs but never actually buy the products. I own books, and read them religiously..but never buy the materials.

I make Tyler Durden brand soap. I make you some? It's EXTRA creamy made from all natural stuff.

My maternal grandmother made soap because well, she lived in rural mountainous Mexico & there wasn't going to be ANY soap to use unless she made some.

Luckily, you can probably get a hold of vegetable-based ingredients to use, instead of wood ash lye and beef tallow like Grandma's soap... ; P

I'd Google some Amish/Mennonite-related literature- I know they don't want to share their soap & candle-making secrets but I'm sure someone has blabbed. There was a group of them in my town in Montana & we bought a lot of things from their store, some home-made.

I used to. It got boring quickly unless I made charm candles.. then it sucked because I knew what was in it!

I would love to use some TM soap

I get impatient waiting for stuff to come in the mail so I guess I'll be hitting up the craft stores this weekend!

CK, let's both go soon and get candle and soap making stuff and start together! I have no clue what I'm doing so maybe we can help each other out and trade newbie candles haha

Making candles was fun for me until I mastered it and then it isn't as exciting. However the great thing is you can make a huge batch at one time. You buy the bulk wax and buy the thickest wick you can to accomodate large multiday burning candles. Melt the wax in a double boiler being VERY careful not to let the water evaporate from the baottom pan. To each batch you add the scent you like, it can be store bought or it can me homemade. Once the wax is melted and mixed you prepare your molds. Your molds should be made out of a material that can withstand the high temperature of the wax. You prepare your wicks by dipping them into the wax then drying then re-dipping a few times. Take a stick or pencil and wrap the top of the wick around it letting the bottom part extend into the mold until it touches the bottom. Pour in your scented wax and let stand. You can pour a few large candles or a whooooole lot of small ones.

That's pretty much the gist of it. Do your reseach and pratice a few times to get it right and you'll have a safe little factory!!

Why Tyler Durder soap? re we not supposed to talk about it??LOL Now I'm curious...I want some!

I'd love to make my own candles!! I LOVE scented candles and I go through them so fast..esp in summer when its wet but sweltering outside all the time so it smells musty inside without them.

What about Soy or Beeswax candles? I heard they burn longer...can you make them scented or different colors? How long do they last? Are they harder to make??

It would be more cost efficient to make them myself, right? I burn them literally alllllll day. I'm sure there probably isn't a huge market for them but it would be kinda cool to sell them if I was ever good at it someday.

^ i don't know L&L. my bath bombs cost more than lush's. the oil is where it gets you... for high fragrance it's gonna be a bit pricey. my oil i get from GNC/Basic Foods is anywhere from $5-$25. i never will spend more than that.

Have you thought about buying from a site that sells in bulk? Might be a bit cheaper.

    Iz made frum hoomun fatz

Sadly, the non-joking non-fight club reference is that I read that Nazis made soap from the Jews during the Holocaust because they threw them into boiling water.

According to this recipe you can use other fats such as pig fat.

Duh. I've seen Fight Club and I still thought Tyler Durden was like a designer or something like Todd Oldham or Isaac Mizrahi.

I guess I'll look into buying bulk fragrance though. If anybody finds some bulk that's way more than they're going to use and wants to go in together on it let me know! I prefer clean smelling scents like clean linen and stuff like that, but I'm not too picky. Food scents make me hungry so those kind of suck though.

Sweet, thanks! I actually don't know anything about it so I'll spend the next month or so reading up on it and whenever we're ready we can go buy the stuff and help each other out. If we went now, I'd be absolutely no help to you since I don't know anything. I'm excited!
