Default Trying to go Vegan, constipated/gassy/bloaty

I've pretty much gone cold turkey.

It's been over a week now since I have mostly been eating wheat toast, plenty of fruits, a couple veggies, beans and a pbj, as well as cookies/cheetos, still eating junk too!....so I figure Im getting what I need fiber wise but it started 2 days ago this really painful, gassy, bloated belly. Then I try to poop and Im like constipated but can easily poop in the morning?...any advise? Any idea of whats going on? Im normal "regular" too... Im starting to second guess this diet. Thanks.

You're not getting enough protein, calcium or b-12. That could be it. It could also be the junk food, which you should stop eating so you can replace it with healthy things. Vegan is a lifestyle that requires commitment and some level of discipline. You CANNOT just get by on cookies, toast and "a couple veggies"! It's not the diet that's causing problems, it's all the junk and being uneducated about what to eat.

You should pick up a copy of this book -

And in the meantime read this -

Also are you drinking enough water? Dehydration is usually the culprit in constipation...in a lot of things actually.

I felt like shit for the first 2-3 weeks of my cold-turkey vegan diet. You need to better plan and research your diet to be successful. I've been vegan for 8 years now.

Cut out the crap and the toast. Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies and maybe some prunes to get that colon moving. It might be something else or a combination of things but it could just be that the poo is fermenting thus producing gas because its stuck inside you and you may be fine after cutting out the junk.

Probiotics are probably a good idea too (-:

I feel a million times better. I was 15 when I went vegan and 23 now. I have way more energy, my skin cleared up, better immune system, ect. But ya, the first 2-e weeks were hell. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't do cold turkey.

Once you're vegan for awhile, you'll feel sick when you DON'T eat vegan.

I can't help with the gas part. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

I keep regular with oatmeal (with blueberries, flaxseed, and soymilk) in the morning. I call it colon blast. B12 is usually found in soymilk, but you can get it in nutritional yeast too. And semen. (ick!)

    here's a link about B12 for vegans:
    http://www.veganhealth.org/b12/vegansources

Don't give up on it because of the gas. I mean, I'm assuming you're doing it because you care about animals and don't want to support an industry that profits off their abuse and exploitation.

But there are other reasons too. It is better for your health (as long as you get a balanced diet, of course) and factory farming is horrible for the environment, so there's an added bonus! You are contributing to something good for yourself, animals and the environment. it's worth it! Stick with it!

You can also get B12 from fresh, (preferably organic) leafy green vegetables. Definitely use nutritional yeast in sauces, or sprinkled on things like pizza or pasta. It tastes sort of like cheese.
It's not good to eat soy constantly. Take a multivitamin or B12 supplement.
Do some research about this before you go full force being vegan. It takes a lot of getting used to.
I have been vegan at two points in my life but right now I can't because I need more calories and protein and don't have enough time to eat that much. Being vegan actually saps my energy, but that might not be the case when I'm done breastfeeding.

Not everyone can drink soy milk. I can't, it gives me similar problems (gassy, constipated) as well as issues with mood swings (probably from the phyto-estrogens).

You do know that cookies are made with dairy and eggs, right? Unless you are buying specific vegan cookies, most are not vegan. Refined sugar is also not considered vegan because of the ground bone that is used in the refining process. Some microscopic bits of bone remains in white sugar, ergo not vegan.

I recommend cutting out the soy milk and switching to hemp milk instead. Avoid any processed grain products (bread, crackers, boxed cereal) and try eating things like brown rice, old fashioned oatmeal, potatoes, couscous and other wholesome grain and vegetables.

Replace sugar with agave nectar. 100% vegan and tastes just like sugar (it has calories like sugar, and a consistency of honey).

I hope you feel better soon. It is tough to go vegan. I've tried many times, but didn't have any success. Good luck!

Only about a quarter of sugar produced for consumption in the US is still made with bone char. Especially for someone who is just starting out, I wouldn't even think about things like this. If you approach veganism as a purist a) you're missing the point and b) you'll go crazy. Whether you're doing it for your health, the health of the planet, or to minimize suffering, it's not about being personally pure, but about making the best decisions you can when it comes time to eat.

For the record, I've been vegan for 7 years and have never had any problems with it. I went vegan "cold turkey", too. It's a testament to the power of marketing and lobbying by the meat and dairy industries that people believe you have to take special "precautions" to eat a plant-based diet. The fact is MOST people are not getting all the nutrients they needs from food, regarless of whether or not they eat animal products.

I second the suggeston of water. Oh, check this out:

Yes! I tried veganism, and trying to be all psychotic about it will just make you quit. Eat a balanced diet, and make sure you get some protein everyday.

And Hell no cheetos are NOT vegan! They do make vegan "cheetos" though, and they are quite good. Oreos are vegan however

I've been a vegan for years, and I just have succombed to dealing with gas. I would MUCH rather be healthy and somewhat gassy than eat crap just to avoid it. IMO, the trade off isn't a better option.

For many people, their bodies eventually get used to it and adapt to it. Be VERY careful *NOT* to carb yourself out. Many vegans/vegetarians eat way too many carbs, when the emphasis should be on fruits, vegetables, beans, and healthy fats.

    ^^^ Ditto.

Sidenote: I was vegan for over a decade. Now I'm not and I'm healthier and more energetic. I used to think being vegan was the healthiest way to go. It ain't really BUT if that's your choice you have to be more dilliegent about the kinds of foods you eat so you don't screw with your glands affecting you hormone, energy and blood sugar. It's really easy to get overly carby on vegan diets. And unless you're eating eating all organic and mostly fresh vegetables, beans, tempeh, miso, nuts and fruits -- it won't be healthy and it'll be easier to end up with things like candida/yeast in your system.

Cheetos? I never ate cheetos when I was vegan. Do your research girl!

^^With more than 66% of Americans overweight and cancer, heart diease, and stroke being the most common causes of death, I still think that the average vegan eats better than the average American.

For anyone who thinks a vegan diet is "extreme", check out a triple bypass surgery sometime. *That's* extreme.

I have one kid that's a veggie and the other that's a vegan. I myself am the biggest unhealthy eater hands down. But for them, I've had to research...buy books and cookbooks to learn about what is healthiest for them to eat as well as keeping their bones, teeth etc strong.

I second what someone said about carb loading. I can't tell you how many vegans I personally know that eat a shit ton of carbs.

My youngest who is vegan has bowel issues as well. Vegan farts=the worst. But I give him papaya chewables and he drinks a LOT of water. It helps him go to the bathroom.

Here are a few few cook books that I enjoy

Uh, I didn't say it was extreme. And it's not that meat is what"s making Americans fat, sick, bloated and full of inflammation.

I agree. It makes me laugh sometimes (not anyone here!) when I see unhealthy people stuffing themselves with utter crap paying out on vegans and suggesting the lifestyle isnt healthy. Too many people dont even know what healthy is anymore.
However unhealthy vegans piss me off somewhat too. 20+ years ago overweight vegans were unheard of - now its not so uncommon for instance. To end up with life threatening health problems that require animal tested enviromentally unfriendly treatment is a bit short sighted IMO. Although Im not a long term vegan and for the last decade or so until quite recently wasnt even a vegetarian (prior to that I was for 13 years) I feel really sad to have seen vegetarian and vegan diets slide from being wholefood and healthy to processed and pre packaged.

Back to the OP - in addition to adding probiotics to the diet you could try adding enzymes - available from health food stores or chemists in the vitamin section.
