Default working in oz, visa questions :)

hi, thinking about coming to oz early next year. setting off from brisbane and then hopefully travelling down the coast, hitting sydney and onto melbourne.

i want to know (although it might vary state to state?) if i need a working visa to be permitted to work in the clubs?
i know if i get a year's working visa then i'll be provided with a tax code and stuff, but are things always done 'through the books'?

    thanks in advance

oh, i'm from the uk, if that matters any

Yes, they are always done on the books except for ONE club I've ever been to. You'll need a working visa and an ABN. Immigration busts are fairly common; I wouldn't risk it even if you find a shady club.

    thanks for the speedy reply!

i'm thinking of getting a 3 month holiday visa first then a year's working visa when that runs out but maybe not now.... hmm.

this is a little off topic but are things generally done the proper way with all jobs? even the rubbish traveller ones? if so i may be better off just getting my working visa to start off with.

I would really not try to avoid the system in Australia. Even if you manage to get a decent paying job, there are massive stings and busts for that type of thing.

I worked 3 days in Sydney and was handcuffed for a whole minute for having an accent before I told them I was on a working visa, they saw it and let me go. No effing joke...

    Put it this way..

Immigration busts even have their own TV show.

It's a great country. You can couchsurf at my place. Knock on my door three times and say 'stripperweb'.

Probably some of the backpacker / traveler forums are a better place to ask.

Its probably wise to get the working visa if you want to stay for a long period of time - and to make sure you have enough $ in the bank to survive on for the minimum period you want to stay. Thousands and thousands of backpackers are over here working whilst having a holiday so its not like theres a void in the job market

It's funny I spent most of 1995 in Australia on business and it struck me that it's not at all like the " ocker" image and is really quite PC. Smoking was already banned almost everywhere, drink driving rules were very strict, crossing the road in the wrong place could lead to a fine, most Aussies were so frightened of skin cancer that they were no browner than the English etc etc.

The only exception to this was in Darwin where everybody drinks like a fish, laws are ignored, the well dressed wear tatty shorts and flip flops, everybody is as brown as a berry etc.

If you do go visit Darwin as it's the only part of Australia I found that actually looks like a Castlemain advert !

ahahahaha thanks tyke, that's defiitely a good tip. i know so little about australia, the castlemain thing is my mental picture totally. it's good to know it's not all like that i guess though!

    so excited to go now.

ms qwerty, i've been googling traveller forums but there's so many. do you have any favourites?

    thanks genie

also, not sure if anyone here can help me, but to extend my visa i think i have to have 3 months of being employed with one employer. would a strip club count?

^ As a stripper you are self-employed so you technically work for yourself.

yeah i thought that might be the case. what about the contracts that i hear mentioned on here? if i were to do 3 months working on contacts for a certain agency then i wonder if that would count (or is even possible)

i guess the otherpotion is to get a part time job behind a bar or something like that for 3 months and strip as well as that. hmmm.

No you're not working for that agency. They're an agent. You still work for yourself.

ok thanks for the info again

i guess i'll have to suck it up and have a normal job for a while. that's even scarier than leaving my own country and staying in another i've never experienced for a year!

But if you are your own employer than technically aren't you working for an employer for 3 months? It just happens to be yourself..

It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, honestly.

    It's also the most worthwhile.

Three years now and I still don't have it. Four immigration scares, $20,000, many nights of tears, many days of rushing around getting paperwork done.. all worth it.

    Try this link
    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/work.../462/index.htm

If you have problems with the link you can visit the Department of Immigation and Citizenship website and search for a 462 Visa. The site has all the forms costs etc.

    Hi!

Just to add to anyone thinking of avoiding the australian visa just don't! My friend was in sydney for two years legally then due to illness didn't sort her most recent visa. Like an idiot she nipped to NZ to see family and was detained on her way back.

Kept in a detention centre for four days, no phonecalls - her guy was going crazy - then escorted in hand cuffs onto a plane and they didn't uncuff her until dubai..

She is back in the UK now and can't work she's been so shaken up by what happened. Foolish thing to do and I really hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. Take care
