    Default Kosher Foods

Hey... noticed there's a few more Jews on board now.

I'm finding it difficult to discover what foods are kosher and what aren't, so I thought maybe we could start compiling a list of some surprisingly kosher foods. In Australia, most products don't have a label deeming them kosher and some ARE. Other times I go to import stores and there's the same exact version of a food from America saying it's kosher and the same stuff here just different packaging has no little label! I tend to play it safe instead of sorry but..

I was SO happy to find out those 8-bunch packages of somen and soba noodles were marked kosher!!

Any other items that you love that are kosher?

(Please... I'm so tired of eating prepackaged foods...)

This also depends on your point of view.... I was raised sorta-Orthodoxish (long story, don't even get me started) and there are only a few Kosher symbols Orthodox Jews are supposed to accept as truly Kosher. All others could be just slapped on the package to sell more product, supposedly.

Yes, I'm also a "Good Jewish Woman".... stripper. Hah.

I'm slowly progressing Orthodox. I don't mean foods made by a Jew... but more foods where meat processors never touched dairy processors.

So many foods could have the label and don't! Like I'm pretty sure Keebler doesn't make meat cookies.

A jewish and muslim way of eating.

You can't combine meat and dairy and must wait 3 hours before eating dairy if you consumed meat. You cannot have some fish, all shellfish and most gelatins. On some holidays you can't have certain foods...etc. Your meat plates must be seperate from your dairy plates unless you wash them in a dishwasher or they're made of glass... and your grapes have to be Rabbi approved.

LOL Lysondra... I understand what you mean, but for Orthdox Jews, Kosher doesn't just mean no meat and dairy mixing. It means a Rabbi watched the process from start to finish and certified that this was the case. Officially.

Plus, Keebler cookies could have pig fat in them. Who knows? I haven't read the labels recently.

Something is kosher when it adheres to Jewish dietary guidelines.

The hechsher, or stamp of approval, is a long process more difficult that it seems. My restaurant was trying to get OU certification and wow. It's jumping through as many hoops as opening a strip club.

No I know... my version doesn't involve Rabbi supervision.. just seperation. One step at a time for me.

There is no official reason in our books other than ' because it's holy'.

There are MANY MANY unofficial reasons though.

Really? Because it always surprised me the Vegan restaurant near here wasn't kosher. It's freaking VEGAN! They don't have meat, gelatin or dairy!! Shove a Rabbi in there for a day to check it over and it's kosher, I thought!

I really like being kosher. It teaches me SO MUCH. I have learned patience and self-control most of all. Plus I'm super careful of each thing I eat because I am forced to think about it and all it's ingredients and if it'll effect a meal I plan to have later. (Like I won't eat steak if I know my friends and I are going out for icecream in an hour)....

and because I have forced myself to wait for things like food.. I found I am waiting for a lot more things. I am more patient and easy-going..

really... being kosher teaches you so many things. It's been an enlightening experience for me.

It isn't really a Rabbi that supervises, but someone that is trained and approved of by the Rabbi. (Called a mashgiach.)

Total supervision includes a full time mashgiach and thorough checks of everything and anything that comes onto the property. All ingredients MUST have a hechsher to be allowed in the building. \
Most places don't want to pay an extra salary because the Kosher market is quickly dwindling down and don't make up for the extra $50,000 for the mashgiach.

Many Orthodox travel guidebooks actually warn travelers from being lured by vegan restaurants because they don't fully inspect their produce for insects - another must for Orthodox supervision.

*sigh* With these regulations, it's not surprising there can't be any kosher food in Australia. There's only ONE RABBI in my ENTIRE city. ONE. The hechsher isn't on most foods even if they could be deemed kosher... my location makes this so hard.

I want to be a good Jew...I really do. But I'd be stuck eating $60 chicken breasts that I cooked myself in a glass pan with only salt and pickles if that were the case.

Lol, just because pickles are kosher style doesn't mean they are kosher!

I can't imagine how challenging it must be for someone to grow up and then come into all of these rules. It is so different when you're stuck with them as a kid!!

But really, it isn't about labels. It's just like you said - a better awareness of what goes into your body.

You grow up in a Kosher butcher shop, ya learn a few things. Some things you'd rather forget (ack butchery) and others stick with you forever.

    That explains it.

Actually my fiance's best friend's uncle (LOL.. yes, really) owns a dairy farm here in town. I've helped milk cows, bottle-feed calves... and have seen a cow-carcass hanging in the barn to drain. Didn't phase me.

Oh yah. and then some time passed and we ate (insert cow's name here) for dinner one night when I was there. They froze the rest of her. She was TASTY!!!

Very VERY fresh cow meat good. Almost as good as very VERY fresh raw milk.

    ERM.. but not together.. LOL

No my pickles have a little label on them.

I don't eat 100% kosher. I can't go to restaurants EVER otherwise. I just feel better eating 100% kosher.

Which has me stuck currently eating really disgusting chocolates off a paper plate with $8 a gallon milk and pickles.

Oh.. and I love Hebrew National hot dogs. 100% beef. Sometimes eating non-kosher hot dogs makes me gag if I think about it. So I haven't lately.

And not only am I not supposed to eat ham, but I don't like it. Unless you count bacon.

    Crispy bacon. Nomnomnomnomnom. Oops.
