    Default pole help

I got a pole in my apartment and I'm a super noob at any pole tricks. At first my arms KILLED but I've been practicing simple spins several times daily and I'm working my strength up.

My problem is with my hands. They often slip on the pole and I have to wipe them on a clothe for them to not slide down the pole at lightning speed. I clean my pole about once a day with a baby wipe.

Also, my fingers are swollen and hurt a lot. I can't even fit my regular rings on them anymore. What is up with that??

Should I cut down on my practice until my body adjusts?

You could also try a product called Mighty Grip. Its a powdery substance that makes the hands tacky and will give you a better grip on the pole.

I had that problem as well. Stainless is also the most slippery type of pole you can get. I haven't tried the mighty grip personally but I've heard great things about it. I've got a powder coated pole which has the most grip and when I first started out I'd spray a bit of hairspray on my hands as a quick fix and it worked pretty well!

Chalk balls from Mountaineering shops work really well.

I wipe my stainless down with windex regularly while practicing, and wipe off my hands regularly too. This kept the "grip" strong enough until my muscles of my hands and arms were strong enough to work on their own.

When I very first started, I wore rubber gloves! (at home, not ITC!!!) You can't spin in them at all, but it will help you climb.

stainless is sooooooooo slippery. it's just going to take time for your grip and arms to get strong. Invest in some arnica gel or cream for swelling and bruises, and pulled muscles. If you get any pole burns, use calendula gel (or cream). both of those work like a charm.

Windex will mess up the stainless over time. Try rubbing alcohol of a hand towel instead. I also sometimes use a grip product called Dry Hands. It's best not to depend on grip stuff but for learning new tricks it can be a nice safety aid.

The swollen hands may be from gripping the pole too hard. When I first started pole dancing I used to grip the pole so hard I would get blisters...LOL. Eventually your hands will get used to it and you'll learn the right amount of grip pressure. I have a stainless pole in my house and I clean is with a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol to keep it clean.

Mine is fine after two years, aside from a couple scratches from my boots and whatnot. I use window cleaner because the Lil' Mynx website said alcohol is too strong to use and window cleaner is good. We use rubbing alcohol in the club on the brass, though, from a spray bottle, with a rag.

I was always told the opposite. Windex will eat the clear coat or something?

I dont use Lil' Mynx products but I strongly disagree. Maybe you have a powder coated pole and thats why they suggested it.

Anyway, window cleaner will leave a residue. I use window cleaner as a last resort if I run out of alcohol.

Gymnastic chalk or rosin bags will help your hands. They are designed to absorb sweat so they make your hands a little tacky. The dry hands and mighty grip products are great for learning. If you are just working on spins, you will have a very difficult time unless you are on a spinning pole. When you use these products, be prepared to REALLY stick to the pole. A student of mine ripped her skin off because she used it on her thighs for an inverted move and stuck to the pole! LOL, I don't think that would happen to you, but just wanted to give you the heads up.

I am going to call Lil Mynx to see what I should clean it with. Thanks for the advice. I think it will get better over time as my fingers and arms strengthen.

LOL, sorry that happened to you! I have never touched the stuff because I am a performer and I don't like relying on those things in practice and then not have it in performance.

Build up the muscles in your forearm to increase your grip, try not to strain with your fingers and use tension and support in your forearm. Its also really important to develop your triceps and bicepts equally so make sure you stretch everything out after each session.

I do gymnastics and going onto the pole was quite easy for me BUT the hand pain did come back quickly. Spoke to my physio who said to try a powerball and grip strengtheners so i'm not taking too much strain in the wrong places.

If you do get rips, there is a wonderful balm called ClimbOn, http://www.climbonproducts.com/ and it's brilliant for repairing cuts/calluses etc. When I did gym full time I used to razor my callouses off my hands but luckily pole has never got that gruesome... mainly because i really dislike it and try not to do much!

Wish I had the patience to get futher with the pole but I just feel like an idiot on it, get shy practicing in front of others and then fall off cos i think somethings easier than it is lol!

Hmm, nope, it's stainless, and still feels/looks the way it did the day I bought it. I don't spray right on the pole, though; I spray onto a paper towel and then wipe the pole down with that and then buff it with a clean towel, so maybe it's because I am only using a really small amount each time.

Oooh what is it? Will it give me Bobbis legs also?

I personaly used to use chalk on my hands for dryness and rosin on my legs for tack.
Now its chalk still but Gorilla Grip for tack.

PLEASE...NEVER...EVER use Windex on poles...would you spray it directly on your body?

Probably not, so why would you use it on the pole that your body is in direct contact with??

Windex contains Ammonia A, which is one of the compounds used to remove paint. It says it is "safe" on stainless, which means it will not discolor the metal immediatly...but WILL over a period of time.

Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol 70% USP or Higher is used to steralize and completely degrease the pole for cleaning. DO NOT mix with water, that is defeating the purpose of the dry factor of the alcohol.

The swelling in your hands is caused by the gripping, it will subside, ice it to reduce it faster. I have had days after classes that I cant close my hands...so I use cold packs on busy days.

As far as it goes for grip aids...you cant use them in the club (some glow) so why get used to using them? The strength will come, be patient!

Personally, I have never used grip aids, and I do not approve of them in my classes either, if you cant do a move with out aid...then you are not able to do it!

    i agree with alena

windex is horrible to use on a pole. i know many girls that have broken out in rashes because of it.

yes, you can use rubbing alcohol on powder coated poles, it doesn't hurt them.

    plus windex is stinky! lol
