Default Feeding fruit to my dog?

I thought I'd ask here because I've noticed there's a lot of people who knwo a lot about dogs on this forum.

Is it a good idea to feed fruit to my dog? I have a small puppy, 6 months old. She loves fruit- cherries, melon, apples, etc. She's only had a small taste of these. I know on a raw food diet people feed their dogs types of fruits, which ones will actually benefit her?

I have a list of foods that are toxic to dogs, so I don't feed her grapes obviously. I'm just wondering what kinds of fruits might be good for her.

"Fruit is very good for dogs" is what my vet said. I give my dogs apples all the time they love them.

yeah my dog gets all the cores too, so no her ears perk up at the first crunch of an apple.

BellonaI just read Alicia Silverstones dogs are vegetarian.
How is that even possible? Don't dogs need meat protein

Dogs are omnivores. so as long as they get protein, it doesn't matter what kind it is,

I read some time ago that wild dogs - ie foxes, wolves etc all eat quite a high percentage of fruits and vegetation in the wild. Im sure Ive seen more info online. Im not a pet person so sorry no links.

I think the vegan dog thing is crap of people to do though.

As a snack I think it's fine. My mutt loves a few peas off my plate, or a baby carrot here and there.

My dog LOVES fruits and vegetables. Especially bananas.

We never knew dogs ate them until our vet suggested it with our other dogs a few years ago.

My current waits for her daily banana. One day I ran out, and she sat by her fruit bowl and whined for the longest time.

If you say the word "banana", she runs next to her food bowl and stares at you.

She also enjoys carrots and apple slices.

I've never had any problem with diahrreah or anything, but I suppose that would depend on the dog,

I dont think its bad if dogs and cats eat some fruit or veggies, if there were in the wild they would eat whatever they want. But honestly there bodies are meant to digest meat.

actually pineapple and tomatos aren't good for them-- little bits won't hurt them too much, but it's kind of a risk. They just don't digest the first well (or at all) and then the second one leeches something out of their body... too acidic. don't remember the details.

Small bits of avocado are also okay (moreso for big dogs than little dogs because they tend to be able to handle more that might kill a small dog.) Just don't feed the skin or the pits to them.

Anything with pits: cherries, peaches, nectarines are bad because of the pit. I don't think you're even supposed to feed them the fruit of that but as with everything-- do your own research. Also watch out about feeding dogs apples because they will get the cyanide from the seeds. Once again, probably not a big deal for the occasional treat for a big dog, but for a small dog this could mean big trouble.

I feed mine veggies and fruits-- he gets watermelon, blueberries, strawberries, oranges, bananas, occasional small bits of avocado. As far as veggies go, he gets canned veggies: green beans, beets, carrots, and peas. He gets fresh celery from time to time. I need to feed him more fresh veggies but I just haven't gotten around to it.

As far as protein and fat goes-- he gets beef marrow bones, chicken backs, chicken wings (perfect proportion of fat, protein and marrow bones), eggs (whole with shell), coconut oil, and occasional dog treats that WF makes up that's all sorts of meat put together.

you'll also find that your dog will hate some stuff and love others while another dog is just the opposite. It's part of the fun of feeding your dog raw, or from the bones and raw food diet, or from even the cooked diet (which some do); you get to know your dog's personality a little bit more by learning their likes and dislikes.

cats are carnivores; dogs are omnivores. Dogs can survive and thrive on a vegan or vegetarian diet (some get stuff like yogurt or cottage cheese.) Cats NEED meat. Their health will be severely compromised without it, as far as I've read. Dogs-- not so.

fyi: dogs can get poisoned by grapes. even a handful. even if you've fed them to him/her before. I pulled this article up on google, but one source talked about a golden retreiver being poisoned on a few grapes (five or less.) So-- just be aware that even relatively good sized dogs (though you might have a mastiff or a dane or a roman which are tons bigger) can be killed from this practice.

as far as pistachios go-- again, watch out. I know my dog couldn't process almonds even though he LOOOOOOVED them. absolutely freaking loved them. as far as pistachios go, here is an article that says that pistachios are toxic to your dog:

I know it's tough when you find something your dog loves but if it's bad for them you really have to not feed them it. There's enough great non-harmful stuff out there that your dog will love and won't be a risk.

don't get me wrong-- I've fed my dog stuff and then found out later on what a risk I was taking-- but you really have to do your research before feeding them. It's not even that hard-- just google.

I just quickly googled cherries for dogs and so far it seems that it's just the pit that's dangerous.

there's some really awesome pet forums on the net and even specialized b.a.r.f. (bones and raw food) or just alternative diet forums out there.

I know curezone.com has a pets and animals forum that covers a wide range of topics, alternative diet included.

Dogs are obligate carnivores. Which means they will eat anything, meat or non meat, dead or alive to survive; but if given a choice WILL choose meat over veggies.

I can't fathom why anyone would force their dietary beliefs on an animal, it's ignorant, IMO.

Grapes and raisens are lethal to dogs. I'm sure in tiny doses it's OK, as my dog has gotten a hold of a grape or two, but I wouldn't recommend it.
The pits of fruits are lethal also. They contain arsenic (or some other poison..give me a break it's 5 am and I just got UP). We don't get sick because we know not to eat the pits....however some animals don't know not to eat them. They'd probably be fine in moderation and pitted.
Otherwise have fun. And take it slow. Depending on your dogs intestinal tract it could be a bigggg mess.
    I'm not who I say I am.

true-- but IMO vegan/vegetarian is better than 90% of the dog food out there.

^^^ amen to that, do you even know what kind of SHIT they put in dog food? Literally SHIT. Like SHIT SHIT. I seriously cannot imagine feeding anything worse to a dog than dog food! .... well except for chocolate

I feel bad cause I still give my girlie dog food anyways, but I always let her much on my apple cores and she DIGS them so much! she's so cute! She's a really pretty pitt bull I love her.
